Just before World War I there was an American general named Black Jack Pershing stationed in the Philippines at the time an attack was made by Islamic militants that killed more than a hundredAmericans. Then let him summon his associates; We too will summon the guards of Hell Nay! Obey him not; but adore, and draw nigh to God." (The Koran), is set forth, by Mohamed, in the Koran as the first example of how the Muslims must deal with nonbelievers. There are also passages to state that any Muslim who peacefully associates with Jews and Christians are no better than the Infidels themselves, and are to be dealt with in the same manner. Daniel Pipes speaks of Islamic militants attacking churches and "bragging of having killed the nonbelievers(Pipes, AWAW?)."


There are only two ways to change this violent ideological system. One of which will probably not work and the other will be seen by many to make those who would bring about this change as barbaric and worse than the Islamic fundamentalist regimes. One could imagine getting members of the Islamic faith to change their mind about everything they believe in, but that would be like trying to convince the Pope that there is no Jesus Christ, so that option gets ruled out immediately. A holy war is what it will take to defeat this evil that plagues the world right now. Any war against terrorism is a holy war, because it isn't really a war between countries and people, but a war between idea systems, and the only way to purge an idea is to destroy all traces of that idea. Everyone who practices the true Islamic faith will have to be wiped clean from the Earth along with any literature involving that idea. It will take a virtual genocide of the Muslim people to stop the violence. This will alienate many people around the world but what has to be done in order to survive has to be done. There can never be peace without war. If the Muslims want a "Jihad"(Pipes, WIJ?),then the only option is to give it to them

Plot


The novel begins with a long story of how the book came to be written.The narrator, who does not identify himself, was the surveyor of the custom-house is Salem, Massachusetts.He describes the place as abandoned and boring.One day he ventures up to an abandoned room on the second floor and finds and Scarlet Letter with a parchment attached to it with a story of the Scarlet Letter written two hundred years before the narrator's time.After getting fires from his customs post, he decides to write a fictional account of the Scarlet Letter based on the parchment attached to it.The Scarlet Letter is the finished project.


The story begins with Hester Prynne coming put of the jail with her daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the Scarlet Letter on her bosom in a Puritan town is Boston, Massachusetts in the seventeenth century.She has been accused of committing adultery, and has been given the punishment of wearing the Scarlet Letter for the rest of her life andhas ro stand on a pedestal before the whole town while they condemn her.The town fathers try persistently to get the name of her lover, but she refuses to give it.She later sees her missing husband whom she thought was dead in the crowd watching her.She is put back in jail for not revealing the name of her lover.Her husband, now known as Roger Chillingworth, comes to visit her in jail.He makes her promise to not reveal his identity and says that he will have revenge on the father of the child.After a few days she is released from jail, and returns to a cottage that she has made her home.Several years pass.Hester supports Pearl and herself by becoming a seamstress, and Pearl grows up to be a very mischievous but clever child.A group of community officials attempt to take Pearl away from her mother, but after Arthur Dimmesdale, a young minister, speaks up for the child and mother, Hester is permitted to keep Pearl.Arthur Dimmesdale appears to be wasting away and suffers from mysterious heart problems.Chillingworth, who now claims to be a physician, moves in with and devotes his time to Dimmesdale.He suspects that there might be a connection between Dimmesdale and Hester.One afternoon while the minister is sleeping, Chillingworth sneaks in to Dimmesdale's bedroom and rips open his shirt and finds a terrible marking on the minister's bosom which we later find out is the Scarlet Letter.


The Minister is constantly finding ways to punish himself.Meanwhile, Hester's charitable deeds have caused less people to harass and condemn her.Some people start to believe that the "A" stands for able.One night, on their way home from a deathbed, Hester and Pearl see a Dimmesdale on top of the scaffold.They join him and link hands together.Pearl asks him if this means that he will stand in front of the townspeople with them, but he says no.They are startled a meteor that has marked a dull "A" in the night sky right above them.After seeing that Dimmesdale's condition is becoming much worse, Hester goes to Chillingworth and pleads with him to stop adding to the minister's self-torment.He refuses.


