In "The Heart of Darkness," Conrad reiterates the idea of isolation in order to show the reader the underlying theme of civilization versus savagery. Conrad is trying to convey to us the idea that every man possesses a heart of darkness that is usually restrained by the societal norms that one encounters. When a person is isolated from the restraints of society and work, it is hard for that person to resist the evil that has been previously controlled by the society. We could not understand because we were too far and could not remember, because we were travelling in the night of first ages, of those ages that are gone, leaving hardly a signand no memories" (1). Marlow portrays the earth as prehistoric and lacking the control that the European society has. "The rest of the world was nowhere, as far as our eyes and ears were concerned. Just nowhere. Gone, disappeared; swept off without leaving a whisper or a shadow behind" (15). Again, he makes us feel the immense sense of isolation from European society that he is experiencing.

When Marlow finally makes his way too find Kurtz, he realizes that Kurtz is not the emissary of light that he had imagined him to be. Nonetheless, Marlow defends him by saying that it is very difficult to keep oneself civilized without the societal restraints and when one has faced total solitude.

When Kurtz came into a situation in which there were no external restraints, he lacked the internal strength, which could keep him from becoming a savage. "…Mr. Kurtz lacked restraint in the gratification of his various lusts, that there was something wanting in him some small matter which, when the pressing need arose, could not be found under his magnificent eloquence" (0). Unlike Marlow, who had his work and the belief in the idea which allowed him to resist the temptation of the darkness, Kurtz ignored all of the external restraints and allowed himself to be controlled by his desires." But the wilderness had found him out early, and had taken on him a terrible vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core" (0).

Marlow again reiterates to his shipmates that being alone in the wilderness is what drove Kurtz mad. "But his soul was mad. Being alone in the wilderness, it had looked within itself, and by heavens! I tell you, it had gone mad… I saw the inconceivable mystery of a soul that knew no restraint, no faith, and no fear, yet struggling blindly with itself" (7). Marlow makes the point that what was responsible for his madness was Kurtz's self-imposed isolation within the wilderness. He chose to stay in the wilderness instead of going back to Europe and he did not possess any internal checks that would allow him to remain civilized.

Marlow and Kurtz can be seen as two opposites who, when in isolated from society, take totally different paths. Marlow represents a civilized person who is able to resist the darkness of the jungle, while Kurtz represent a person who is left to deal with his own desires without the restraints of society. "He had made the last stride, he had stepped over the edge, while I had been permitted to draw back my hesitating foot. And perhaps in this is the whole difference; perhaps all the wisdom, and all truth, and all sincerity, are just compressed into that inappreciable moment of time in which we step over the threshold of the invisible" (41).

The discovery of nuclear technology has catalyzed a "metamorphosis" in the definition of military might. Now, countries that have access to this technology have the capability to project their military power even greater than they ever did. As Albert Einstein said, "the unleashed power of the atom-bomb has changed everything… and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe" (cited in Gregory, 186, p. ).

The discovery of new weapons, as Freeman Dyson argues in his book entitled Weapons & Hope, have "traditionally provided nations with hope for winning wars" (Gregory, 186). This was also the case during the discovery of the A-bomb. The US hoped to end the Second World War by developing a weapon that will strike fear to the enemy. Hence, the US made the decision to push through a project named the "Manhattan Project" in Los Alamos, New Mexico in order to research on this weapon. On the July of 145, the scientist successfully tested the most powerful weapon to manthe A-bomb. A month after they were dropped by the US in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

True, that the "bomb" indeed ended the war, but the victory was shrouded by inexpressible human tragedy and the knowledge that the world will never be the same. As a result, we now live in world that of threat and the only way to deter this threat is via projecting nuclear military might.

A Brief History

The birth of the Nuclear age began in August , 1 when Albert Einstein, a German physicist, wrote a letter to US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt informing him about the discovery of atomic energy which can be used to produce bombs. In the letter Einstein quoted "extremely powerful bombs can be constructed" (cited in Gregory, 186, p.40). This message prompted F. Roosevelt to initiate the massive research in the US for the development of atomic/ nuclear weapons coined as the "Manhattan Project".

The Manhattan Project was tasked in the development of nuclear weapons. A group of scientists headed by US Army general Leslie Groves and chief physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was sent to the vast deserts of Los Alamos, New Mexico in14 to develop atomic bombs. The top-secret project successfully tested the first atomic bomb in July 16, 145. After the successful testing in the desert the US officially entered the Nuclear Age.

