For managers evaluating the competitive implications of their resources and capabilities, these observations lead to the second critical issue How many competing firms already possess these valuable resources and capabilities?


Consider, for example, two firms competing in the global communications and computing industries NEC and AT&T. Both these firms are developing many of the same capabilities that are likely to be needed in these industries over the next decade. These capabilities are clearly valuable, although--since at least these two firms, and maybe others, are developing them--they may not be rare. If they are not rare, they cannot--by themselves--be sources of competitive advantage for either NEC or AT&T. If either of these firms is to gain competitive advantages, they must exploit resources and capabilities that are different from the communication and computing skills they are both cited as developing. This may be part of the reason why AT&T recently restructured its telecommunications and computer businesses into separate firms.(n)


While resources and capabilities must be rare among competing firms in order to be a source of competitive advantage, this does not mean that common, but valuable, resources are not important. Indeed, such resources and capabilities may be essential for a firms survival

Obviously, imitation is critical to understanding the ability of resources and capabilities to generate sustained competitive advantages. If one firm has a competitive advantage because of its research and development skills, then a duplicating firm will try to imitate that resource by developing its own research and development skills. Capital Punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the severest form of


penalty for crime. The death penalty is illegal in some states. Whether or not the criminal


deserves the death penalty will be decided by a jury. To be considered for the death


penalty today, the crime must be no less severe than first degree murder which means


murder with premeditation, the suspect must be convicted of murder beyond all


reasonable doubts. Some other factors considered by the jury are the age of the victim,


the way the crime was committed, the number of victims and the history of the murderer.


There have been five methods of execution since recent history Lethal Injection,


Gas Chamber, Electric Chair, Hanging and Firing Squad. Recently, most death penalties


have been carried out by lethal injection. The process of execution is as follows. After the


execution order is received, the condemned inmate is moved into a special security area


of the prison. Based on hourly checks, the staff documents his/her behavior and brings


anything unusual to the warden's attention. The inmate receives priority visiting


privileges; no visitors are turned away without authorization of the warden. Every effort


is made to accommodate visits by the inmate's attorney including weekend or holiday


visits if necessary. Two reports are prepared within three weeks of the established


execution date. The first is 0 days before execution; the second is seven days before


execution. Each report includes Psychiatric report - Results and interpretation of


examinations, interviews and history of the inmate by three psychiatrists which will be


used to determine the inmate's sanity; Chaplain report - Comments on the inmate's


spiritual and emotional well-being; Summary of behavior - Observations noted by case


worker and custody staff; Cover letter from warden - Includes firsthand information from


interviews, observations or communication with the inmate and his/her family or friends.


Within 0 to seven days before the execution, the inmate's attorney may submit current


psychiatric information that may have a bearing on the sanity of the condemned inmate.


This information will be provided to the panel of psychiatrists to consider in completion


of the pre-execution psychiatric reports. The last 4 hours the inmate gets to enjoy his


favorite meal, watch TV or listen to the radio, then he or she will receive a new pair of


denim trousers and shoes. Just before the execution, the inmate is asked if he or she has


any last words while three syringes are prepared with lethal chemicals. The syringes


contain 5.0 grams of sodium pentothal in 0-5 cc of diluent, 50 cc of pancuronium


bromide, 50 cc of potassium chloride and are administered into the body respectively.


After the application of sodium pentothal the inmate will lose consciousness, then the


arteries will be blocked by the pancuronim bromide, and last the potassium chloride will


stop the inmate's heart. As required by law a physician is present to declare when death


occurs. The body is usually claimed by the victims family, if not, it will be taken care of


by the prison.


From 10 to 167, ,85 persons were executed under civil (nonmilitary)


jurisdiction in the United States. During this period over half of those executed were


black, 45 percent were white, and the remaining small percentage were of other racial


groups American Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino. The vast majority of those


executed were men;women were executed from 10 to 167. Three out of five


executions during that period took place in the southern U.S. The state of Georgia had the


highest number of executions during the period, totaling 66 -- more than nine percent of


the national total. Texas followed with 7 executions; New York with ; California


with ; and North Carolina with 6. Most executions (,4 of ,85) were for the


crime of murder; 455 prisoners (1%), ninety percent of them black, were executed for


rape; 70 prisoners were executed for other offenses. During the same period, the U.S.


Army (including the Air Force) executed 160 individuals, including 106 executions for


murder (including 1 involving rape), 5 for rape, and one for desertion. Private Eddie


Slovik was the first military personnel ever to be executed for desertion in 145. The U.S.


Navy has executed no one since 184. From 176, when executions were resumed, until


this year, there have been 80 executions in the US. This includes 66 during 001 and 71


in 00. About two out of three executions are conducted in only five states Texas,


Virginia, Missouri, Florida and Oklahoma. Texas leads the other states in number of


executions. In late 00, there were about ,67 prisoners sentenced to death in 7 state


death rows, and 1 being held by the U.S. government and military. About one point five


percent are women. A hundred and two have been exonerated and freed since 17,


largely after having been proven innocent by DNA evidence. In spite of the slight


increase in U.S. executions between 001 and 00, the number of new death sentences


decreased significantly.


