I'm so excited I shouted down the phone to my friend I couldn't believe all these months of waiting were over I was finally going on holiday to Florida. My mum and dad always book holiday's months in advance so I'm usually counting down the days. I'd already packed my bags and everything was ready this year my whole family were coming too. My clothes were already set out so I just jumped into the shower and brushed my teeth I was the last to get ready as always but I still had to wait for the taxi.

The taxi arrived and we all pilled in, the ride to the airport was boring we drove passed fields and motorways until we got to the airport. There were queues of people waiting to check in so I just wandered round looking at the many desks and hundreds of people queuing up. My mum called me and it was time to go to duty free I bought some perfume and magazines for the plane but I had at least another hour to wait until we boarded I had a meal and a drink. I was hungry and couldn't wait for the on flight meal the trolley was coming up behind me and hit me in the arm the flight attendant apologised and gave me my meal, I only picked at it and ate the potatoes and veg but the chicken looked off. The film on the plane was very boring and I fell asleep half way through.

"Kate Kate" I could hear a voice and someone was shacking me my mum had woken me up as we were about to land. The plane hit the tarmac and its tyres screeched as we stopped it was O.K to get off and as we stepped off the air-conditioned plane the heat hit me it was so hot, Id never expected it to be like this, we picked our bags up and then it was time to drive to the villa.

When we pulled up to the villa I was more excited than ever it looked huge, my mum opened the door and I ran in. I couldn't believe how nice it was the living room was huge with a giant TV and L shaped sofa the kitchen was in the same room and the refrigerator was enormous the whole house was decorated in gold and ivory I wanted to stay there for ever. My bedroom was great the bed was really comfy and I had my own walk in wardrobe as soon as I could I hung all of my clothes up and put my shoes on the rack. My mum had the best room it was giant and had its own on-suite bathroom when I walked outside into the heat I was so happy to see my own swimming pool it was great. One of the best places I went to was definitely Sea World as soon as you walked in there you were surrounded by the most amazing things there was dolphin, seal, whale and even polar bear exhibits. The first thing I went to was the Shamu Show it warned you that you may get wet but I didn't realise how wet the first splashes were only small but the second covered 1 rows of the arena. The dolphins were next and you were aloud to feed them! It was great they were so playful and all queued up to have a piece of fish. There were two rides at Sea World and both had huge drops they were really scary and got you totally drenched, at the end of the trip to sea world we visited the Ice Age exhibit inside the exhibit it was really cold and as you walked in there was a huge polar bear in an exhibit at first I thought it was a statue until it moved and I realised it was real. There were also other arctic animals like a giant walrus that had teeth like elephants tusks and an arctic whale that was as big as a lorry I couldn't believe what kind of animals they had in Sea world but I felt bad that they were enclosed and would never be free. Another place I really enjoyed was Disney land as soon as I walked in I noticed the enormous Cinderella castle right in the centre as I walked in I noticed the amazing shops selling princess crowns and dresses, I really liked the miniature houses that characters like Minnie mouse and Donald duck lived in it was a shame I was to big to fit in them. I took loads of photos of the parade which I really liked it was nice to see Minnie and Mickey walking down the road and to see Cinderella and Snow White riding on there floats. I really liked the shops as well; they had a whole shop that only sold Christmas gifts our decorations for your Christmas tree, the Disney shop was my favourite I loved to look at all of the cuddly toys that were pilled up like a toy pyramid I bought a tiger teddy and a Minnie mouse lollypop. The best part of my holiday was definitely going to the flee market it was really crowded and people were selling everything and anything people where getting there hair braided and coloured string put into there hair, the stall holders were shouting the prices of there items and people where crowding round the popular stalls. They sold everything from jewellery and clothes to shell and tacky gifts it was really hot and people crowding round you didn't help. It seemed to take hours to walk down one isle having to squeeze passed everyone trying to get through the crowds. For the rest of my holiday I sunbathed and relaxed by the pool I also went to the shopping mall and bought loads of clothes and gifts for friends.

I couldn't believe how quickly my two weeks had gone and how much fun Id had as I was leaving I felt sad to leave the villa and my own pool behind. The car drive to the airport was short and I was looking forward to going home even though I liked America so much the plane flight was quick as I fell asleep. When I got home all I wanted to do was sleep so I put my pyjamas on and went to sleep.

Nabokov's Humbert is smart, careful, and willing to do anything to catch his "prey," while Lyne's is simply, pathetically, unable to control himself. While Nabokov's Humbert is controlling the situation and spinning the web of events, Lyne's Humbert is clumsily groping in the dark for his love, his Lolita.

Besides predatory and tortured, Nabokov's Humbert is immoral. He consciously marries Charlotte Haze in order to "have his way" with her daughter, and puts tireless effort into finding just the right sleeping pill that will knock her and Lolita out, so that he can do as he pleases with Lolita. Later, Humbert hints at his skewed morality when he states that when he returns to the hotel room he is, "still firmly resolved to pursue [his] policy of sparing her purity by operating only in the stealth of the night, only upon a completely anesthetized little nude," (14) and continues to, "insist on proving that [he is] not, and never was, and never could have been, a brutal scoundrel" (11). Though Lyne's Humbert gives Charlotte sleeping pills to "avoid his husbandly duties," there is no mention of his taking advantage of Lolita in her sleep. Here, Lyne has successfully eliminated yet another part of Humbert's character that an audience would struggle to relate to or feel sympathy for. Nabokov's dynamic Humbert is almost unimaginable and the reader cringes as he looks at little girls on the streets of Ramsdale (7) or in the hotel lobby when he has just left Lolita's side (16). Humbert's "love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight" (70) for Lolita seems exaggerated and lacks credibility, as he even admits that he simply "did not know a thing about [his] darling's mind" (84). Though Lolita begins this fateful affair, Nabokov's Humbert is aware after a short time on the road with Lolita that she is no longer enjoying their situation. He notes, among other things, that when he arrives while Lolita is playing tennis with some else, she emits a "tremendous ugh of disgust at [his] intrusion" (16). Nabokov's Humbert bribes Lolita with money and swimming pools in return for sex and uses threats like leaving Lolita in an orphanage to force her to stay with him, to prolong his selfish indulgence.