Hester arranges to meet Dimmesdale in the forest to reveal her husband's identity.The two lovers and decide to flee to England where they can become a family.Hester removes the Scarlet letter and calls Pearl over to tell her of their plans.Pearl does not recognize her mother without the letter, and does not come to her mother until she puts the Letter back on.The day before they plan to leave, Dimmesdale gives an excellent speech to the townspeople.Meanwhile, Hester is told that Chillingworth has also requested to come aboard to England with them.Dimmesdale sees Hester and Pearl standing in front of the scaffold and pulls them up onto the scaffold with him.He confesses publicly that he is the father of Pearl and exposes the scarlet letter on his chest.He falls dead right after Pearl kisses him.


Chillingworth, frustrated in his revenge, dies a year later.Hester and Pearl disappear from the town.Many years later, Hester returns without Pearl and moves back into her cottage.It is come to believe that Pearl married a European and established a family of her own.When Hester dies, she is buried net to Dimmesdale, and the two share a gravestone which bears an "A."


SubplotThe subplot of the story is the description of Pearl's characteristics and her behavior as she grows up.


ConflictOne internal conflict that Hester faces is when she could not be free of the letter because her daughter would not recognize her without it.She suffered the rest of her life for the love of her daughter.Another internal conflict is when she is forced to swear to keep her husband's identity from the man she loves.An example of an external conflict was that Hester had to keep her Husband from hurting Dimmesdale.She struggled to keep her promise to him but in the end had to reveal his identity to warn Dimmesdale.


Rising Action/TensionThe rising action is that Dimmesdale stands silent watching Hester suffer for a sin that he helped to commit while his conscience nags at him and affects his health.Meanwhile, Chillingworth poses as Dimmesdale's physician but is actually testing his suspicions that Dimmesdale is Hester's lover which cuts into Dimmesdale's feelings of shame.


ClimaxThe climax of the story is when Dimmesdale sees the dull "A" in the night sky and realizes that he must reveal his secret to the public.Another climax is at the end when Dimmesdale admits his sin.

Pearl is a living symbol of her mother's Scarlet Letter.


IronyOne ironic occurrence in the story was that Dimmesdale,who gave Hester a long lecture as to why she should turn in the other sinner, turns out to be the other sinner, and what is more ironic is that he refuses to reveal his sin to the public after telling Hester why it would be the right thing to do.

The Romanticism was part of a period of profound social changes. The French and Industrial Revolutions gave the romantic poets a chance to see a huge transformation of the Occidental world from an agricultural society into an industrialized one. The publication of the Lyrical Ballads in 178, written by Wordsworth and Coleridge is considered the official beginning of the Romanticism and that end around 180. Or if the secret ministry of frost


Shall hang them up in silent icicles,


Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.


The presence of nature is evident since the title of this poem ("Sea, hill, and wood"), as Bostetter claims, uses the "nature imagery very deliberately as sign and symbol of abstract ideas" (P. 86). It is a windless night and the speaker is alone, he is just with a baby by his side ("a cradled infant", "dear babe, the spleptest cradled by my side"), like Wordsworth it is normal to find in Coleridge's poetry the image of children. At time same time he talks to the baby ("But thou, my babe !/ shalt wander like a breeze"), he celebrates the nature, affirming that all seasons are going to be sweet to his child ("all seasons shall be sweet to thee").


Therefore, the poem clearly shows a main characteristic of this poet showing the relation of children and nature. Nevertheless, different from Wordsworth, Coleridge contrasts the natural setting with the city, maybe because he grew up in London, he believes that he could not feel the extraordinary connection between childhood and nature, so, he indicates the fragility of the child's innocence. The religious connotation is another Romantic characteristic ("Of that eternal language, which thy God/ Utters, who from eternity doth teach").


