As she walked across the food court, she felt as if everyone's eyes were directed towards her. Her palms turned sweaty and her face blank. What I a supposed to do with my hands? I told them how I was the same way and when I lost weight those feelings gradually went away without me even noticing. She told the other girls and myself, "When I lost weight I noticed that I had an easier time speaking in front of people, meeting new people, I felt energized, I felt like I fit in more and the comments I got from people I think helped with everything" (Murray). When I first lost twenty pounds, I knew I had lost that much but it did not seem like it. I looked the same, I thought, though my mom told me otherwise. I thought it was a waste, that is until I tried on my favorite pair of Gap jeans size 14. After I put them on I, I was so excited I ran to my mom and showed her. They were big and baggy in the butt and thighs and the best part, I could take them off without unzipping them. Then my shirts became looser in the arms, my gramma arms (when you wave, your upper arms waves with you) were disappearing gradually and the shirts were loose around my belly. Those physical aspects helped further my weight loss because rather than someone saying I lost weight, I could visually see it, in the sagginess of my clothes.

Now do not get me wrong, the comments and compliments from other people do help. The compliments help because they re-enforce all the hard work a person has done to lose the weight. Lastly the emotional aspect. Being overweight and a teen is painful. Your peers are very judgmental and rude and do not care if they say something hurtful, because it just helped them climb the popularity ladder. Starting during the spread of Africans as slaves the music of the cultures of Africa have come together and blended to help transform the music of the past into the music that most Americans listen to today including selections such as hip pop, r & B, and rap. Slaves thought they may have been, these first Africans helped shape the culture that we live in.

During the African Diaspora, when slaves from the east Africa's were brought to India and the Americas, much of the music was tribal hymns and religious chants. Used as a way to communicate long distance or messages to mass crowds, African music has a quality of pure volume over the other music being brought to America. The instruments of African decent mostly consisted of the bells, drums and rattles. While the music at first was used as a form of communication between tribes that could not linguistically understand each other, it eventually developed into a form of entertainment in the late 100's. Slaves before the emancipation proclamation generally used music as a form of entertainment, recreation and a means to work through a day in the fields. Comedy allows people to become more compliant and connect with an actor or perform and this was no different in the black face shows. "When African and European music began to merge to create what eventually would become the blues, the slaves sang songs filled with words telling of their extreme suffering and privation"(tanner, 6) Many time the artist will talk about the trouble that they have had in their life. Originally the banjo being one of the major instruments of African American music was discarded because of its use by other styles of music. The guitar however was a cheap instrument easily carried around and if tuned properly had a much lower resonance that went well with the blues. The blues is easily recognizable by it's tone and rhythm as well as it's structure. "The classical form of blues is the well known pattern three line verse, in twelve measures of 4/4 rhythm, with the a-a-b rhythm pattern and a time length usually measured by five stressed syllables"(cohn, 17). However blues is still debated about in relationship to when it was originally introduced. W.C. Handly was truly the first recorded artist, however the true first artist to publish a true folk blues song recorded on record was done by Blind lemon Jefferson. "It was the 16 recording of Blind lemon Jefferson, a true southern folk blues man from Texas, that opened the flood for the recording of down home blues." (cohn , 7)

Blues is noted for it's unique style of call and responses as well as the use of blue notes to create a sad melody. "When the copyist attempted to write down the music, they came up with the so called "blues scale" in which the third, the seventh and sometime the fifth scale degrees were lowered a half step, producing a scale resembling the minor scale.(machlis, 578). Yet the music of blues is more than just the lowering of a few notes to make it sound melancholy. It also has many characteristics such as the 1 bar progression. "There are many nuances of melody and rhythm in blues that are difficult if not impossible to write in conventional notation." In every way blues was a form of music new unto itself. It broke many of the original constraints thought to be on music and came up with something wholly unique unto America. "By the mid-twenties, instrumental blues were common and "playing the blues" for the instrumentalist could mean extemporizing a melody within a blues cord sequence. Brass, reed and string instruments, in particular were able to produce many vocal sounds of the blue singers"(machlis 578-57). Blues was an attempt at an artist to emotionally connect with his audience and convey his feelings. Also much of blues is extemporaneous meaning coming up with it as they perform it and thus a habit of A-A-B lyrics where conceived. "The repetition of the first line servers a purpose as it gives the singer some time to come up with a third line. Often the lyrics of blues song do not seem to fit the music, but a good blues singer will accent certain syllables and eliminate others so that everything falls nicely into place."(Tanner, 8). Rhythm in the blues is also very unique. "Blues rhythm is also very flexible. Performers often sing "around" the beat, accepting notes either a little before or behind the beat."(kamien, 50)

