THE MANY PERCEPTIONS OF FREEDOM


We are all thought to be free. We are able to make our own decisions, do what we wish, and act in a manner that we deem fit for appropriate situations in life. In changing our actions according to certain situations deemed appropriate, are we not complying to some sort of restraint? In this instance, what exactly is defined by the term freedom? According to Douglass in My Bondage and My Freedom, freedom to was about his social privileges and class. Despite what most may think, freedom has taken on many forms of definitions according to different people and other sources alike including The Declaration of Independence, The U.S. Constitution, and Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom.


The idea of being "free" can be easily seen by taking a look at The Declaration of Independence. Through this document, we see the initial government document where the United Colonies deliver this notion of having the right to be "free" and independent States, separate from Great Britain. Just as slaves would feel, the representatives of the citizens residing in these United Colonies felt as though they were being treated unjustly and demanded their "freedom" from Great Britain. Again, this thought of being "free" is shown through quotes of the Declaration of Independence including "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." (The Declaration of Independence 45) By paying close attention to the last portion of this statement about the pursuit of happiness, we can begin understanding our definition of freedom. The natural feeling in gaining freedom is to feel happy and in part work towards pursuing that which makes you happy. In this case with the Declaration of Independence, we see the pursuit of happiness through rights and opportunities to obtain this state of freedom.


By taking a close look at Frederick Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom, we are able to elaborate on this idea of pursuing happiness from a slave's point of view.

An example of this idea of pursuing happiness is shown to the reader when Douglass says "It was a resurrection from the dark and pestiferous tomb of slavery, to the heaven of comparative freedom." In Douglass's mind, he feels as though he is one step closer to freedom. Douglass has earned the right not to be beaten as he resists his tormentors, and eventually succeeds in rebuilding his hopes of reaching the imaginable dream of freedom. In expressing his feelings about his rights, Douglass states "It recalled to life my crushed self-respect and my self-confidence, and inspired me with a renewed determination to be a FREEMAN." (My Bondage and My Freedom 46) Douglass elaborates on this notion of renewed determination by saying "He has a domain as broad as his own manly heart to defend, and he is really "a power on earth"." (My Bondage and My Freedom 47) The idea of a slave truly being a power on earth is related to the idea of being "free" with rights. Just as whites are thought to have power, we see Douglass's expressions about slaves obtaining such a power and possibly an even greater power as they gain confidence in themselves and begin to believe that "freedom" is possible. It is here that we begin to take a look at the limitations that accompany freedom discussed by Douglass. Just as blacks were provided with restraints against their gaining a sense of freedom, whites and Covey in particular are provided with similar restraints in that slaves have a power within themselves. However, with most slaves, this power is restrained by their masters in order to keep them in fear of what might happen if they attempted to display their power. "Every slaveholder seeks to impress his slave with a belief in the boundlessness of slave territory, and of his own almost illimitable power." (My Bondage and My Freedom 81) The goal of the slaveholder, in this manner, is to keep the slave from attempting to understand the system of slavery. In order to do this; the slaveholder shows his aggression towards his slaves to appear as a God-like figure to them. This leaves the slaves to ponder about what freedom really is and if it even exists.


It is in my opinion that freedom is composed of privileges and rights granted.


This notion of freedom and rights of citizens continues through specific portions of the United States Constitution as well. The U.S. Constitution states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." (Article XIII United States Constitution 57) According to the above statement , freedom has been defined as the abolishment of slavery. This statement may be viewed as truth in that those who were once slaves are now "free" from any form of slavery unless being punished for some sort of crime. Article XIII of the United States Constitution has without a doubt, to some extent, exemplified a sense of freedom. To slaves at this time, this was seen as "free." However, they hadn't obtained rights that were put to use by those considered United States citizens beforehand.In addition to Article XIII, the Constitution states that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude-" (Article XV Section. 1 United States Constitution 58)


Section number one of Article XV from the U.S. Constitution adds to this notion of freedom. In granting one's freedom, rights of a citizen should also be granted. This section of Article XV has granted one of the most important rights to our society, the right to vote. Not only are blacks receiving their "freedom," but they are also becoming what is said to be more like "American citizens." In a sense, they are now able to take part in governmental events, and act as individuals. Through the United States Constitution, we see a shift in the rights of black slaves. They have come from being slaves, and property, to being "free" and in a sense "real people." This notion of rights being an enormous part of our freedom can be seen today in how our society and nation in general is operated. Through this section of the Constitution we, once again, continue to add to this universally accepted definition of "freedom" and what it includes.