Kubla Khan is another example of Coleridge's work. The first three stanzas make us realize how imaginative the poet was, he says that he wrote this poem after a fantastic vision he had when he was sleeping, it was probably an opium dream, once the poet was an opium addict. It is a musical poem written through the use of the iambic tetrameter with different rhyme schemes. It is a fantastic story full of magic and imagery that shows the poet's interest for bizarre tales, which may represent a certain influence by the gothic tradition. This is one more difference between him and Wordsworth that prefer rustic, simple places.

A savage place ! as holy and enchanted


As eer beneath a waning moon was haunted


By woman wailing for her demon-lover !

As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,


A mighty fountain momently was forced


Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst


Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,

While in Frost at midnight he uses the silence, it is a very quiet poem, in Kubla Khan, he has a very excited state of mind, in this case the source of his poetry is the emotion find within the emotion. The use of unconscious and miraculous dream makes Coleridge the poet of imagination. According to Bostetter,"The immense, fantastic schemes he constantly and effortlessly projected are almost too numerous to mention" (P. 8) the use of supernatural world is thus evident, the poet wanted the freedom of the imaginative.


Nevertheless, Coleridge also uses the nature in this poem ("Down to a sunless sea", "It flung up momently the sacred river") which is also responsible for the supernatural atmosphere of the text. Further, the music is also present ("Her symphony and song") as we are going to see in Wordsworth's poetry.


Wordsworth, just as Coleridge, shows the idealization of nature, he grew up in a simple society and learned to appreciate nature, that is why it is easily found in his poetry scenes of rural life and poor people. As Bostetter says, Wordsworth has a "sense of the gravitational bond between man and nature. The interaction man and nature was to him not merely an intellectual and abstract concept but something seriously apprehended, physically experienced" (P. 14).


He also uses a simple language, denying the rules imposed by the Classicism, further, one frequent theme is the childhood, which he considered a very important period of life, however, as children get older they are influenced by the world experiences and lose their innocence. Usually his meter is regular providing a musical melody to his verse; he mainly emphasizes on the feeling and its simplicity, his normal natural scenery is sometimes connected to religious symbols.


According to him, in the preface of Lyrical Ballads, which was more his own project than Coleridge's, "the poet binds together by passion and knowledge the vast empire of human society, as it is spread over the whole earth and over all time". Moreover, this preface shows that, in general, his poetry was based on actions of common life, he always tried to use the language used by men, considering poetry a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings". Therefore, it is possible to say that while Coleridge was focused on the importance of the poet's imagination, Wordsworth preferred to focus on natural and everyday situations.


The Solitary Reaper is a famous poem wrote after the Lyrical Ballads. As describe above, Wordsworth used a simple situation in which he show a rustic girl singing in a natural scenerya field; the language is also simple, the meter is regular, he uses the iambic tetrameter following a rhyme scheme (ABABCCDD), which brings to his poetry a musical melody. This regular meter regulates the excessive emotions, and also elevates the simple language style, it makes the poem much more plausible.


The Solitary Reaper


BEHOLD her, single in the field,


Yon solitary Highland Lass!


Reaping and singing by herself;


Stop here, or gently pass!


Alone she cuts and binds the grain,


And sings a melancholy strain;


O listen! for the Vale profound


Is overflowing with the sound.


No Nightingale did ever chaunt


More welcome notes to weary bands


Of travellers in some shady haunt,


Among Arabian sands


A voice so thrilling neer was heard


In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,


Breaking the silence of the seas


Among the farthest Hebrides.


Will no one tell me what she sings?


Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow


For old, unhappy, far-off things,


And battles long ago


Or is it some more humble lay


Familiar matter of to-day?


Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,


That has been, and may be again?


