Discipline

I'll never forget, I was 7 years old and I wanted to stay to my Aunt Jolethia's house, but my mother and father told me no I had school the next day.And that I could come back tomorrow.I was not going for it. I kicked and screamed down the steps, up the sidewalk, and into the car. I made a big fuss. That night I don't know what came over me I was going to do anything to stay.So I decided to pull my mothers freshly done pineapple waves. We had a small compact two door car and some how my mother managed to body slam me in the car.All I remember was going up in the air and waking up the next morning in my bed. Ever since that fateful night my parents did not have to worry about discipline problems from me.But for the new generation discipline is a foreign word.

There are more out of control children today than ever before, due to not only lack of discipline, but also, parental involvement in the lives of their children. It is not enough to just discipline a child and not find out what is going on in that child's life.Parental involvement is as important as setting up rules and following through, by punishing the child when those rules are broken.Parents need to be aware of who his friends are, and are the friends the parents have met, those ones their kid is hanging out with?Be aware of who are the people that are influencing their child.Try to find out as best they can what is happening in their kids' life, any problems or pressures that might trouble a kid, and become problematic for either the child or the parent.

There are kids that do what they want to do because they know all their parents are going to do is yell at them a little bit, and that is it for their punishment. After yelling for a while, the parent feel like their job is done and things resume as if nothing happened. It does not matter what the child has done, some parents think that a good scolding will do the trick, and the child will change his malicious ways. For example, a kid decides to go out with his friends, and stays out really late, because they were having fun roaming the streets. To the kid, time does not matter; he will go home whenever he gets tired or he gets good and ready; he figures to heck with the curfew. He knows that the only repercussion he faces consists of getting yelled at.He'll say he is sorry and problem solved.

Some parents have a strict guideline that they enforce, but the child is out with other kids that get him involved with some type of wrong doing, and the parents have no idea what their child is up to.When the child does get caught doing something bad, they set a punishment and make sure it is enforced, but never bother to talk to their child, to find out why he did what he did, and whom he was with.As an example, an adolescent, we'll call him John, tells his parents that he is sleeping over at friends house, because they are going to rent some videos and just hangout. The parents agree after all, they run a tight ship and figure the kid knows the consequences. So John goes to his friends' house only to meet other friends there, and go drinking. In the middle of the night the doorbell rings, John's dad comes to the door; it's the police. Sir, do you have a son by the name of John, the officer asks?We pulled a kid over because he was obviously driving drunk. The driver, your son, along with two other juveniles, was completely inebriated; we will release John over to you. Both parents go through the roof, immediately they start yelling at the kid for quite a while, and send him to his room.In the morning, the scolding begins again. They ground him for a month, take away some privileges, and things return too normal. The parents never bother to find out who their child is hanging out with, who are his friends, or even meet with the parents of their-child's' friends, to make sure that he is in good company, and not hanging out with the wrong crowd, the type of crowd that will get him into trouble.Their only concern was to punish John.

Parental involvement is as crucial as is discipline in a child's life. Parents cannot discipline a child without finding out why the child is doing what he is doing, and whom he is doing it with.Parents have to be aware as best they can, what is going on in their child's life, to help them, reassure them when peer pressure might be getting a bit difficult to deal with.Parents involved in their child's life build a stronger bond making it easier for the child to talk to their parents when problems arise. But, just being involved in the child's life is not going to do the trick. The parents might have a good open relationship with their child, but the parents have to discipline the child when they do wrong, they can't set up the rules and not enforce them, because kids will do as they please when there are no repercussions for their actions.Discipline and parental involvement go hand in hand; discipline alone is not enough.

There is a myth in the sciences that science is "an objective enterprise done

properly only when scientists can shuck the constraints of their culture and view the world as it really is".Stephen Gould, in his book, "The Mismeasure of Man", demonstrates clearly the fallacy of "objective science". Scientists have been influencedby certain political, cultural, and social conditions of their era, and the data is manipulated to support their conclusions which may have been derived in a bias manner. The corollary of "The Mismeasure of Man" is to discuss how research affects social policy and that research is not purely an academic matter.

Gould supports his arguments against objective science by giving an historical background beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, of scientists coming up with various ways to quantify intelligence. The research was necessary to rationalize why certain groups should be ranked higher in society than others.Gould attacks specific individuals and schools of science throughout the past 150 years, and methods used in gathering data to support their theories. He argues that any research that is done to support the hereditarian school of intelligence is flawed, and the findings are the result of the political climate, and the convictions of the researchers.

There were several methods used by scientists in the nineteenth century to quantify intelligence.Crainometry , which is the study of the measure of skulls , was an early method that was used.Scientists, such as Paul Broka and Samuel Morton claimed that intelligence could be measured by brain size, and that whites on average were more intelligent than individuals of other cultures. After carefully reviewing the statistics of Help with essay on The Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen Jay Gould

Morton and Broka, Gould successfully refutes their conclusions. Gould also points out that Broka's data was selectively gathered and manipulated to support prior conclusions,

instead of objectively looking at the data and refuting the statistics. Slavery was coming to an end during this time period and science was used to justify the ranking of the lower class, as well as Women, Native Americans and Blacks.

As methods for intellectual discrimination became more sophisticated, biological determinism was born. Recapitulation served as a general theory ofbiological determinism. Recapitulation is the idea that higher creatures repeat the adult stages of lower animals during their own growth. All "inferior" groups-races, sexes, and classes were compared to the children of white males. According to Gould, E.D. Cope, a paleontologist, identified four groups of lower human forms on this criterion nonwhite races, all women, southern as opposed to northern European whites, and lower classes within superior races. Cesare Lombroso and his colleagues claimed that physical characteristics were indicators of morality, meaning criminals can be identified through physical appearance. Gould refuted these claims of recapitulation, but did not use statistics. Gould used the arguments made by scientists of Lombroso's time, his own rhetoric, and plain common sense. Gould disclaims that appearance is a reflection of reality. In Gould's book, there are examples of photos that had been doctored in order to substantiate the recapitulation theory.

