Hello, I was born in Arizona into a loving household.Unfortunately, heat wasn't my only problem when I was growing up.I was born with the disease Elephantites.Elephantites causes one or more body parts to be overly proportioned, compared to the rest of someone's body. For me it was a mild yet still very emotionally scaring form of the disease. My left ear was twice as large as the right ear, unfortunately didn't hideously deform me but it was twice as bad.I wasn't given much sympathy for it, because it was such a slight deformation. As I went through life and into my teens I was given the worst treatment in my whole life, but two times stick out in my mind.

The first starts when my family and I decided to go to Disneyland during summer break. We had been there for nearly a week when I saw that even Disneyland has some downfalls (for someone like me). We were all standing in line to get on Splash Mountain, when I noticed a group of older teens mostly guys but there were two or three girls. They were all looking back at me and laughing but, soon one of the girls saw me looking at them she tried to get them to stop.I had gotten used to this kind of treatment at school and at other public places, so I was able to just ignore them. After, going on the ride with my family I needed to use the facilities. I started walking off to the bathroom as I did this, I didn't realize until I was almost inside the bathroom, the same group of kids, which had been behind me, were fallowing me. I did my business and I was leaving the bathroom when one of the kids got right into my face and, unknown to me, another bent down behind me.The kid in my face was calling me all sorts of name mostly dumbo and F$%& big ear, and then he pushed me I fell on to my back. I tried to get up but it was too late two of them grabbed me I tried to resist them but it was no use they were stronger than anyone I knew (including Ryan Raji). They started taking me into the bathroom. The rest of their group came over and began to chant " Swirly! Swirly! Swirly!"One of them had been flicking my big ear then, all of them joined. The one leading, kicked a stall door open he took my head shoved it in the toilet, and flushed. I still cringe when I flush the toilet.

My second most humiliating experience came at the hands of a teenage girl. There was a girl I really liked her name was Andrea.Other than my ears, I had another thing working against me she had gone out with this kid named Mike, but everyone called him Mario. Anyway, Andrea and I had rd hour together I decided to try to get her to go with me to the school dance on Friday she laughed and told me she would. But later that week Mario herd I was going with Andrea. He decides to have a talk with me about it. While I was eating my pizza, all of a sudden, my ear was grabbed and I was pulled away from the table it was Mike, of course, up set at me for going to the dance with his ex. He put me up on the table and had other students take turns giving my enlarged ear a wet wily by the end of lunch my ear was soaked with spit. That was nothing until Andrea found out and came up to me and said " I don't think I can go with u anymore" then while she was walking away she flicked my ear.

My life is filled with pain and torment because of my disease, but every once and a while I get a taste of how a normal person lives and it makes it worth it to go through the hard times. I can only dream of how it would be to be a normal member of society but, I think I would be happier person and be able to help more people. I also think I would appreciate a lot less like just being normal, not always being stared at and mocked for my appearance.I hope I will be best remembered for persevering through hard times and be an inspiration to those who have physical deformations. Despite everything, I think I wouldn't have become so enlightened to the ways of the world or be as open minded as I am now. Therefore, in the end everything will continue to make up for my abnormalities

Case #Futile Heroics

"Agnes" an 8 year old lady who is a MediCal patient came into Stanford Hospital to have the mitral valve in her heart replaced. The surgery was successful but after the operation she became weak and feverish.Later, the doctors suggested that the site of the infection was the prosthetic mitral valve itself. The only solution would be to replace the artificial valve, which is impossible.Agnes is dependent on the ventilator, her kidneys have been damaged by the antibiotic therapy, and she is too weak and debilitated to survive another major operation.Agnes' family has insisted that everything be done to keep her alive."She's a fighter," the family members say."She's always slow to recover, even from a cold, but recover she does!"The cost of maintaining Agnes in the ICU is reaching nearly one million and doctors are skeptical of her recovery.Taking off the ventilator is now an option. The very expensive cost of keeping Agnes alive raises the question, "Should she continue to be kept on the ventilator, or should she be taken off it, which will end her life?"Saving someone's life should not even be a question. If you can give someone a chance to live, then do it without a doubt in mind. The doctors should keep Agnes on the ventilator and let God decide when to die.