Whateer the theme, the Maiden sang


As if her song could have no ending;


I saw her singing at her work,


And oer the sickle bending;


I listend, motionless and still;


And, as I mounted up the hill,


The music in my heart I bore,


Long after it was heard no more.


As the child reaps ("Alone she cuts and binds the grain,"), she sings ("And sings a melancholy strain") the poet wants to discover what her song is about, he cannot understand it (Will no one tell me what she sings?), even so, he likes it, he sees beauty in it, thinks it is about "old, unhappy, far-off things", about "matter of today" that shows Wordsworth's focus on everyday activities. Again, like in Frost at midnight the aloneness theme is used. After the speaker passes the girl, the music continues with him. In fact, the poet was able to find what he calls "the human music" within the nature. Wordsworth also privileged the memory, the final two lines show the effect memories have over human thoughts.


Like Coleridge, according to Bostetter, Wordsworth sees in childhood something of the base "on which man's 'greatness stands'", further, he was concerned with "the interaction of mind and nature". (P. 1) To Cevasco and Siqueira, Wordsworth saw God in each element of nature, the celebration of it, would teach man moral lessons and bring his lost happiness back, as he says in the Preface of Lyrical Ballads, differently from Coleridge, the emotion in poetry should be "recollected in poetry", as said before Coleridge recollected it inside the emotion itself.


A second example of Wordsworth poetry is London, 180 on which he speaks with the dead poet John Milton, it is a sonnet written in iambic pentameter. The speaker is crying Milton's soul, the very beginning shows his cry "Milton!", he wants Milton to return to Earth saying that this poet was able to correct England (it shows a nationalist character). Unlike many Romantic sensualists, such as Keats, Wordsworth was worried about the morality, therefore this sonnet that present an angry tone, shows this side of the poet emphasizing on feelings and wanting a more social perspective to the Romantic poetry.


The use of London shows the historical context once this place was suffering huge changes due to the Industrial Revolution.

Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour;


England hath need of thee she is a fen


Of stagnant waters altar, sword, and pen,


Fireside, the heroic wealth of hall and bower,


Have forfeited their ancient English dower


Of inward happiness. We are selfish men;


Oh! raise us up, return to us again;


And give us manners, virtue, freedom, power.


Thy soul was like a Star, and dwelt apart;


Thou hadst a voice whose sound was like the sea


Pure as the naked heavens, majestic, free,


So didst thou travel on lifes common way,


In cheerful godliness; and yet thy heart


The lowliest duties on herself did lay.


Keats is part of the second generation of Romantic poets, as most of Romantic poets, he prefers emotion than reason, he focuses on imagination and is against the Classic rules. "Keats was to a degree influenced by the first-generation Romantics, particularly Wordsworth. He admired what he saw as Wordsworth's ability to incorporate the miseries of the world into a transcendent vision, but was often wary of what he called Wordsworth's 'egotistical sublime'. For Keats, the poet's function was not to impose a vision or interpretation upon the world, as he thought Wordsworth did, but rather to immerse and lose the self in what was perceived". Cevasco and Siqueira show that Keats' work is based on his happiness and on his love. Besides, he has elegant verses and is widely influenced by a sensual perspective, although some authors affirm that Coleridge had also sexual ambiguities, Keats is the most famous Romantic poet that uses them.


Keats also has some dream poems like Coleridge's Kubla Khan, furthermore, he also uses a common language, admiring the simplicity. Keats has great imaginative qualities, very little was enough for him to create poetry, in his source it is possible to find the emotion and imagination focusing on the beauty of natural world. However, unlike other Romantic poets, he uses widely implicit sexual allusions, the "mellow fruitfulness," "ripeness to the core" and "clammy cells" involve a sensorial atmosphere showing a certain sexual desire.