In the twentieth century the Binet Scale was widely supported in determiningintelligence. Binet was commissioned by the minister of public education in 104, to develop techniques for identifying those children whose lack of success in normal classrooms suggested the need for some form of special education. German psychologist W. Stern made changes to the Binet Scale and the Intelligence Quotient was born. Binet had not intended for his series of tests to determine intelligence, but merely to single out those individuals in a normal classroom setting that were having severe problems. The error Gould points out is that no single factor or score can reflect true intelligence. Gould

repeatedly condemns priori assumptions by Goddard, Terman, Yerkes, Spearman, and Burt. They use circular reasoning which assumes a single dimension of intelligence and they are able to obtain scores and rankings of that dimension to validate their theories. The fallacy is that their techniques were specifically designed or chosen to return a single dimension of intelligence. The assumption that such a score is the result of heredity is an even more disturbing error in reasoning. The only reason the tests were used in this way was to support the ranking of classes, races, and sexes and substantiate that ranking with erroneous statistics to reflect the white European's superiority.

Cy Reynolds English 1H

John Keats was born on October 1, 175.He was the oldest of five siblings. One of them, Edward died at infancy. He lived a happy childhood in North London. His father Thomas Keats and his mother Frances Jennings owned a livery business called the "Swan and Hoop".John was a very unique boy.He would answer people by rhyming the last word of his answer to the last word to their question.John really enjoyed doing this, which paid off later in his life.Keats loved his mother very much and was very protective of her.Keat's family wasn't rich but they were well off. When Keats wasyears old, his father fell off his horse on the way home and died several hours later.Jennings misery didn't last long and she soon married a minor bank clerk named William Rawlings.Rawlings only wanted money and they broke up shortly after. After this, John's mother disappeared. This caused Keats to lose his respect and hope for his mother.

During this time, the Keats children were sent to their grandparents John and Alice Jennings in Enfield. At Enfield he had a great teacher named John Clarke.Clarke went past the curriculum and as a result, Keats had a good education.John Keats and his siblings were quite popular at school also.John was known as a fighter and was very courageous and aggressive but also sensitive. He did not fit the stereotype for a future poet and at that time people were thought to be born poets and not made into one.John Jennings died in March 1805 and their financial situation began to plummet.John Jennings had been a loving man but he was also gullible enough to hire a land surveyor instead of a lawyer to draft his will.As a result, the will wasn't very specific. The rest of Keats life became a struggle for money. His mother soon turned up sick and tired.Keats whole attitude changed and he focused primarily on pleasing his mother and making her proud. He read all the time and studied very hard.He was awarded the school prize for best literary work of that year.Around this time, Keats had read almost every single book in his school's library. His mother became very proud in him indeed. However, she soon died from tuberculosis when John was 14.His grandmother granted Richard Abbey as the guardian of the children. It was a terrible decision and because of the vague will, Abbey often deliberately withheld the children's money. He was unsympathetic to the children and once referred to one of Keats' poems as, "a horse that you cannot catch and isn't any good once you catch it."

John Keats wrote his first poem at 1 years old just before his grandmother died.Keats wanted to be a poet but he knew that poetry is a privilege to the wealthy who do not have to work and can afford to indulge in word play. This was a very hard decision for Keats and to make it even worse, Abbey withdrew John and one of his brothers George from school and apprenticed John as an apothecary.John was part of the beginning of the Romantic period of poetry.Technique and common sense was in the past prized higher than inspiration and passion.Romantic poets began to spring up but their works were still disliked and thus it was very hard to make a decent living. There was also another popular form of poetry that tried to be romantic by glorifying things that weren't so great.Keats took his work after a minor poet named Leigh Hunt whom he admired.Cowden Clark, a friend of John Keats, had read some of Keats' work and was impressed by it.He then took some of John's poems that he owned and brought them to a friend of his, who just happened to be Leigh Hunt.Hunt loved it and immediately asked Clark to bring him over to meet with Keats.Hunt and Keats became friends and Hunt would later prove very influential to Keats' writing, for Hunt became a devoted critic.

John Keats then decided to end his medical career. He also had a friend name Benjamin Bailey with whom he went to stay at Oxford.Bailey was very well off and Keats enjoyed his stay. The campus was a quiet and peaceful place, where he could write poems and then take long walks with Bailey, discussing his works.Bailey was deep into studying theology and often had religious talks with Keats. Also, evidence shows that while at Oxford, Keats may have contracted a venereal disease. He began to take mercury (which had many terrible side effects) to try and cure it.Later, Keats regretfully moved back to London with his two brothers George and Tom.Tom then became very ill and soon died of tuberculosis.George met a woman and planned to marry her in America.John was lonely and all the rest of his family was gone.John Keats' and his neighbor Fanny Brawne fell deeply in love and got engaged in 181.However, the previous year on a trip to Scotland, signs of sickness started growing in Keats. They then moved to Italy, in September 180 while still keeping secretly engaged. In February 181, John Keats died peacefully in Rome of tuberculosis.

John Keats' poem 'Robin Hood', was actually a letter to his friend John H. Reynolds. It's a sad and melancholy poem comparing the days of Robin Hood and his band of outlaws to the days Keats lived in.Legend says that Robin Hood was an outlaw and a thief who stole from the wealthy. But to the villagers and peasants, he was a hero.Keats expresses how Robin Hood is almost like a hero to him also because of his lack of money throughout his entire life.Keats goes into telling about the medieval times and how honorable they were.He then talks about how if Robin and his crew were alive now, they would despair for things had drastically changed since their times. It sorrowfully explains how Robin would find all of his oaks cut down and used for industrial purposes. The industrial revolution was also going on during Keats' life. Keats describes how the poor have no choice but to live a terrible life whereas in the middle ages you could grow things for yourself and live in the peaceful forest with Robin and his band.

In the poem, Keats shows skill at rhyming every line.He got a lot of practice during his childhood where he would rhyme his answer with the question anybody asked him.Keats is also a very descriptive writer and he uses metaphors in the line, "Of the forest's whispering fleeces," and in, "Many times have winter's shears,".They describe how the leaves on a tree form a coat and the sound of the wind going through that coat. The other describes how winter "shears" away plants and life like a shepherd cutting wool. When winter comes, all the green is drawn away to leave white and brown.