As the tide of war continued to change towards the side of the Allies during the early part of 145, the US decided to use its newfound power in the battlefield hoping it will end the war. On the 6th day of August 145 the world witnessed the immense power of the US when they dropped the first atomic bomb, famously known as "Little Boy", on the Japanese City of Hiroshima (Encarta Encyclopedia 001). In August , 145, three days after the Hiroshima bombing, the second atomic bomb dubbed as "Fat Man" was dropped in Nagasaki (Encarta Encyclopedia 001). The devastation of the Japanese cities via the atomic bomb prompted the end of the Second World War. The Japanese surrender in August 14 marked the end of the Second World War (Encarta Encyclopedia 001).

The Second World War ended with a victory for the US and its allies, but it marked the start of an era where humanity will live a life of threattotal annihilation. As time passed by, America's monopoly over nuclear technology ended as the Soviets successfully tested their atomic bomb in the summer of 14. The successful testing by the Soviets prompted the friction between the two countriesthe Cold Warin which nuclear arms were involved.

The Cold War was a battle between two different ideologies American Democracy and Soviet Communism. It is also a conflict of technologies and military supremacy. The tension between the two hegemons dates back in the late 140's and ended in the 10's with the disbandment of the USSR.

The Cold War was characterized by the Arm's race between the US and Soviets. Arms involved both conventional and nuclear weapons. During this era the Americans and the Soviets funded huge amounts of money into the development of the military.As a result of huge military budget, both countries developed and deployed numerous amounts of armaments especially nuclear weapons, which amounts to a total of 5,000 (approx. combined) (Halle, 180,p.5).

Tension during the Cold War heightened in 16 when American intelligence found out that the Soviets were planning to stage nuclear missiles into Cuba. Missiles in Cuba were deemed by the US as a direct threat to US security prompting the Americans to panic and fear. Due to the crisis in Cuba, the US prepared for war under the order of President J.F. Kennedy. In his speech he said, "should the Soviets fire a missile from Cuba will mean a full retaliatory attack by the US against the USSR" (cited in Encarta Encyclopedia 001). He also argued, "the gravest issues would arise" should the Soviets continue their aggression (Gaddis 181). As an answer to the tension in Cuba, JFK ordered a naval blockade in October nd of that year, which he termed as naval "quarantine" for a blockade, is considered an act of war.

The tension subsided when both nations came into agreement that "a nuclear war would be catastrophic for both". On October 8, 16 the US and USSR agreed to put down their arms with promises that the US wont invade Cuba and will remove its missiles in Turkey and the Soviets will withdraw their missiles in Cuba.

The resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis also marked the start of the easing of tensions between the US and the USSR. The fear of starting a nuclear war caused both countries to come into agreement in July 16, in which they signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in Britain (Encarta Encyclopedia 001). The treaty contained the resolution that both countries will lessen if not stop their research into nuclear weapons.

The Nuclear Powers

The term nuclear power is commonly associated to the US and Russia (former USSR) because of their massive military, more specifically nuclear build-up during the Cold War. Even though the Cold War has ended and various treaties have been signed, such as the SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty I & II) in the mid 170's until early 180's, the US and Russia still maintains the world's largest nuclear arsenals.

The nuclear arsenals of both the US and Russia are controlled their air force and navy. As part of the SALT I, both countries should decommission the nuclear weapons controlled by their armies. The Navy and Air Force of both countries comprise the nuclear "triad"nuclear weapons delivery via bombers, ICBMs and Submarine. The triad assures that even if the ICBMs and Bombers are destroyed in a nuclear first-strike, the attacked country will still be capable of launching a retaliatory attack and inflict major damage to the attacker.

Since the end of the Cold War, the nuclear arsenals of the Russia (formerly USSR) and the United states have decreased by almost 60% due mainly to the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaties (SALT II & II) and the disbandment of the Soviet Union. Juliet is frightened that she might wake up before Romeo comes and have to lie in a room where she might even die of suffocation. She further states, " Shall I not be stifled in the vault, to whose foul mouth no healthsome air breaths in, and there die strangled.." (ll. 4-5, pg. 1) She begins to imagine the dirty, suffocating conditions she will soon see and all the horrors are drawing closer to her. She is afraid of the risk she is taking because he life is at stake. Juliet fears of death and the huge burden that she now carries about whether to take the potion or not.