God created everything in this world.Everything we have is because of him.He is the one who gave us life; therefore, he should also be the one to decide when to take it away.Just because we may have the power to end someone's life even if we think it is for their own good, it is not up to us to decide that matter.Taking the ventilator off of Agnes is like taking her life away.Who are we to do that to her?Especially if her own family members want to do everything to keep Agnes wit them.If we take off the ventilator, then we end her life right away.We don't just deprive her of the ventilator, but we also take away her chance of living longer in this world.

She is fighting so hard to stay alive and be with her family, and then we come and take away her only means of surviving. It's murder. How can you live on with your conscience knowing you did something so immoral and dreadful?Agnes is not giving up.Instead she is struggling to stay alive and live even though it is very difficult for her.She obviously does not want to go yet. She is undertaking severe pain just to be with her family a

little longer. We should at least take that into consideration. If she is not giving up on herself, why should we?Let her decide when she has had enough and when she is ready to leave.

Some people who have no faith in Agnes might say that we are wasting our money in keeping her alive for a short time when we all know she will die eventually. These people have no heart for even putting money first before a person. If it was them or someone they love on that deathbed then their mind would probably change. They wouldn't care how much money is spent as long as they make sure their loved one is safe and in good condition. But since the situation does not affect them directly, they are not considerate nor sympathetic.

It is true that a huge amount of money is being spent to keep Agnes alive, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it is a waste of money. For her loved ones, an hour, a minute, or even just a second to be with Agnes is priceless. If that money is not spent on Agnes, it will just go to the rich people so that they can be richer. Now isn't that a waste? It will go to the celebrities' paychecks or the politicians' campaign.Knowing that, wouldn't you rather see the money go to something

productive and worthy like saving someone's life?

It is sad to think that some people actually care more about money than a human being.Growing up makes you lose that childhood innocence. When we were little kids, we did not care about money. We wanted to be a fireman, a doctor, or a cop so that we can save someone's life.We didn't think of getting paid for the good deeds we would do.Since we're grown up money is the most important thing now.Everything we do we expect something in return. If Agnes's life depended on the children's decision then she would be safe without a doubt. We should think about someone's life first for a change instead of how much money we are going to spend, or waste, as some people would think of it.

Choose a novel which you think has a definite turning point or decisive moment.Explain briefly what happens at the moment and go on to explain why it is so important to the rest of the novel

The Scarecrows

The novel "The Scarecrows" by Robert Westall is a fascinating character study of a boy named Simon. This work has a definite turning point that is important to both the understanding of the main character and of the destruction of the mill and scarecrows.

This turning point occurs towards the end of the book, soon after Simon's friend Tris arrives for a visit.Simon's psychological problems peak and give the book a dramatic, powerful ending.

However, in order to clearly understand this turning point, its important to understand the main character (Simon Wood) and certain points of the book's plot.Simon is the central character in the book, and the catalyst for the dramatic events at the work's conclusion.

Simon is a very troubled, father-less young man.He attends an all-boys boarding school. He is deeply disturbed when his mother marries Joe Moreton, an artist.Simon still remembers his dead father (Derek). His father was almost like a god to Simon - indeed, his influence remains strong on Simon who measures everything in his life against his father's values. He just cannot accept his mother's new marriage - by doing so he would be betraying his father.

The book opens with Simon at the boarding school. He feels very isolated and under pressure there.Simon demonstrates his extremely violent tendencies when he attacks his classmate Bowden. When he does this, he sees "the devils".Later, when he goes home on holiday to his new step-father's house, tension surfaces between Simon and other members of his family. This is largely due to his disapproval of his mother's relationship with Joe, and because of his strong memories of his father.

During his visit, Simon discovers the derelict, sinister watermill on Joe's property. He later learns of its gruesome history from Mr. Mercyfull, the gardener.

The scarecrows of the titleare menacing figures in the turnip field near the house. As Simon becomes more disturbed, the scarecrows become more threatening and appear to be advancing towards the house - and Simon. To Simon, the scarecrows are alive.

Simon's school friend Tris la Chard comes to visit him.It is the arrival of Tris that triggers crucial developments in the plot which lead to its definitive turning point.