The rd stanza refers to the polar ray as the North Star.It says that you can look forever (using the North as a guide) and you will never find Robin Hood or anybody else like him anymore. Those days are gone now.Keats was a very educated person and he uses a couple references to medieval mythology. It mentions, "Gamelyn" who was a hero in a fourteenth century outlaw tale.Keats wouldn't have known so much if it weren't for his love of reading. At the end of the poem, Keats honors the times and people of Robin Hood's days.He then states "Though their days have hurried by, let us two a burden try."This means that even though that time period has gone by quickly, let Keats and the reader try as much as possible to bring back that kind of honor and merriment.

The poem 'On Death', is one of Keats' shortest and most meaningful poems. It asks that what if death is really sleep and life is just a dream. The great times of our lives may just be imaginary like a phantom. We think that it is painful to die, but what if it is just the end of a dream.Keats shows how we all live great our lives while poisoning them with our immense fear of death. But would it be so terrible still, if you were only waking up?

Keats uses a great simile in the line, "And scenes of bliss pass as a phantom by,".It refers to the beautiful things in our life that we value so greatly as a phantom or ghost.Phantoms cannot be touched or moved, they are only images. What if the people that you see around you are not really there and you are really just imagining them while you sleep in reality.

The idea that Keats is conveying is probably something that he truly believed in.This theory reassured Keats when most of his family died while he was still very young. When his father died when Keats was onlyyears old, he was only able to cope with the shock by imagining that his father was not in pain and was only waking up from a dream.Any death or tragedy that came to Keats, he could just deal with it like a bad dream and it will be over eventually.Keats was so aggressive and known to be a "fighter" because he wasn't afraid to die.He would welcome death if it came.Keats did not feel like there was no greater pain than to die.He thought life continued on and got better. The Author also advise people not to be so afraid and says that we lead a life of sorrow and pain when the people we love die and when we become ill or close to death ourselves. We should instead be happy for them and go on with our lives and try to live up to their standards.

'How many bards gild the lapses of time!' was one of Keats' earlier poems and one of Leigh Hunt's favorites.Keats often, in his works, refers to poets as bards. The title and the first sentence say that there are so many poets that glorify the passing of time and the many intertwined events that take place.Keats states how, out of all of these poets, he only likes a few of them.He can get lost in the beauty of the poems. However, Keats states that when he sits down to write, he listens to what is going around him and sees the simplicity and beauty in the sounds of nature. These things do not bother him or hinder him from writing, they aid it.Keats likes to write about surroundings in which people live in and delve deeper into the simple things while other poets tell about events and comparisons of time periods.

Keats not only uses imagery in this, but he also talks about how he uses it in many other of his works.Keats really likes to use the images and sounds of nature in many of his poems. He creates wonderful mental images of the beauty of nature.Keats uses these for example in "The songs of birds- the whisp'ring of the leaves, The voice of waters-the great bell that heaves,".The Author also sometimes uses personification to better describe the actions of nature. He uses it in, "the whisp'ring of the leaves".That adds so much feeling to the descriptive, and the sound and image that you create becomes more dramatic.

Keats wonderful technique is very unique. As a kid he was known to be a sensitive person.Keats didn't follow the obvious and sought further meaning into things around him.Keats listened to sounds a different way than everyone else did.He heard music instead of noise.Being a romantic poet, Keats loved and honored the olden days. But also being born during a time of great industrialism, harmony and nature were not paid much attention to.Some of the most enjoyable times were spent during Keats' stay at Oxford with his friend Bailey. It was very quiet there even indoors. There, Keats could concentrate on his poems without disturbance yet also watch and listen to the peaceful things around him.Eventually Keats left Oxford and moved back to London where he hated it because it was very cramped and noisy.John became truly grateful of nature and peace.

'To Autumn' was one of Keats' last poems. It has a deep feeling of serenity, freshness and abundance.Yet at the same time it shows decaying and the passing of something.Autumn is the time of harvesting and is also when there is the "most food on the table".The glee and happiness is clearly shown in the tone of the poem. The Author describes also how Autumn is passing of summer and green life and the bringing of a dark cold winter.Autumn takes the summer's warmth and rips down the leaves.

Keats wonderfully intertwines lots of imagery and tone in each stanza. The first stanza demonstrates how plentiful and fruity the beginning of autumn is.Imagery is used well in this stanza, especially in "And fill all fruits with ripeness to the core, To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells."Then, in the second stanza, the tone changes slightly to a period of excess food and a great store of food in the granary.Keats also mentions a girl and how she watches a cider-press squeezing out the last of the juice. The tone dramatically changes in the third stanza. It becomes almost like a call of someone not wanting summer to leave and fearing the winter. That person notices the dark change and knows what follows it.Imagery is used to describe the birds that flock to fly south of the coming cold and the shortening of the days.

The idea that John Keats was trying to portray was that everything dark has a purpose.Spring wouldn't be that invigorating if hadn't seen winter for a while.Would we really appreciate light if we had never seen dark?Life wouldn't be nearly as treasured if we never knew what death was.Dark things make people very grateful for the good things that they had.Keats really understood this and secretly summarized his life in this poem.Keats lost many of his family and friends. As a result, no mater what situation that Keats was in he was still glad to be alive.Keats was very grateful of the luxuries he had during his stay at Oxford, unlike most other people there, because he had witnessed poverty. The wealthy aren't truly grateful unless they have been poor for a while.

'Ode to Apollo' displayed Keats' great respect for many well-known poets.Apollo is the god of the arts including poetry and music. There is also a lot of history involved in 'Ode to Apollo'.Keats had a very good education as a child and was thirsty for knowledge.Keats knew a lot about Greek mythology and culture thus giving the poem a very ancient feeling tone. The author once again refers to poets as bards throughout the literary work.

In the line "whose chords are solid rays, and twinkle radiant fires," a metaphor describes Apollo's harp as having strings made of the suns rays.Keats also uses stanzas to individually describe seven poets. The poets are Apollo, Homer, Maro, Milton, Shakespeare, Spenser, and Tasso. All of these poets were highly admired by Keats.Irony is used when Keats describes Homer in "Looks through renovated eyes".This is situational irony because Homer was blind.