The way that the director/author presents Lolita in this story is influential in how the viewer/reader regards Humbert Humbert. In the novel, Humbert writes with the wisdom of hindsight and admits his awareness of Lolita's unhappiness. She is clearly the victim in the novel, no matter what methods to justify, redeem himself, apologize for or explain his actions Humbert employs. Lyne, however, omits almost all of the instances which illustrate Lolita's misery; it is feasible for some time that Humbert does not know how Lolita feels. Soon after Charlotte dies in Lyne's movie, Lolita takes on the role of manipulator, using her sexual power over Humbert to get what she wants. The viewer can see how Humbert falls victim to his sexuality in the scene where Lolita seduces him into raising her allowance and allowing her to be in the play. Lolita brings about the power shift in the relationship; she begins, controls, and ends it. Lolita tricks Humbert into thinking that she loves him, bringing her places to see Clare Quilty, and giving her what she wants. The whole time, Lyne's Humbert is oblivious. It is Lyne's Lolita who makes the threats, calling Humbert a pervert and threatening to report him for rape. It is a complete reversal of the relationship in Nabokov's book, where, though Lolita possesses the same sexual authority over Humbert, it is Humbert who holds the positions of powerful manipulator and immoral corrupter. He forces her to live with him, sleep with him, and see no one else. Nabokov's Humbert shows no feeling for Lolita when he describes raping her

In contrast to this portrayal of a selfish, heartless Humbert, Lyne directs Lolita to laugh while Humbert rapes her, demonstrating that nothing Humbert does can hurt Lolita. Lolita laughs wildly at her rapist while he cries and begs Lolita to tell him where she has just gone. It is clear in this scene, perhaps more than any other, that Lolita has complete control over Humbert's mind and body and that she will bring or prevent his demise. In the movie, the relationship stays the same in many senses until the end, when Lolita is just fine and Humbert is a begging, helpless lover.

Nabokov does not give his reader any characters to like or to relate to. The victimized Lolita, the immoral, evil Humbert, the obnoxious Charlotte none of these characters are appealing. Nabokov is able to interest his reader through his unique writing style and the eerie quality of his story. Lyne must tell this "same story" in fewer words and ends up creating a more accessible, imaginable, and bearable story, by creating a more human Humbert that the audience can understand, if not like. These two very different Humberts account for two very different stories. Not for better or for worse, the two Humberts certainly serve for difference. One is the sad story of a tortured, helpless, man and his unfortunate love; the other, a twisted story of a sexual predator and his victim. Both stories captivate and disturb the reader/viewer, as they force him/her to think about self-control, obsession, morality, sensuality, and love.

I have gone from being a follower to being a leader, from being someone who was shy and uncertain to a person who is more self-confident and assertive. It has been a remarkable metamorphosis, and it has changed my future professional plans and personal goals.

The awakening of my independence happened 10 years ago. I had just gone through a divorce and was determined to make some changes in my life. As life is unpredictable, meeting another man interrupted my plans. I have set many different goals in my life. Some goals are more important than others, but all are important to keep. Goals in life make us what we are. My personal goals have changed over time, but so have I.

One of my goals is to continue my education, and to do well in school.

I graduated from the Baltimore Community College with an Associates of Applied Science Degree last year. I thought I would be fully prepared for the anticipated tasks that would await me at the University of Phoenix, to complete my Bachelors of Science, but after my very first class I felt anxiety and stress. Nevertheless, I am aware students have taken this course previously were able to complete the assignments on time, so I will face my fears and do everything in my power to hand in assignments and tasks in a timely fashion.

Another goal of mine is to give my son a good example of how one can accomplish anything they have their mind set to. I remember as a child I was never encouraged to follow my dreams, rather discouraged or laughed at. It took me a long time to over-come these feelings of incompetence and inadequateness. I would never want my children to experience such abuse. However I empowered myself, and now nothing can stop me. I encourage my children to follow their dreams, just like I follow mine. I try and give them the best base to have a solid foundation, in order for them to take on any challenge without hesitation. This is a life task, and sometimes I feel a hopeless battle, but

Their happiness means everything to me, and if I can be part of this happiness, or even contributed to it, than one of my greatest dreams and goals have come true.

Constant self-improvement is the key to success. I usually map out my goals at the beginning of the year. I am eager to learn, and look forward to new found knowledge that I am able to apply to every day life situations. I follow my goals carefully and try not to stray from them; at times adjustments are being made if the situation asks for it. A detour still brings you to the same destination, as long as you follow the arrows that bring you back to your original route.

Additional, one of my goals is to reduce my weight, and get back in shape. I am currently a member of a Fitness Center and have committed myself to a daily rigid workout. I have not reached my weight goal yet, but my body has changed to a statue that I can accept. I am not completely happy with it, save to say I probably never will be. I am at a point were I look forward to the summer time and I am able to wear shorts. My mental well-being is greatly affected by my body shape and weight. I know what I can look like, and I am not working up to my potential, due to time restraints. Unfortunately some things have to take a lower priority if you are trying to complete multiple tasks, and work full time at the same time. These are obstacles have to be conquered, and may easily distract, but determination and the will to succeed will keep my eye on the goal. I know my hard work will pay off. As I look toward my future I feel the will power and the dreams that I have strived for all my life. If everything goes as planned, those