While African tradition did bring these songs into America they are truly American music. Ragtime combines the music of so many cultures it is in my opinion actually hard to distinguish who added the most to the mix. However there would never have been a Ragtime if it were not for the idea of the heavy piano beats that were created during its era. The rhythm and musical composure are made up of many African traditions that make it very stimulating. In conclusion the African Diaspora took many Africans out of their home countries. While in many ways it was a horrible crime against these people to enslave them against their will, the music that they produced will always stand as a testament that you may enslave a people but you cannot make them be something other then what they are. Lifes struggles, seem to remain the same no matter what day of age.Technology and the advancement of the human race has little or no effect on what people still battle with on an everyday occurrence.In the play of "Antigone" the conflicts of humanity vs. the gods, the state vs. the individual, women vs. men, youth vs. age, and the living vs. the dead, in Ancient Greek society are explored.Contemporary audiences can still strongly relate to these conflicts even though taking place in ancient times.Antigone even by modern times would be more closely sympathized with than Creon, because of the common values which we are still taught today.These values are loyalty, persistence, the freedom to practice religion and most importantly honor the dead.

Within the play there is much outweighing evidence which supports, such as the common people and how they still put the decree of the gods over any laws made by men.Even the Chorus who closely follows and obeys Creon, disagrees with his decision to not allow the burial of Antigone's brother, Polyneices.Today laws are written to take into account the basic underlying morals and beliefs of all religion, not completely so that there is no separation between the state and religion but so that they both acknowledge each other.

have an uprising and be thrown out of power.The interesting thing is that this story is a Greek tragedy and the Greeks had a very spiritual background, which consisted of many gods and superstitions.Even today religion still plays a major role in most everyones lives; even if not everyone practices religion.Religion is what has set many of our social and moral boundaries.

Antigone and many of the people believed that since her brother was not buried, that the gods would not rest until his flesh was one with the earth.During the time that this was written, the gods played major roles in naturally occurring events and this idea carried over into Antigone's and the people's belief.Even though laws were in place and the people were happy to abide by them, the laws of the gods surpassed those of the state.

Antigone who in a sense becomes the people's moral and spiritual leader, takes it upon herself to bury her brother.At this point in the play is where Antigone starts to show her persistence and her relentlessness to see her brothers natural right carried out.This action even though in her own mind is justice being served, is no better than her own dead brother's, in the eye of the Creon and the state.The body is found buried by Creon's men and is dug up, this saddens Antigone once again and she then attempts yet another time to bury him but this time she is caught in the act.Before Creon knows it is Antigone, his own chorus questions whether or not "it be the gods [who] have done this?"(DiYanni p.817)When Creon learns that it is not the actions ofthe gods and rather that of Antigone's, he sentences her to death.When this happens people start to for tale disaster

Creon learns to late that what he has done has lead to his own kin's death.He also learns that ultimately the laws of the gods and the spiritual world run deeper than laws created by man.Even today laws are written to not offend the views that of any person but are still there to provide boundaries for us to conduct our daily lives within.Religion is always a touchy subject when it comes to the whole of man because not everyone practices but most everyone believes in some higher being.When being a spiritual animal, humans have basic essential believes especially when dealing with the dead.What happens to us after death is different for all of us but most people believe that we should exit this world with some showing of respect, this is usually done with some sort of ceremony.Ceremony's for different religions may not be the same but the basic concept is.Creon was imposing his view upon not only Antigone but the whole society in which he governed.People even though they knew Polyneices was a traitor still did not want to upset the gods by not properly burying him.

be] shredded by dogs(DiYanni p.88).No matter how harsh someones crime may be, they are still givin the respect of a burial or however they want their body disposed of.So in the play, Antigone was just trying to do what she believed was the honorable thing to do and that was to give her brother a proper burial.

The values of loyalty, persistence, freedom to practice religion and to honor the dead were clearly carried out by Antigone.These basic values are still very strongly believed in, even in contemporary society.Today, with or without religion people still understand the importance of having clear cut devotion for the ones we love and to never waver with this devotion.And, to make sure our dead are seen to have an honorable closure to their lives.When these basic values were not upheld and carried out by Creon, this clearly was why Antigone who in today's standards was more closely related to.
