How crazy do you think Bradbury's society in Fahrenheit 451 is? The major similarity I see is the presence of censorship. In Fahrenheit 451, the government ordered all books to be burned. Captain Beatty says that," a book is a loaded gun in the house next door. I think the government does this to obtain and retain control over the society to prevent uproar and the possibility of being overthrown. In our society, the government is censoring movies, music, magazines, television, and freedom on our own computers. Groups like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) are devoting their time to censor everything that they deem to be inappropriate, just like the firemen ruined the books. Don't let anything be anti-government because they will try their hardest to make sure that item is banned.

Along with censorship, I think the government in Fahrenheit 451 and our government have major power and control issues. Both governments try to find control by means of censorship. They also outlaw certain actions that most people think shouldn't be outlawed. For example when Clarisse says, "Oh, just my mother and father and uncle sitting around, talking. It's like being a pedestrian, only rarer. My uncle was arrested another timedid I tell you? --forbeing a pedestrian. Oh we're most peculiar (Pg.10)."She is talking about how they are odd for doing these things, like spending time with your family, being along, and walking. The government has made it so you are punished for doing these things. In our society, protests, sharing music online, and freedom of speech, in some cases, are punishable. Eventually, the more power and control the government gets, the more our society will turn into Bradbury's society.

Another similarity is how in the book, families spent more time entertaining themselves seperately than spending time talking together. In the book, Montag says that "I can't talk to my wife; she listens to the walls (Pg. 8). That shows how families didn't spend any time together. Entertainment is more important than finding out about your family. The same thing is going on in our society. Everyone is too busy to stay home, they have their own priorities. It's more convenient to leave your kids at home in front of the TV instead of reading them a story. The more time you have away from your home gives you more exposure to be tempted to do things that could be detrimental to your family life. Something else that goes along with this topic is how people care more about their jobs and getting paid than for the well-being of the others whom your actions could affect. Montag tells about how "we burnt an old woman with her books (Pg. 4)." The firemen didn't think about the possible consequences of their actions nor did they care. They just wanted to do their job and get paid no matter who would get hurt or killed in the process. These days people are robbing banks or scamming people out of money just to profit themselves. They don't care about anyone else but themselves and the money they can earn.

Clarisse expresses that "they all say the same thing and nobody says anything different from anybody else (Pg.1)." No one seems to want to learn things and form their own opinion. Which leads me to my last point.

Ignorance is bliss. Both societies tend to think that the less they know, the happier they are. I've talked to many of my friends about wrongdoings in the government or about certain mysteries of other countries and what most of them tell me is that they don't really care about all of that unless it directly affects them. I've also had some people tell me that it makes them sad to hear about those things so they don't bother learning about them. I found that very similar to the people who live in Montag's society. Two quotes stood out to me. The first was when Beatty says, "Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it.Any man who can take a TV wall apart and put it back together again is happier than any man who tries toslide-rule, measure, and equate the universe (Pg. 61)."The second was when Mrs. Bowles scolded Montag for reading Dover Beach and making Mrs. Phelps cry. She says, " I've always said poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and sickness all that mush (Pg. 101)!" They are both saying that knowledge only brings pain and that being ignorant brings happiness, just like many of us today.