The term freedom has a broad range of meanings, from the complete absence of restraint, to not being bothered or frustrated. Yet, it seems that in the novel entitled "My Bondage and My Freedom," by Frederick Douglass, Douglass seems to view freedom as a sense of independence as a citizen, and from the social restraints of the society in which he was born into. Freedom holds different meanings to different people, but in general, I believe that freedom is a state of being in which one is carefree, in that they are granted the opportunity to think, act, and behave as they would choose to. In addition to this, I believe that freedom does not come easily without its limitations, restraints, and regulations, as do most, if not all things in life. We as a people are granted a freedom, but under a concise view in which we all remain restricted to some sort of slavery equally and collectively. A type of freedom without limitations, rules, or restraints leads us to a sense of chaos. Once again, the universally accepted definition of freedom will be altered depending on the viewpoint of the individual defining the term. However, in defining freedom, we must take into account what is right, the needs of individuals as well as our society, and the unalienable rights granted to all people regardless of status or ethnic background.

In the late sixteen hundreds, many different European's came to the Americas for many different reasons. German Immigrants came to America for mainly two reasons. Religious freedom and the quest for land caused many Germans to migrate to America. At the beginning of the 18th century, economic problems in Germany brought a new wave of immigrants. Nearly one million German immigrants entered the United States in the 1850s; this included thousands of refugees from the 1848 revolutions in Europe. In these later phases of German immigration, newcomers joined established settlers. This phenomenon of chain migration strengthened the already existing German regions in the United States." Today, approximately 58 million Americans claim German ancestry. They are most numerous in California, followed by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Texas. The most dense German-American populations are in the German belt -- Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa"(.


The first German immigrants in America came seeking land and the promise of religious freedom. They had heard that both could be found in the newly chartered colony of Pennsylvania, which was governed by a Quaker, William Penn. "Francis Daniel Pastorius, an agent for a land purchasing company in the city of Frankfurt am Main, organized the original party of settlers. Settlers representing a variety of Protestant religious groups began descending on Germantown. Germantowns citizens were pious, peaceful, industrious people, who quickly established southeastern Pennsylvania as a leading agricultural region.

In addition to the war with Germany, the German presence in the United States was seem by many as a threat because in 100, over 15% of people in the United States had an immediate enough German heritage that they still spoke German. In the aftermath of two World Wars against Germany, Americans with German lineage often take a subdued approach to their heritage" (German Immigrants).


For some German/Americans the integration into the new country was extremely hard. Some just came to make some money and later returned home. Dear Mr Lee also has examples of misunderstanding in them. The child is misunderstood by his English teacher. Mr Smart (the teacher) is condemned by Fanthorpe because in his quest for academic "cogent" responses he looses sight of a boy's passion for literature. This can be seen as a modern situation as teachers are sometimes seen by a student to be more attentive to the more academic students.


You Will Be Hearing From Us Shortly is based on a job interview. This poem could have been targeted to adults as they are more likely to be attending job interviews where as Dear Mr Lee can be seen as targeting students as it is about a child. There are many more examples but just from these two you can see that Fanthorpe has already targeted two main audiences (school children and working adults). Allowing her poetry to be related with a scenario her targeted audience can relate to allows for a more effective poem than that of one for every type of audience.