The last stanza separates itself from the rest of the poem.In it, Keats states that the bards mentioned in the poem all had lineage with Apollo. This clearly shows that Keats highly admired these poets. When Keats read most of the books in the entire library of his school, he probably did the best thing he ever did to aid his career. He shows advanced knowledge of Apollo and the other poets in 'Ode to Apollo'.These poets' style often appears in many of John Keats' poems. When Keats liked what he saw he adapted some of their technique.

John's life was full of many hardships and difficulties that would be almost impossible for anyone to normally bear. However, Keats was able to go on with his life and cage up his emotions. When he writes, Keats puts his entire mood into the work. Those emotions can be traced through the poem and they add true passion to his works.Using this style, Keats wrote some of the best literary works ever created.

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, is a story told from the eyes of the young Tom Sawyer. The story takes place in the small rustic town of St. Petersburg Missouri. Tom Sawyer is the main character of the book. Tom is an imaginative young man who always seems to be getting into trouble. Tom is very adventurous; he never passes up a chance to play pirates, robbers, or soldiers. This book has multiple themes but the most important is knowing when its right to talk and tell the truth and when its better to be quiet or lie. At the beginning of the story Tom is introduced by climbing in his window after a long night of cavorting with his friends. Soon after the start of the story Tom meets Huckleberry Fin. Huck is a local outcast of society who likes to live by his own terms. Tom and Huck become good friends. One night the two boys go to the graveyard. While they are there they witness the murder of the town doctor, Mr. Robinson. The boys watched as Injun Joe kills the doctor and frames a drunk by the name of Muff Potter who just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The boys swear never to speak of this again. Soon after this Tom falls in love with his new neighbor, Becky Thatcher. Eventually the two become engaged but the engagement falls through when Tom accidentally mentions his former love while talking with Becky. The two feud and do not speak. Meanwhile, the whole town is gossiping of the murder of Dr. Robinson and the prosecution of Muff Potter. A trail quickly forms and Muff is put on the stand. Tom knows he cannot let the innocent Muff go to jail so as the trial comes to a close Tom testifies, proving Injun Joe guilty. This is the climax of the story. After the trial ends, the manhunt for Injun Joe begins. Tom is treated like a hero, but feels bad knowing that he broke Huck's oath. Becky and Tom soon become friends again after Tom takes Becky's punishment at school for being careless with the teacher's things. Becky finds Tom to be very noble. Summer is coming near. Injun Joe is still at large and Tom and Huck are searching for treasure. While searching near an old ghost house one night the two boys over hear Injun Joe talking about some loot that he hid. The boys are determined to find it. As an end of the year celebration, Tom's whole class goes on a picnic and on a cave exploration near the wood outside of town. While in the caves Tom and Becky get lost. The whole town searches for them but they are not found. Also in the caves Tom sees Injun Joe snooping around. This inspires him to find a way out, which he does. After Tom and Becky are home the caves are sealed, leaving Injun Joe and his treasure locked inside. Injun Joe dies of starvation at the gated entrance of the cave and his treasure is discovered buy Tom and Huck who had found a secret way into the cave. The boys become the richest men in town. Huck decides to break away from the outcast life and moves in with a respectable widow in town. Tom and Huck are happy and rich and they promise to always stay together. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer. Tom is an imaginative young man. Whenever Tom plays he pretends to be a pirate or Robin Hood and his friends would be his merry men. "Just here the blast of a toy tin trumpet came faintly Tom flung off his shirt using it as a belt sticking in it a rude bow and arrow and a wooden sword. "Hold on me merry men! Keep hid till I blow." Tom is also very adventurous and loves to go hunting for treasure with Huck. "There comes a time in every rightly constructed boy's life when he has a ragging desire to go somewhere and dig for buried treasure." This feeling suddenly came upon Tom one day. Tom got Huck and they then went to search for treasure by the old abandoned ghost house. Tom often uses his creative imagination to get out of punishment from his Aunt Polly. Tom could make up lies like nobody else. He was very slick. Tom would use his adventures to escape the havoc of daily life. When Tom had a hard day at school or a problem with Sid, he would go on a treasure hunt, or go play Robin Hood in the woods. This book is known to have multiple themes but I tried to connect all of them into one. The presence of truth is the cornerstone of my theme. I believe it can best be summed up by a quote from Alexander Jablokov. "The road to truth is long, and lined the whole way with annoying bastards." Tom has many important decisions to make throughout the book. It is his truth that saves the life of Muff Potter during his trial and actually his lie that saves Becky Thatcher from being whipped. Tom is made out to be this wild conniving little cheater at the beginning of the book, but as the story proceeds Tom begins to mature, tell the truth, show signs of nobility and charisma, and not be such a naughty little boy. Tom goes from boy to man in this book. His view of the importance of truth changes and he understands that in order to do what is right it wont be easy and that there may be some hardships along the way.

Comparing and Contrasting Two Magazine Advertisements

In today's world, adverts have a great deal of influence over what we buy and do. Nearly everywhere we go some type of advert bombards us. For example, there are adverts on buses, on television, in magazines and on the street.

Within this essay I am going to compare and contrast an advert for Organics Shampoo and an advert for Shiseido The Makeup.

An advertiser needs to be very aware of the type of person that they are aiming to sell their product to. They also need to consider what is likely to motivate that person to buy their product. This is so that they can create the right image for their product and can persuade people to buy it. Advertisers have to create a strong image for their product, this means that they will link it in a customers mind with the type of person that they think they are or, more to the point, that they would like to be. The image that an advertiser creates depends on which group they are aiming to sell to.Both of my adverts are largely aimed at relatively young women as all of the images are portraying women in some sort of way and both of the adverts were found in the genre of women's magazines. The Organics advert also reflects social trends and even plays on stereotypes to add humour.

Advertisements directed at people often use humour as part of their appeal. The most important things to remember are what image are the advertisers trying to create (this tells you lots about who they think will buy their product and the associations they wish to create); and what motive do they give you for buying. Making certain aspects of the advert stand out helps make a point. Within the Shiseido advert the image of the woman takes up practically the whole of the A4 sheet. The image of the makeup however, takes up very little room in the advert. The appearance of the woman is important tanned, smiling and generally good looking, whilst empowered appearing in the unusual way she portrayed through the use of makeup. This promotes the idea that she is living a good life and since she is holding the product she is associated with it to the extent that the product is seen to be, in part, the source of her good fortune. The way, in which this is just selling the lifestyle rather than the product is very effective, much is left unanswered about the product but the audience may have already been persuaded. This again relates to social trends, as beauty has always been a key factor of persuasion.