Wordsworth wrote some poetic theory, although Keats did not do that, he wrote informally the ideas that made his mind frenzied, the imagination and the poet's identity (the individual self) are some of them. In To Autumn Keats addresses directly the autumn, just like Wordsworth's Solitary Reaper, Keats, uses a rural scenery, more specifically a field, there he personalizes the autumn as a reaper. The nature is represented through concrete images, such as "To bend with apples the mossd cottage-trees", "And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core".Thus it is possible to notice a resemblance between Wordsworth and Keats since both of them use the image of a reaper girl working in the field, both are also connected with music ("Where are the songs of Spring? /Ay, where are they?/Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,--). The seasons in this poem can be applied to the mind and life of man, as nature, life starts, decays and reaches the death, it is a full cycle like the natural seasons. By personalizing the autumn Keats expresses fully his imagination, jus as Coleridge did.


To Autumn


Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,


Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;


Conspiring with him how to load and bless


With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;


To bend with apples the mossd cottage-trees,


And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;


To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells


With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,


And still more, later flowers for the bees,


Until they think warm days will never cease,


For Summer has oer-brimmd their clammy cells.


Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?


Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find


Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,


Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;


Or on a half-reapd furrow sound asleep,


Drowsd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook


Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers


And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep


Steady thy laden head across a brook;


Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,


Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.


Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?


Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,--


While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,


And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;


Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn


Among the river sallows, borne aloft


Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;


And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;


Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft


The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;


And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.


Repeating Romantic characteristics, Keats' poem is written in blank verse, against the Classicism, it has various rhyme schemes, and uses regularly the iambic pentameter. The language used is quite simple as well as its theme.


Ode to Melancholy also appropriates these ideas. There is use off a concrete imagery where the poet shows that joy and pain are dialectic, it means that they are inseparable, to reach the joy is necessary to experience the melancholy. As well as To Autumn there are three stanzas with different kinds of rhymes, and using the iambic pentameter. While all Keats's odes are written in the first person, this ode is not; it is constructed with the imperative form, which gives the impression that the poet is showing his own experiences. Through the exploration of nature it is possible to realize Keats's implicit sexual connotations, he shows that pleasure and pain are linked.


"The literary critic Jack Stillinger describes the typical movement of the romantic ode The poet, unhappy with the real world, escapes or attempts to escape into the ideal. Disappointed in his mental flight, he returns to the real world. Usually he returns because human beings cannot live in the ideal or because he has not found what he was seeking. But the experience changes his understanding of his situation, of the world, etc.; his views/feelings at the end of the poem differ significantly from those he held at the beginning of the poem."


Ode on Melancholy


No, no, go not to Lethe, neither twist


Wolfs-bane, tight-rooted, for its poisonous wine;


Nor suffer thy pale forehead to be kissd


By nightshade, ruby grape of Proserpine;


Make not your rosary of yew-berries,


Nor let the beetle, nor the death-moth be


Your mournful Psyche, nor the downy owl


A partner in your sorrows mysteries;


For shade to shade will come too drowsily,


And drown the wakeful anguish of the soul.


But when the melancholy fit shall fall


Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud,

Or on the rainbow of the salt sand-wave,


Or on the wealth of globed peonies;

And Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips


Bidding adieu; and aching Pleasure nigh,

Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue


Can burst Joys grape against his palate fine;


His soul shalt taste the sadness of her might,


And be among her cloudy trophies hung.


These three poets here discussed are examples of the importance Romanticism had to the literature. By the use of a popular poetic form, the Romantics were able to reach a great part of the population, although they differ in some aspects, they have clear similarities, for instance, they prefer the emotion instead of the reason, using the spontaneity and the nature. Moreover, the childhood is a usual theme, as well as the use of dialectic thought, once, as Blake said, "without contraries there is no progression".

Throughout time, people can fairly see that bad things happen to good people.Whether you are a preacher or a criminal you both have a good chance of something bad happening to you.In the mid 1700s you can clearly see that bad things happened to just about everyone that was living in that era.If you were a colonist living here in America you had it very hard, you always had a new law or tax brought onto you.The colonists would have to fight many battles, which brought many sufferings to families.With this in mind, is it possible that through all the hardships that people have, the things that came about happened for a reason, and the outcome could be a surprisingly great one.