"Managing self competency involves the ability to assess your own strengths and weaknesses; set and pursue professional and personal goals; balance work and personal life; and engage in new learning-including new or changed skills, behaviors, and attitudes"(Hellriegel et al., 001).There are several core components for the managing self competency.The first is to understand my own and others' personality and attitudes.Over time, I have come to realize who I, Tara Barnette, truly am.For so long I tried to be like the type of people with whom I "hung around" with.I have finally come to realize what my own values and beliefs are-not my parents and not my friends.I have also come to realize not everyone is or will ever be like me.There may be similarities, but no one is like another; furthermore, you can't change a person's personality or attitude no matter how hard you try.The next core component is the ability to identify, evaluate, and understand myself, others and the immediate environment.For this factor, I have taken the MBTI.With this test I have learned I am an ESFP (Extraverted, Sensor, Feeler, and Perceiver).Generally, I have found that I am warm-hearted, outgoing, accepting, and friendly, enjoy everything and make things more fun for others by their enjoyment.I like action and making things happen.I enjoy knowing what's going on and join in eagerly.I find remembering facts easier than mastering theories.I am best in situations that need sound common sense and practical ability with people (Barger, Kirby, 15).With this in mind, I must evaluate other people around me and know how they best operate.The next core component is the ability to understand and act on my own and others' work-related motivations and emotions.I have found that I am most motivated by personal feedback, seeing my work affect others positively, and recognition.Everyone is motivated by something different-the key to a good leader is motivating each employee with what "makes them tick" and not use the same motivation for every person.The next core component is the ability to assess and establish my own developmental, personal, and work-related goals.Due to a class I am taking this semester, Senior Practicum Prep, I have analyzed myself and established my personal and work-related goals.My personal goal is to complete my BHS degree by May 004, and then implement what I have learned by finding a career, such as Pharmaceutical Representative, that allows me to utilize what I have learned.The last but not least core component is the ability to take responsibility for managing myself and my career over time and through stressful circumstances.Right now my career is school.I have kept a daily planner that has made me develop a daily plan of action for getting my school work done and still allow time for relaxation and doing things I enjoy.On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest level, I would rate myself a 5.I rated myself this because I feel I have an excellent grasp on assessing myself and others.Not only is managing self competency important, but also, managing communication.


Managing Communication Competency


"Managing communication involves the ability to use all the modes of transmitting, understanding, and receiving ideas, thoughts, and feelings-verbal, listening, nonverbal, written, electronic, and the like-for accurately transferring and exchanging information and emotions"(Hellriegel et al., 001).Like self competency, this too has several core components.The first element is the ability to convey information, ideas, and emotions to others in such a way that they are received as intended.I believe I have a strong describing skill-in other words, I am able to relay clearly and accurately what I am trying to say.The next factor is the ability to provide constructive feedback to others.Due to the fact that I am motivated by feedback, I find this concept exceptionally important.There is a fine line between constructive criticism and degrading someone.As I once heard, it's all about how you say something, not necessarily what you say.The next component is the ability to engage in active listening-the process of integrating informational and emotional inputs in a search for shared meaning and understanding.I feel that I use the questioning skill-the ability to ask for information and opinions in a way that gets relevant, honest, and appropriate responses.I used this skill primarily during interviews with other leaders.During the interviews, both leaders expressed how vital communication is.Without communication, whether it's nonverbal, verbal, written, or via internet, goals and objectives can not be achieved to their fullest extent and issues will never be resolved.On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate myself a 4.I feel I get my point across to other people, but feel I could do a better job, especially in persuasion.Not only are managing self and communication important, but also, managing diversity.