Other things that advertisers use to sell their products are things like slogans (a catchy and memorable phrase about their product).

My Organics advert fails to include one but in my opinion the product need not have one because it takes the place of the slogan up with more humour and the product name, "Organics" is already well known. The Shiseido advert uses a slogan within it's advertisement because it doesn't really have much else to offer, this is mainly because it is restricted to only using some methods because of the image of their company. The slogan is "Dare to be Brilliant", this can be seen as a sort of question to the reader so it involves her.The slogan can also be commanding the reader to do what it says, "dare to be brilliant", giving the reader an imperative command.

Advertisers use colour very cleverly in adverts to create an overall atmosphere and successfully set the scene for their product. Within the Organics advert the main colour used is green, but it is shown in different shades. The young lady with the big green hair stands out from the rest of the images within the advert because the colour of the hair is very dark, emphasising the importance of the hair. After all the entire advert is about the Organics shampoo. The background of most of the advert is a light shade of green to give the focal point, the image full focus from the reader's perspective. The colour of the sofa the two ladies are sat on is pink, this sort of blends into the background, probably because it is not really of any importance to the advert.

The colour glossy nature of the Shiseido advert makes it seem glamorous and exciting as well as expensive, which adds a sense of extra value to the product being advertised. On a graphological level the layout is very bright.

The words within the copy echo the same sort of thoughts from the image.

Within the Organics advert there is a small box with the text, "it seemed her hair may be compensating for something" then there is an image portraying the text effectively as it includes a picture of a large breasted woman sat next to a rather "flat" one. This means that the big hair is "compensating" for her "flat" chest. The text adds to the humour of the advert, the advert being a type of cartoon also successfully does so.The text also again plays with social trends, as a lot of women have small problems, in this case the size of her bust but they try to cover it up with the use of something positively different to attract the male to, in this case her 'large' hair.

Within adverts extra information is given to the reader using a copy. The copy at the bottom of the Organics A4 page has a white background, this slightly excludes it from the rest of the advert background but also relates to the white used before within the image.Within this white box there is also the appearance of a recognisable logo, which further adds confidence in the product and the company producing it.Organics is very well known for its hair products so it doesn't need to give much of an explanation for itself. "Organics" is written in dark green, emphasising the importance to the reader of it being organically made. This advert is actually only one of a run of adverts for Organics, the copy displays this one being "Essential Truth #7".Then the copy goes on trying to relate to the reader, and trying to reinforce the effect by the content of the text by persuading her to believe that others, women are in the same situation. For example the content includes words like "We all" meaning women, this produces a collaborative desire for the same thing. The copy has been written in a quite casual form making the reader feel as though they are being given this information through an expert friend.Again the content is seen to be of amusement to the reader, but also a bit of reassurance to product as it gives extra information like, "five essential oils".

Within the Shiseido advert the product name is emboldened and in a different font type, this helps it to stand out even more from the other copy on the page so that the audience are aware of what they are looking at.

After the questioning whilst commanding slogan towards the bottom of the A4 page, the copy begins and sort of answers the question for you and points you in the right direction by giving you extra information on how to contact the company, as a phone number is presented.Again the words used within this advert begin to command again, "Ignite your true colours with makeup…".The copy stating, "Advanced Luminous Technology" sounds as though the company is trusting and worthy of you.The word "Advanced…Technology" sounds quite modern and gives a modern image of the company. The copy also offers the reader a "free complimentary" sample of lip-gloss, this involves the reader further and tempts them to take the offer up.This may lead to the further purchasing of products.

In conclusion I've found out that the use of adverts to sell products are so effective because they play on your subconscious image of how you see yourself, and tap into an aspect of the audience's lifestyle. They do this by varying their adverts depending on what type of audience will see it, and what type of product they are selling. As long as there is competition to be the best there will always be adverts, and no matter what people think of them, they are here to stay.

From self-assessing my personal characteristics, several of my strengths are evident.I consider myself a person who is charming and sociably polite. It has never been a problem for me, making and keeping close ties with people of a similar background as mine, but that is not to say, that I am not also willing to meet people from different upbringings.I feel that in order to receive from any relationship, you must always be willing to give what you are yearning to receive. It has always been a priority to me to be there for anyone in times of need, giving words of encouragement, and letting that person know that his or her problems are my problems, too, and that no matter how difficult a situation may seem there is always hope.

At my workplace, I see myself as a mentor to some of our new associates.I offer them advice, and I begin building their trust by teaching them how to perform their job in the best and most efficient manner.Even though I am in a management position, I never let this come between us.I make them feel that we are part of a team and as equally important.I think that if you treat associates with the respect and dignity that they deserve, you will obtain better results, and ultimately a winning performance.

In my current profession, I strive to perform to the best of my ability and in the best interests of the organization that I am currently employed in.For me, there is always the need to be motivated and to work consistently and enthusiastically. As a manager, perhaps my most important task is to motivate my employees.Motivation is the fuel that feeds employee productivity. Without it, nothing gets done accurately or on time.Recognition and appreciation are key factors in motivating my employees.

Another one of my strengths which has allowed me to expand my knowledge is that I have always been attracted to complexity and novelty.I want to learn new and exciting things, and I am never afraid to fail once, twice, and even three times.Failure drives me to persevere. After reaching success, I am filled with a feeling of complete satisfaction.I love to share my experiences of failure and success with others so that I can serve as an inspiration to others.

During my upbringing, I recall that my parents always encouraged me to succeed in life. They did this by telling me that I should always be aware of my creativeness and begin building a plan for the future.Success was a word that they seemed to always mention whenever they would sit down to offer their advice to me.With time, I began to focus on my personality characteristics that would guarantee me success in all of my endeavors.