The death penalty issue has been the focus of much controversy in recent years.


There are ample valid arguments on both the pro's and the con's side. Pros would argue

Excruciating pain is what my rotting flesh cries out each new day that welcomes my face. I had lost all reason to be happy… I could never be happy now that I lost a vital part of me. Believe me when I say that even as I write, I cannot fully comprehend these minute factions my mind has endlessly depictured. He, He… I believe I'm enjoying this. Typing nonchalantly, letting my fingers slip silkily on the black square buttons of this keyboard is the welcomest sound I have heard for a long while. And I thought I had really lost myself? How did I even dare to think that? For once, my brainy conceptions have been soothing to hear once in a while. And yes, I'm back to that endless routine of mine. Shall I push myself to believe that things could only get any better? Hmm… I think it's too early to pinpoint that it already has… And yet it seems as though I really am kickstarting my motor.


Ahh! It has been a long time since I last wrote… I mean, really wrote… perhaps my poetic world missed me as much as I missed her… We haven't seen each other for a while though… Hmm..Where do we start? Actually, what I have in mind was to relay in clean germless precision every strained detail of the things I pondered on and well, ahem! Learned all the while I was fooling myself. (Now were getting serious…) How indeed have I flattered myself! For one minute, I was on top of them all. Waving and laughing at their noses practically sneering to the whole world my undying proclamation of how severely gifted Iam to have this deadly brain that endlessly slaves to do my purpose. My humility has lowered itself to that of a male chauvinist swine bag. I was good, or so I thought. One minute, I was the absolute limelight of the society… the next minute, I'm reduced to no more than an ugly, crude stereotype of Cinderella… (sighs!…) Just let me drive through my ocean of thoughts….


Really now! What sickened me is the fact that I let myself drown in this mess in the first place. My Mind leered that I could possibly accomplish every single task they would let me tackle with. I was too blind to notice that Iam not even as good as they are… and I thought that I was that good. So much for pain huh? All I knew at that time was I was a girl too good to be true. Except for Math, I could do almost everything with ease, or so I thought. I never thought the day would come when I finally would be forced to chew my own words… They told me experience is the best teacher.


Heck! It really did teach me a whole lot of things that I couldn't have learned at home. No matter how you seem to understand certain things that other people normally wouldn't, no matter how privileged you feel being able to understand these things easily, never PLEASE! Never even think that you are well ahead anybody else in the class. You and your classmates are made just the way you should be.


The fact that you know certain things or understand certain perspectives of your lesson does not mean that you'll go on silently lifting your head up every time you pass the corridors, fervently wishing that someone from your class would notice you and give you praises for several outstanding things you contributed for the class that day. Try to condition your mind to believe that you are the dumbest student in your class and that your classmates are far too superior for you to even attempt to compare your grades with them. If this doesn't work for you, (coz it does for me..) try feeling GENUINE humility every time someone gives you credit for what you have dutifully accomplished as a hardworking student. Were not working for someone to rain us praises here. Were working here to study and if you feel that you cannot keep up with your study mate's wit, try to console yourself that its only a matter of time before you reach her masterful potential. Remember that if one soul is really that passionate in obtaining his/her marks, that soul will really reach his glory. And when I mean glory, I mean GLORY!


Just this morning, I had been accompanied by my mother for enrollment. Upon seeing my name on the list of those students who were asked to report to our college, I never knew I was about to enter a big trouble. My heart knew how messy things would go for now. I never expected this to be so hard though. One moment, I was so damn confident that all is going to be fine… The next moment, I badly want to die…


See, I cursed myself. I was the one who brought these changes in my life. I was the one who brought chaos and universal disarray in myself. All the time, I thought I was doing the right thing. Yun pala, maling mali ako…


I was wrong in every stupid thing that my mind had once declared logical. I wasn't at all smart. Smart people wouldn't commit the mistakes I had. Iam never smart. I was only a dumb little fool thinking that I understand things. I should've known better. The more you feel smart pala, the more that you will end up down diyan sa dirt na ginawa mo… I lost the humility I was once bursting off. Ngayon, everything changed na. Now this Florence is much more careful than ever. They say that experience is the best teacher? Well, I'd have to add that a little fiery sermon is a much-needed wake up call for all of us. It was only today that I realized that the attitude I conveyed to the whole universe declared as though I wasn't looking forward to any bright future. Although I do have my ambitions, but still, it had to be readily admitted that ambitions, no matter how reachable they may be cannot be gained without being vigorous in your persuasion. We, not only have to be optimistic. We also, must be futuristically conclusive of our actions. That we must never let ourselves go with the flow, for we cannot always be sure where that gushing stream may lead us. It is true when they say that inevitable is never cruel. But it cannot always be so gentle. The universal law is at work here. For whatever is planted is always gained three fold.