Managing Diversity


"Managing diversity involves the ability to value unique individual and group characteristics, embrace such characteristics as potential sources of organizational strength, and appreciate the uniqueness of each individual"(Hellriegel et al., 001).Like the other competencies, this too has several core components.The first is the ability to encourage an environment of inclusion with those who posses characteristics different from your own.Like both leaders said in the interview, if you have all Chiefs and no Indians, nothing will get done; everyone will be too busy telling someone else what to do.I am in complete agreement with this statement.It is always important to seek variety and different views.If everyone thought the same, inspiration would have no meaning.The next component is the ability to learn from those with different characteristics, experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.I feel I am open-minded and am always seeking information from various people before I make a decision.I always look to someone I know has my best interest at heart, I look to someone who knows a lot about the subject, and I look to someone who is unbiased.After information is gathered, I am able to make a well-rounded decision.The next factor is the ability to embrace and develop personal tendencies that support diversity in the workplace and elsewhere.An example of this is from my last job.Every time I had a new idea, I sought out all 10 people and got their view on my idea and how it would affect them.I have always tried to be personal in and outside the work place with other individuals different than me.It is a fact that bringing diversity to the table can only enhance a situation, not diminish it.The next component is walking the talk.So many people think it is okay to have the guideline, "do as I say, not as I do."What good is it for example, an individual tell me it is wrong to steal from the company, but yet they take money themselves?People abide by what you do, not what you say.This is why the saying is true, "actions speak louder than words."The last but not least component is the ability to apply laws and regulations.Policies and rules were put into place for a reason, not for the sake of more paperwork or to make your job harder or less fun.In today's society it is difficult to know whether you got a job because you are qualified or because of your race or gender.The law does state not to be discriminatory, but taking it to the point of hiring someone because of their race or gender instead of who's the best candidate, is taking it too far.On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate myself a 5.I am an open-minded person and believe completely that diversity has much to offer and offers "checks and balances."In the reading of The Challenge of Change in Organizations, there was a quote that I feel sums this topic up; "The personnel of our train were…a wonderful collection of many people with as many different dispositions and characteristics." Not only are managing self, communication, and diversity important, but also, managing ethics.


Managing Ethics Competency


"The managing ethics competency involves the ability to incorporate values and principles that distinguish right from wrong in making decisions and choosing behaviors" (Hellriegel et al., 001).Like the other competencies, ethics too has core components.The first core component is the ability to identify and describe the principles of ethical decision making and behavior.Although many of us would like to believe we live in a world of total trust and respect, unfortunately it's not true.Ethical dilemmas can be a touchy subject.So many times managers and employees come across situations in which there is not a right or wrong.In this case, you must lean on your heart and instinct and do what feels right.I feel I am strong in this area.I have always stepped back, analyzed the situation, and think to myself-how will this affect others?At this point, a rational decision can be made.Another component is the ability to assess the importance of ethical issues in considering alternative courses of action.For so many years I use to act before I thought.Although I still struggle with this a little, with practice I have gotten better.When dealing with ethics, there are several things you must consider the magnitude of consequences, the probability of effect, the social consensus, the temporal immediacy, the proximity, and the concentration of affect.For these things, it is best to apply the laws and rules of conduct-honesty and openness.On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate myself a 4.I have a strong Christian background that gives me a loud conscious; however, I still struggle time to time with the fine lines between right and wrong, and thinking before acting.Not only are managing self, communication, diversity, and ethics important, but also managing teams.


Managing Teams Competency


"The managing teams competency involves the ability to develop, support, facilitate, and lead groups to achieve organizational goals" (Hellriegel et al, 001).Team-what does is mean?This is one of my favorite words; so much so, I made up an acronym for itT-together, E-everyone, A-achieves, M-much.As with the other competencies, this too has core components.First, one must acquire the skill of determining the circumstances and choose whether a team approach is best; and if so, the ability to participate in and/or lead the people through a process of goals.I have always believed that team work is something to be desired in a work place.I have always pulled my own weight and expected others to do the same.I have a tendency to take on the "leader" role when in a team.I generally pose goals and a clear way of reaching those goals.If someone begins to slack off, I try to motivate them in a way that is fitting to their personality, and tactfully tell them how to reach a goal by pulling their weight. It is like Coach K stated in his book Leading with the Heart, "You develop a team to achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone.All of us alone are weaker, by far, than if all of us are together.The other component is the ability to deal with personal and task-related conflicts among team members before they become disruptive.Also, one must take corrective action if needed.In general, I take the individual aside where no one else is around and find out what the root of the problem is.I try to re-direct their energy into a positive manner.If the first warning doesn't work, another counseling session is held.Then, if the problem arises again, that individual may be let go.On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate myself a 5.Since the day I was born, I have had a leadership personality waiting to be used.I have had practice in work and in school being a leader.This is something I have a strong desire for and plan to seek in the future.Not only are managing self, communication, diversity, ethics, and teams important, but also managing change.