In my personal life, I truly consider myself a trustworthy individual.I keep my promises, and I am a person of my word. I am also very reliable. I follow through on commitments. I keep secrets, and I never betray the confidence or trust that another person offers to me.I am loyal when loyalty is appropriate.I was taught that trustworthy people keep their promises, are honest, reliable, and should never inappropriately betray a confidence.

In my own personal assessment, I would be the first to accept my weaknesses. One of these weaknesses is that I am a perfectionist in everything I do.I spend an excessive amount in planning, and I am very hard to please. I think that anything you do is always a reflection of you, and so I always want to have everything done just perfect.I am always setting high standards for me.Many people would say that this is probably a strength and not a weakness, but from my personal experience, when I have, in many occasions, attempted to impose this on others, only to find out that I could never make anyone like me.I have seen that I cannot change other people's way of thinking. This has sometimes lead people to have some resentment towards me.

Another one of my weaknesses is melancholy.I tend to always want to remember the negative experiences in my life, and many times, I become moody and depressed. It almost seems that I enjoy being hurt. This has led me to hold back affections, and be suspicious of people.I am almost certain that I am probably depriving myself of accepting a good companion because I am not willing to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Conclusion

By evaluating both my strengths and weaknesses, I am determined to exercise my strengths and work diligently in strengthening my weaknesses.I believe God has created my strengths for me, for the purposes of making a difference in this world.I am confident that through prayer and with my true and sincere desire, he will help me produce great strength to overcome my weaknesses.I will take the time to remember that God does care for me, and will look at the promises He has given us.

The Survivor

Oblivious to the fact that I was nearing that time in your life when the thing last on your mind actually happens to occur, I sat back down in my seat and gazed out the window at the never ending, everlasting, deep blue, dazzling ocean. It was only when we approached the land of leaves ( The Amazon jungle) and the aircraft descended slightly that I realized that I now had a completely new perspective of the Amazon jungle. I could now see under the carpet of leaves and through the branches to a completely new world, creating self-indulgent, thought provoking and bizarre thoughts and ideas.

Suddenly my thoughts and ideas were demolished as the aircraft's left engine was engulfed by flames. The aircraft began to swoop into a dive, like an eagle diving towards its prey at an unthinkable speed. Putting on my parachute, I had but a few seconds to plan my escape and survive this chaotic, traumatic and life threatening situation.

I jumped. I was able to catch a glance at the cockpit only to see the pilot frantically trying to save the plane and the determination on his face indicated to me that he was not going to jump! I then had to under go the most pain striking image of the plane plummeting towards the ground, causing an explosion that would have definitely slaughtered the pilot. The eagle had landed!

Custom writing service can write essays on The Survivior

I glided into a tree and slowly gazed around me at the striking image of debris which lay before me. My first objective was to find the plane and retrieve anything that had fallen out of it or was still in one piece. It felt like hours before I eventually found the wreckage which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as it was not a pleasant sight. Noticing that the back end of the plane was still intact and not yet engulfed by flames, I bravely made my way towards the plane fighting the flames coming from the front. Death was beckoning, as I took one step at a time, remembering the consequences that lay in front of me. I managed to retrieve a medical kit and a survival kit in which was a hatchet, a little food, a couple of flares, a bottle of water and a radio transmitter. I tried the transmitter numerous times but with no success.

I started to make a shelter and then a sudden rush of guilt came to me because I did not encourage the pilot to jump but instead, being the pitiful looser I am, only thought about myself as usual. Nightfall came within a few hours and I had come to the conclusion that I would be saved in the morning, as I would probably see another aircraft pass by.

I awoke that morning feeling dreadful. The quilt had slowly eaten away at my brain all night, crucifying me as I lay in deep thought. Breakfast was a few berries from a nearby bush which was included in the medical food kit. which did not exactly appeal to my liking, but who was I to criticize as it was not like Tescos was just around the corner.

I washed in a small stream, which looked like something out of a movie. The water was crisp and clear, and so emblazoning my reflection like a mirror. I looked a state! "I am in the Amazon and concerned about my appearance!"

As the day crept onwards, it started to occur to me that my prediction of a plane flying over did not seem likely to happen. I was running out of supplies and so I started to try the radio transmitter to see if anyone was on the same frequency. Suddenly, I started to hear a mumbling sound which seemed to sound like someone speaking. I picked up the receiver and repeatedly started shouting, "help!" This went on for ten minutes until it occurred to me that it could just be wind. After giving the longest sigh in history, I flopped down on the sand to be confronted by thousands of stars. I lay gazing at the stars for the remainder of that night.

I awoke to a sunrise that would have been picture perfect had it not been for those berries that I had eaten the previous day. They must have been poisonous as I had not felt this bad since the morning of the last night out on the town with the boys! I started to feel unbelievably cold and started to tremble. My feet began to go stone cold as did my fingers. I had seen pictures of what frost bite had done to people and so prayed that it wasn't that.

Within a couple of minutes things went from bad to worse. I started Hallucinating and my adrenaline went sky high as I thought I heard the sound that had been at the back of my mind ever since I got here. That same sound which was the only one that I wanted to here. The sound of propellers. I was not hallucinating! Grabbing my remaining flare with my (thankfully) not yet frozen hand, I dashed to the open space where I had fallen asleep the past night looking at the stars. I sent one soaring into the sky. I took a large handful of palm tree leafs and used it as a flag to wave to the helicopter as another sign. The thought of it not noticing me was out of the question. I could now only wait and hope.

The Regal Social Tiers In Conjunction With Drama

In every society, people are instinctively categorized into a social class based on each person's terms of wealth, power, and privilege. In broad terms, every one existing in a civilization is classified as upper class, middle-class, or lower class. In drama, playwrights follow this social order to characterize the cast of characters they will include in their plays. The correlation between the realities of society's social tiers and drama were especially evident in the ancient Greek plays and in the era of Shakespearean theatre. Sophocles's Oedipus Rex along with William Shakespeare's Macbeth and King Lear are three tragedies that distinguish characters apart through their social status and rank. In Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, and King Lear, it becomes apparent that the home of the most prominent citizens made up its own social unit with members of the upper class, middle class, and lower class being involved in the formulation of a society.