In her chaotic state of mind, Juliet also shows fear of deceit because she even begins to ponder the chance that Friar Lawrence, who she knows is a very well intentioned man, poisoned her vial and purposely wants her dead. She states, " What if it be a poison which the Friar subtly hath ministered to have me dead…because he married me before to Romeo?" (ll. 6, pg. 1) During her moment before taking the potion, her mind is in a state of hysteria so she begins to think of unimaginable things. She thinks that Friar Lawrence has poisoned her drink because he is trying to get rid of her and all the troubles she has caused him. Finally, she has fear of marriage to the wrong person, who in this case, is Paris. Since she has already secretly married Romeo, her true love, not only would marrying Paris be against her will, but it would be considered a sin. The whole purpose of taking the potion in the first place was for Juliet to run off with Romeo to Mantua and live there with him until he was no longer banished. However, she fears that if the potion fails to work, she would have to wake up the next morning, and marry Paris just as planned, something she really does not desire. She states," What if this mixture do not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no, this shall forbid it." (ll. -, pg. 11) Her mind is full of confusion and while she thinks of all the horrible possibilities, she then tries to contradict herself but saying she will not allow it to happen. From her soliloquy, it is inferred that she is not in a state of calmness at that moment because she is at the verge of taking a huge risk with a questionable future ahead of her.

However, although Juliet has many fears and emotions that run through her mind showing she is in a state of panic and doubt, she still goes through with her plan, and thus shows she is a very determined person deeply in love with Romeo. She surpasses her fear of risk-taking, deceit by the friar, and marriage to Paris and takes the vial as a gesture of her love for Romeo. Her fears intensify the scene tremendously and Shakespeare cleverly includes it in her soliloquy as a way to lure the audience. Management of the upload priority

The optionBoost less uploaded fileallows the files inAuto-prioritymod in the upload level to be regulated in the number of send in order to boost the less uploaded files and so to share equally each file in auto-priority.

We have integrated all the features and patch from ZZ which the main idea is to allow an advanced management of upload system according to the following rule The best diffusion of the files.

So the ZZ patch manages the upload to have the less possible upload slot to the highest possible speed. This system allow to send more quickly a complete chunk (part of a file) to a client who can then in his turn place the chunk at the disposal of the others users on the network that gives so more sources during in shorter time and allows a faster diffusion of the file. Some slots of control to low flow are also created to avoid the abrupt falls of the upload at the end of a send. These slots ensure the transition between the upload slots for a better stability of the main upload.

You can see which is the slot has the highest priority at one given moment in the columnslot #(lower is the number; higher is the upload slot priority).

The upload priority of each chunk is taken into account in your upload slot. With each upload slot which starts, the percentage of availability of the chunk is checked and if this last is rare then it will have the highest slot priority and so the best upload speed. This percentage is visible in the columnChunk Availabilityin the upload slot list.

The management of the overhead (sending of additional data required to control the data exchanged as well as various ones require connections or sources exchanges) was optimised to avoid too strong higher points which could then make fall the upload. Moreover the overhead is now taken into account in the management of the upload limit.

Management of the uploaddownload ratio

If you activate theZZ ratio systemthen the upload speed/download speed ratio of the official version leave its place to a ratio of data of 14 per session (so until you restart eMule). It mean that if you are with the top of the 14 ratio (Exif you have uploaded 1Mb and downloaded 5Mb, ratio 15), your limit of download will go down gradually to reach the ratio limit. Note that if you are below the ratio 14 you won't have any speed limit in download. This data ratio allows a greater balance of upload/download for all and in particular for small connections and for people who make session of "exclusive upload" by night and must limit the upload very low by day.

If you use the co-releaser/friend slot then you will automatically pass in ZZ ratio system mod even if you don't have activate it in your Preferences to avoid than you always upload to friends (please consult the "Management of the share" for further explains).

You can choose to share of exclusiveness a file without having to remove the share of your other files.For that you can place your files in Powershare in your shared list with the options present on a click right on the desired file.With this option, you will share in extreme priority these files as long as you will have a user in your queue which will require them.The files placed in powershare also use the traditional priorities but only between them.This function makes it possible to allocate all your band-width in upload with your files in release and so 100% of effectiveness of your band-width in upload for them!In conclusion, the dream of all releaser.

You can open many friendly/co-releasers as you wish.If you open many friendly/co-releasers to give the maximum of possible complete sources then these slots will cycling to allow each one to have the same amount of sending.If Co-releasers/friends also open slots friendly slot then the file will be inevitably distributed very quickly and numbers of complete sources will be very significant from the start of its setting in share, which is a pledge of good diffusion of the file on the network.You affect these slots even if the person is not connected yet on the network and the installation of the slots is safeguarded and positioned back to each relaunch of eMule (each new session).Caution however, these slots do not count within your limit of ratio of data 14 (cf Management of the upload).

All the optimizations or fixes made by Morph TEAM but which not having a direct impact on the use of the MOD were of course not documented here but are for the majority in the Change log file distributed with each version.

We integrated the Management of FunnyNick which replaces the name of the users using the nickname (pseudo used under eMule) www.emule-project.net by [ MorphNick ] + a combination of random words. The American Labor Movement of the nineteenth century developed as a result of the city-wide organizations that unhappy workers were establishing. These men and women were determined to receive the rights and privileges they deserved as citizens of a free country.