Looking in our innermost depths, we can see the real picture of our present personal stature. Always remember that though we can fool everyone by our calm bearing and seemingly pure motives, fool ourselves by believing that we are like this although deep down we know that we truly aren't, It wasn't them whom we fooled. It is us. We fool ourselves to believe in a bright future when we do nothing in order it to be made reality. We fool ourselves into thinking we can move people when we ourselves cannot be certain if we indeed have mastery over our own selves.


Walking fools we are, when we are inclined to believe that everything in this world can be solved with just one sitting. Everything that happens, be it good or bad, has it roots to our behavior. On how we act or behave in order for us to make the unreachable very much attainable. It had been months since I last wrote a literary piece. Months passed after I lost all meaning to write. Then I realized, that I never really did lose any of my former talents. That I was only deceived by my troubled mind in to thinking thus. In my confusion, I almost forgot to focus on a very essential fact that I should've known months ago. That Talents, are never lost. Though some may be gained through years of experience and careful practice, if there will come a time that all seemed to be lost in the thick void that seemed to eat you, remember, that they only slumber. Just like the phoenix who rises again and again from the gray ashes it had ignited itself upon, your true glimmer can only outshine when after the pain, the beauty that was once kept secret will finally prove its luster, to shine on and on for eternity…

Close to 160,000 years ago, a star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy close to the Milky Way, burst itself in a majestic, yet violent death, an outstanding example of a supernova explosion.From this exploding star, light and other forms of radiation spread outward in all directions, traveling six trillion miles each year, with radiation passing into dust-shrouded interstellar clouds, speeding through the nearly empty reaches of some intergalactic medium, and radiating into other galaxies.Some of this radiation-about one part in a quadrillion of the total-reached the planet Earth, where it lit the skies as the brightest supernova explosion seen in nearly four centuries. Supernovae, stars that explode at the end of their extremely long lifespan, remain as one of the most wondrous events that take place in the known universe. A supernova consists of three main phases; what happens to the star before the supernova, what happens during the supernova, and what happens after the supernova.


First, there should be an explanation of what happens to a star to cause it to go supernova.During the life of a star, it undergoes a process called nuclear fusion, which produces a number of different elements and a huge abundance of heat and light energy

by the reaction is pulled toward the center of the star, causing the core of the star to greatly increase in mass over large amounts of time.When enough mass is accumulated in the core, one of two things happen.Either the star will explode from the extreme force pushing outward from the core, or the star will implode from the gravitational pull inward towards the core. Whichever one happens, it will be known as a supernova.


Moving on, the next question is what happens when a star goes supernova?One of two things can occur when a star goes supernova.The first thing that can happen, and is the more likely of the two to happen, is the star explodes, which is caused by the core of star gaining a tremendous amount of mass.Due to the extreme amount of mass,the core exerts a force so strong that everything contained in the star is forcefully pushed outward at an extremely high rate of speed. When the star explodes, the force created is so powerful that it will utterly destroy anything within a ten light year radius of the explosion (Wheeler, p.147).The second thing that can happen is the star attempts to be forced outward, but if not enough mass is pushed away from the gravitational pull of the core, the star will implode upon itself.This does not tend to occur as much as explosion, but if and when it occurs, the mass of the star is pulled toward the core, creating what is known as a black hole.A black hole creates an inward force so powerful that not even light has the ability to escape the gravitational pull (Lerner, p. 84).


Finally, what happens after a supernova explodes or implodes?Starting with what


happens when a star explodes, after the contents of the star is expunged from the core, the core morphs itself into what is called a White Dwarf.White Dwarves are extremely small, sometimes only as big as baseballs, but even though they have a small size, the

amount of mass contained in them is approximately three-fifths of the mass of the Sun.White Dwarves contain radiation, mainly alpha and beta rays, that keep them oscillating and pulsing with small amounts of light (Wheeler, p. 14).After a long amount of time, White Dwarves are thought to restart their nuclear fusion process, thus creating a new star from an extinguished one. The remaining occurrence after a star goes supernova happens when the star implodes upon the core of the star.The effect of this is called a black hole.A black hole is said to be a very rare occurrence in the known universe, and they are also one of the most mysterious phenomena that exists.Scientists are currently unable to get anywhere near a black hole to study it, number one, for the fact that it would take far too long to get to the closest one near the Earth with current technology, and number two, because time and space do not exist in a black hole, anything that enters the area around the black hole will be trapped inside and will be forever unable to escape (Goldsmith, p.1).


Scientists are now aware of what happens during the course of a stars life that leads up to a supernova, what happens during the supernova, and the things that are able to happen after the supernova has occurred.A supernova is probably one of the biggest phenomena that scientists have yet to explain.It is still not entirely known why they explode, or what causes them to implode.Science is also still unsure about what causes a black hole, what happens inside of a black hole, and if there is any way of escaping the extreme amount of inward gravitational pull towards the center of the black hole.Supernovae, which supposedly made the heavy elements, made the planets, made the life that inhabit those planets, and made the cosmic rays that help drive evolution, are also