The upper class citizens of both society and drama consist of those people with great wealth, power, and nobility. The kings, queens, princesses, and princes in plays are almost always upper class citizens also known as aristocrats. These characters are easily distinguished from others not only by their impressive titles but also in their excess of material comfort and convenience. In Macbeth, Macbeth becomes the most prominent of the elite upper class after taking murderous actions to become the all-powerful king.Once Macbeth gains the kingship, he embellishes his role in society by mistreating his subjects and his countrymen to flaunt his power and turn to tyrannical rule. Macbeth orders, "Send out more horses; skirr the country round. /Hang those who talk of fear" (5.6.6-7). In the dramatic interpretation of Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is quite comparable to Macbeth has he gains the foremost of titles as King although he, like Macbeth, already belonged to the noble upper class of citizens. However, the major difference is that Oedipus's power is used in a well-meaning way to save the civilization first from the Sphinx and then the plague.Oedipus's prominent status is even revealed through direct dialogue when the priest in calls Oedipus "our greatest power" (1.1 7-1) and describes him as rated first among all the men. The tragedy of King Lear, obviously by the title, also has characters of the upper rank of society. King Lear, the tired ruler of England, has an immense amount of worth as seen when he begins to divide his kingdom into three parts to give to his three daughters. Sadly, the humble king loses all power after enduring multiple humiliations and betrayals. As in reality, the status of upper class can be taken away quickly at any time as in the case of King Lear.Macbeth, King Lear, and Oedipus can be compared to the elite upper class of actual society as they rank the very highest, at least for some time, over their society.

The middle class of society and dramatic literature can be described as being made up of "commoners" who live comfortably but are neither rich nor very distinguished.Drama and literature also parallel in such a way that most often the middle class group of people hold upright professions and are respected by the other members of their community. In Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, the priest is an excellent example of a middle class citizen. The priest plays only a minor role in the play, however, if the play is to mirror a realistic society, his presence must exist. At the beginning of the play, the priest's presence becomes known as he urges his followers to make sacrifices to the gods in hopes that they will lift the blight that hangs over the city. It is the priest that Oedipus chooses to inquire to about the chaotic events he observes when he first comes to the city. In the prologue leading up to the play Oedipus says to the priest, "You, there since you are eldest in the company/ Speak for them all/ Tell me what press upon you…" (. 10-11).The unnamed doctor in Macbeth models a middle class society member in actuality. It is the doctor who confides in the gentlewoman that Lady Macbeth sleepwalks because of some mental and internal suffering as stated, "This disease is beyond my practice/yet I have known those which have walk'd in their sleeps who have died holily in their beds" (5.1, 56-58). This bit of information foreshadows the death of Lady Macbeth and tells the audience that Lady Macbeth is suffering from the guilt of Duncan's murder. In King Lear, Oswald is an excellent example of middle class society. His minor roll in the play is only important in the shadow of King Lear himself. Oswald will not be remembered for his character but merely for his mistreatment of the king in such a way that he prompts King Lear to leave Goneril's castle. Oswald meets his fate as Edgar murders him while trying to kill the harmless Gloucester. The priest, the doctor, and Oswald are examples of the middle class role in society both at the present time and in the long ago days of castles and kings.

Custom Essays on The Regal Social Tiers In Conjunciton With Drama

Both realized and dramatized society has members of lower class that are differentiated by poverty and no title to speak of. At the present time, lower class people are most often transients without a home and without a job. However, in the past centuries, the people who would not have a job or a place to live take up work as a servant to the more dignified members of society such as the royal families. In King Lear, the servant who remains most memorable is Earl of Kent, the loyal attendant to King Lear. The good hearted Earl is banished for pleading with the King to reconsider Cordelia's fate but remains committed to King Earl while remaining in disguise. Kent is quite a philosophical character that tells Goneril, "Some time I shall sleep out. The rest I'll whistle (4., ) In Oedipus Rex, the attendant to Oedipus and Jocasta is the revealer of what happened in the palace after Oedipus discovered his parentage. While the attendant may not be of great esteem, it is he who acts as messenger to the audience He tells them, " the full horror you can not know/For you did not see it; but I, who did, will tell you as clearly as I can how she met her death" (EXODUS, 1-15). In Macbeth, servants again represent the lower class part of society. The gentlewoman to Lady Macbeth is of the lower class, but it is she who holds the discussion with the respectable doctor about Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking condition. The gentlewoman expresses her own character when she tells the doctor "I would not have such a heart in my bosom for the dignity of the whole body" (5.1, 5-5). It is not very often that the audience gets a glimpse of the personal feelings of such a minor character. The servants in the three tragedies represent the lowest members of the ancient society just as the homeless transients represent the poverty stricken lower rank citizens of the present day society.

Hence, there has always been a social order among civilizations in which people are divided into social tiers based on such factors as economic wealth, status of power, and rank in comparison to others. Dramatic literature often parallels with the realistic society to give plays a more realistic style. In an actual society the different classes of people collaborate to fulfill the needs of the society. In medieval times these civilizations formed in kingdoms in which hundreds of people may live. The kingdom population was automatically divided into social classes in which playwrights such as Shakespeare and Sophocles's derived characters for their plays.

Is anyone actually responsible for the deaths of Romeo And Juliet?.From the beginning we know that their going to die, the prologue tells us, "From forth the fatial Loins of them two foes" and it also says, "A pair of star-cross'd Lovers take their lives"

The prologue is therefore telling the reader that other forces besides earthly ones are in control of our lover's lives. We know that Romeo is deeply interested in the heavens, to the point where they might well obsess him.there is various examples of this, "I fear, too early for my mind misgives

Some consequence yet hanging in the stars

Shall bitterly begin his fearful date

With this nights revels and expire the term"and "Will I set up my everlasting rest,

And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars"

Towards the end of the play Romeo is quite convinced that sooner or later something terrible will happen to him, which persuades him that it might be better that he delt the fatal act by his own hand.

This gives us an indication that Romeo himself is probably the greatest single cause for their deaths. It is obvious that he is a romantic falling in and out of love. His actions are based on the spur of the moment decisions, rather than cool, logic. For example; within 4 hours of falling in love with Juliet he is married to her.