In British America the colonists were heavily neglected by Britain.Britain did not think that the colonies were of much importance to their countries economic society.It wasn't until wars broke out that the English decided to help the colonists with the fighting.The British felt that if the French or Spanish wanted it bad enough there must be something behind the colonists that was of importance.After the battles were fought the British decided to place new tax laws on the colonists.The English figured that since they had to bail out the colonists that it was only fair that the colonists pay their fair share.


The colonists did not fight back much because they thought it was also fair.But, when the English started making tax laws for everything without the consent of the colonists, this made the colonists furious.Not only did the colonists lose family members and friends in the battles, now they had to pay taxes on just about everything to pay for the battles.With the troubles the colonists faced they tried to get through life, living the best they could.Many colonists had to give up their younger sons and daughters and hire them out because a lack of work and a lack of money.One of the most ridiculous tax laws that the British set forth was the Stamp Acts.The stamp act was just another way for the British to make money off the already poor colonists.


For the colonists to retaliate they had a meeting in New York and decided to boycott many of the British imports.Many colonists signed petitions saying they would not eat or drink British imports.The colonists knew this would work because half of the British exports came straight over to the Americas.With the colonists having to go through days and months without certain types of food they finally got the result they wanted.Many of the tax laws were taken away and life was as good as things could get.


With battles being fought on American soil the fighting was more intense and blood shattering.With many of the soldiers dieing in battle, the British won the French and Indian war, which eventually kicked France off the American continent.With this win the colonists were able to gain more land rights and were able to live without the French being a threat.Which was a huge win for the colonists.After the colonists had decided to move over the Appalachian Mountains to the west, the British signed a peace agreement with the Indians, which said that the colonists would not go west of the Appalachians.The colonists were furious because they had lost many lives and had the feeling of victory.Which was stolen right out from under their hands.With the angry colonists about many decided to not stop on their journey, but continue despite the British governments rule.


With angry colonists out and their attitudes being that they could conquer what ever stepped in their way, thought they would just defy Britain.Now with Britain being the superpower of this time, they thought the same thing and they knew there would be no problem with fighting the colonists.The British thought of America to be their child that was throwing a temper tantrum and that they would just have to scold them to keep them in line.With every move each group made, it brought them both closer to the revolution.With Britain now taking everything that the colonists had fought for away from them, the colonists were up for the fight.With the hardships the colonists had faced so far, you wouldn't imagine Britain would bring about another law.


The next law that was set forth was on tea.With the colonists drinking about two cups of tea a day.This would help Britain gain control and money over the colonists.The colonists did not want to go through having their economy go down because of another tax, so they went into the port of Boston where they went to a British ship that carried tea, and threw the tea boxes over the side.This made the British very angry.The colonists wanted to fight every person that supported the king and parliament.They showed this the night of the Boston massacre.The Boston massacre was a fight between a few red coats and 60 colonists.The red coats fired onto the crowd in the fear of being killed themselves.They injured eleven innocent victims.


With this entire happening, the revolution was just a step away.The British started to send troops to the Americas in the effort to beat the colonists at a war for independence.Many battles were fought, and the colonists defeated the odds of winning the war.The colonists won the revolutionary war by using different war tactics, which included doing anything necessary to hurt the British.The colonists won their independence and on July 4th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was official.


With all of these events that happened to the colonists, with all the adversity the colonists had to go through, in the end they got what they needed.The colonists went decades with being treated horribly and with the ups and downs the colonists beat the British in a war, which many said would be impossible to win.The colonists fought battles and tasted victory to only have it taken away.This can happen in life, but if you continue to persevere you can defeat the odds and taste the victory after all the hardship life may have put you through.This example of the colonists and Great Britain shows that good can come out of adversity.