Managing Change Competency


"The managing change competency involves the ability to recognize and implement needed adaptations or entirely new transformations in the people, tasks, strategies, structures, or technologies in a person's area of responsibility" (Hellriegel et al, 001).The challenge of change in an organization can be a tricky situation.As a leader, you must posses the leadership ability to help employees succeed in the new situation.In order to be successful in helping those employees, you must first be able to apply the previous competencies.As with the previous competencies, this too has core components.The first component is the ability to provide leadership to changing situations.You must be able to diagnose pressures and resistance to change, and the plan of action to help employees.When diagnosing, I try to ask questions such as How does the environment make you feel?What is the root of your resistance or pressure?What can I do to help you overcome these pressures or fears and help you succeed?What were the things that made you feel comfortable before the change?What issues need to be taken care of and left behind?After seeking answers and learning about each individual, I would apply whatever model of change best suited our company.On the flip side of this, I am an individual whose wheels are always turning.In my last job, I was known as the "great ideas" girl.I am always looking for ways to improve and make things more efficient and exciting (sometimes I think I drove my manager nuts!).It was quite touching that when I was leaving Anderson Neurological, they gave me a little ceramic angel piggy bank that says "great ideas" on it.They stated, "We expect many great ideas from you in the future.Every time you have a great idea, put a penny in the bank, and one day you'll be a millionaire."On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate myself a 5.I love changes and the new challenges it brings.Life is too short to stay monotonous; change and challenge stimulate the brain!


Conclusion


Over the course of this semester, I have learned a lot about myself and others.The competencies discussed in this PLAP are the ones that had the greatest impact on me.Now the challenge is to take this knowledge and apply it accordingly.Starting in the fall, I will continue taking classes to finish my Bachelor of Health Science degree and finish in the spring of 004.The remaining classes will follow up improving my strengths and weaknesses and then upon graduation, I will seek a career that will allow me to implement these competencies.For each competency discussed, I have thought how I can improve each.The Western Energy Institute provides a great site for leadership assessment and development guide.I found this helpful for three reasons review a leadership model, assess my current strengths and areas of development, and lastly, goal setting and development planning worksheet. For managing self, I will continue to keep a daily/weekly/monthly planner, and keep up with it until time management and goal setting becomes second nature to me.For managing communication, I will continue transmitting, receiving, and applying more in-depth thoughts and conversation via internet, verbal, nonverbal, or written.For managing diversity, I will continue to seek unbiased and diverse answers for all situations.At times it may be difficult because you don't want to hear the answer, but those thoughts are important as well.For managing ethics, I will continue working on thinking before acting.This rule can apply personally or professionally.For managing teams, I will continue to realize that the world does not revolve because one person can do it all, but because that a group of people-a team-pitch in and help.The job I plan to pursue has the capability of persuading individualism, but teams can be formed and will make a greater impact.For managing change, I will look more closely at how others perceive my "great ideas" and decide by looking at the big picture, is this change worth the challenges it will posses or will it impose a magnitude of problems? In the book The 1 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, Maxwell stated there are four phases of leadership.Phase I- I don't know what I don't know.Phase II- I know what I don't know.Phase III-I grow and know and it starts to show.Phase IV-I simply go because of what I know.Over the years to come, I plan to go through these phases step-by-step.With the help of the knowledge I've gained, I feel I will be successful.When I was getting ready to relocate to Summerville, SC, I had the opportunity to take a test called Strong Interest Inventory.This was a great help to me because it showed me what kind of personality I have and how I can best use my skills.In short, the report stated I showed most interest in three themes enterprising, social and conventional.What makes the themes unique is the underlying career motivator-what stimulates me to achieve my career.My highest interest is in Enterprising.Therefore, my strongest motivator is in persuading and selling.I also showed a high interest in Social.Therefore, helping others will be a strong motivator as well.The work that would bring me the most career satisfaction would most likely involve making decisions and persuading others of the value of something that is personally important to me or helpful to others.With this information, I will take it to heart, and act upon it after graduation.