Because of the feud between their respective families Romeo would have undoughtly been in many fights.Which indicates another side to his personality; one, which has no fear. This is clearly shown after Tybalt kills Mercutio.Romeo instantly retaliates dishing out the same fatal punishment to Tybalt, which he does without stopping to think.Another example of his impulsive nature is when, after hearing of Juliet's death he decides there and then to kill himself, by the acquisition of poison from a dodgy pharmacist.

Maybe if Romeo hadn't been soo impatient, impulsive and fearless and thought more about the consequences of his actions, then maybe he wouldn't have got himself into soo much trouble, and alternately cause the death of four people including himself.

Like most girls of Juliets age, marriage is a very important part of their acceptance into adult society. This is even more so for girls who come from noble families.

Further more girls were expected to marry men that their parents had chosen.Love marriages were rare. The Capulets were no different.Even though she was just thirteen years old, Juliets parents have already laid the ground out for her to marry Paris. With girls being brought up in a very disciplined and secure regime there were very few opportunities to meet boys.

On falling in love with Romeo she must have been aware as to the consequence of her actions. She was, therefore either very stupid to flout her parents or extremely brave. We know that she did many brave things.Besides the one just mentioned she also takes a sleeping potion, not knowing as to whether she will wake up or not.She also gets married in total secrecy. And subsequently goes on to commit suicide because she couldn't face life without her husband.

If she had not been such a courages and independently minded person and instead more timed and obedient to her parents wishes then Paris, would have been her future husband, and all would have been alive.

The interactions of the other characters had no real significant part in the deaths of our two lovers.Maybe we could well blame Benvolio fir persuading Romeo to go to the party.Or we could blame the doorman for not being able to check the party invitations.Even the holy Friar should have acted more responsible and gone out of his way to discourage the lovers from doing what they did.Could we even blame the dodgy pharmacist for selling something he shouldn't have.As for Juliets nurse or more precise her nanny, her friend, her protector surly she was totally out of order in getting involved as a messenger. If she had acted professionally Juliets parents would have been informed as to what was going on, allowing the necessary defensive measures to be put into place.

Although we are given that Tybalt is a troublemaker, he nevertheless only fights to defend the honour of the family. On his death he was deeply mourned by his family, however throughout the play there is no real indication that any of his actions lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, whilst he would have gladly killed the former.

There is no questioning my mind that the two principle characters were actually responsible for their own deaths. As to whether this way was due to fate I remain unconvinced ironically the play was ahead of its time by highlighting an area of contention where marriages are decided by families rather then those who are to be married. It is a play well suited to contempery times. Both Romeo and Juliet baulked the traditions and customs that were vogue in that time.Without Juliets parents blessing and hence permission of any marriage then tragedy would be inevitable.

Problem #1

One of the first problems to be addressed is that ambiguous terms are being used in the mission statement. The mission statement reads as follows

"With the foundation and commitment of our spiritual heritage and values, our mission is to promote the health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve through a comprehensive continuum of services provided in collaboration with the partners who share the same vision and values."

The mission statement uses ambiguous terms like "spiritual heritage and values", 'promote the health and well being through a comprehensive continuum of services'.These statements unfortunately would mean different things to different people, which is precisely the case.Currently the hospital faces many problems that can be linked directly to this ambiguous mission statement.According to the CEO of the Faith foundation hospital "We've got some interesting interpretations of the mission statement being made in all our stakeholder groups".

One of those stakeholder groups is the Board of director's whose "diversity alone represents a kaleidoscope of thinking and decision-making."If the board of Director's is having trouble interpreting the mission statement, than how are others able to decipher it?Cleaning up the mission statement has to be one of the highest priorities. This is the major problem being faced by the hospital, and may directly or indirectly contribute to the other problems facing this hospital.

Solution #1

The solution to this issue is relatively simple.Simplify and clarify the mission statement.Replace misleading or ambiguous sentences with clear and concise wording.

The second major problem is that the hospital needs clear and concise definitions regarding procedures. These procedures fall into three main categories.Medical, Administrative and Religious. The first, Medical, would deal with the way current medical procedures are being performed. Some doctors and nursing staff feel it's necessary to create their own ways of doing things based on the current situation. The hospital has counselors treating patients without payment, or pro-bono.Medical procedures such as Do-Not-Resuscitate(DNR) need to be carefully monitored. On two occasions DNR orders were followed incorrectly. This needs to be an iron clad policy, with no wavering or on-site interpretations by the attending medical staff. This will need to be looked at by the legal staff.Another issue that has come from a lack of structured policy is the ordering of unnecessary tests for the terminally ill.Any ordering of tests needs to be checked for validity.

The second category of procedures, administrative, would include current administrative guidelines such as insurance coverage. One of the pharmacists is accepting prescription payments on an installment basis. Is there a policy in place regarding this?Another administrative procedure that needs clarifying is whether the hospital gives care if insurance coverage has not been confirmed first. As the CEO puts it "All we need is for someone to die because we didn't service him or her!"

Solution administrative

A decision needs to be made, do we accept prescription payments on an installment basis. The answer is yes. It is better to be paid slowly than not at all.An installment plan can be structured to allow for interest or finance charges to help offset any added costs. As to the question of whether care can be given to those whose insurance has been verified? If the injury is deemed to be life threatening of course any medical procedures will be performed without the need to wait for the paperwork to be filed. If an injury or medical condition is deemed to be non life threatening, than insurance coverage can be verified before treatment is performed. The verification process could be as simple as a phone call to the insurance provider. This can be done while the patient waits for medical personnel to treat them.

The third would be religion. What is the policy regarding religious beliefs? Can a patient refuse treatment or a Doctor withholdtreatment based on religious convictions?Do Not Resusitate?

We need a more uniform coverage definition form the HMO's and PPO's etc. There is too much difference between who gets covered, for how much and how the hospital gets paid.

SolutionThere needs to be uniform payment terms put in place. All insurance companies must comply. Etc.

4Lowering costs.Average cost per patient up from 17 to 40.Costs go up every year that is a basic inevitability.Only 8% of the costs are fixed.Need to increase patient populations.

SolutionAdvertise, work with HMO's PPO's to become hospital of choice, become a preferred hospital.Look for ways to become more efficient.