This turning point - the destruction of the mill and scarecrows - begins when Simon's emotional distress reaches a peak during a family game of "ghosties".Extremely disturbed, Simon deliberately destroys the mill by opening its water sluice. This causes the building to violently self-destruct.

The following passage from the book illustrates Simon's changed state of mind after the destruction of the mill

"Simon sighed with adeep satisfaction.Whether Mum or Jane were safe or dead, nobody could ever take away from him the fall of the mill.It was a fact, solid as Father's death. All life was changed."

Robert Westall establishes clearly that Simon's psychological torment has come to an end.The mill seems to symbolise evil.Simon's destruction of this evil makes him find peace with himself and with the world. The pain Simon feels about his father is also released when the mill falls.

With the mill's evil control of him gone, Simon then proceeds to destroy the Scarecrows. It is as though he is destroying his "devils".The following quote illustrates this point

"He knew that with the mill gone, they were finished. With the mill gone, they could never come again.Their home, their heart was gone."

Here the reader sees clearly that Simon believes that destroying the scarecrows is avenging members of his family--Mum, Jane, Joe and indeed, himself.Afterwards, Simon is at peace, and the reader gets the distinct impression that he will now be able to find security and happiness with his new family.

This turning point is very important to the rest of the novel.Simon is a deeply troubled young person. He was extremely disturbed by his father's death. He was very upset by his mother's relationship with Joe Moreton. The destruction of the mill and the scarecrows enables Simon to get rid of his "devils".This seems to be a sign that a difficult, bleak period in Simon's life has ended, and that he will be able to face the future without being plagued by the "devils" caused by his disturbed emotions.

Final Draft-Analysis of Juliet's Soliloquy

Buy cheap fears term paper

Fear is a feeling of agitation and anxiety that often leads to doubt. Fear and doubt both play a crucial part of a good story by building suspense and tension in the plot. Shakespeare is well known for including many scenes with intriguing and suspenseful plots that add a sparkle into the story. In particular, his work, Romeo and Juliet, has a spectacular plot that unfolds many of Juliet's fears, particularly those displayed prior to taking her vial which reveal her chaotic state of mind at that moment. Specifically, she shows fears of risk, deceit and mistrust, and wrongful marriage, and through this progression, leads her to a state of paranoia.

First, while she ponders over the possibilities of the end results of taking her vial, she shows a main fear of risks. Specifically, she fears that by taking this chance, the potion either will not work or she will wake up before Romeo arrives in a haunted room. She states," How if, when I am laid in the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo/Come to redeem me? That's a fearful point." (ll. -, pg. 1) She is thinking about every possible outcome and throughout this progression, she seems more doubtful. She even goes to the point of thinking she will see her dead cousin Tybalt's ghost while she is in the tomb. " O look, methinks I see my cousins ghost." (ll. 56, pg. 1) While this shows her panicked state of mind, it always is a use of foreshadowing by Shakespeare which he reveals very cleverly. Juliet is frightened that she might wake up before Romeo comes and have to lie in a room where she might even die of suffocation. She further states, " Shall I not be stifled in the vault, to whose foul mouth no healthsome air breaths in, and there die strangled.." (ll. 4-5, pg. 1) She begins to imagine the dirty, suffocating conditions she will soon see and all the horrors are drawing closer to her. She is afraid of the risk she is taking because he life is at stake. Juliet fears of death and the huge burden that she now carries about whether to take the potion or not.

In her chaotic state of mind, Juliet also shows fear of deceit because she even begins to ponder the chance that Friar Lawrence, who she knows is a very well intentioned man, poisoned her vial and purposely wants her dead. She states, " What if it be a poison which the Friar subtly hath ministered to have me dead…because he married me before to Romeo?" (ll. 6, pg. 1) During her moment before taking the potion, her mind is in a state of hysteria so she begins to think of unimaginable things. She thinks that Friar Lawrence has poisoned her drink because he is trying to get rid of her and all the troubles she has caused him. By killing her, he would not be seen as the man who supported her marriage with Romeo and who showed betrayal to both feuding families.

Finally, she has fear of marriage to the wrong person, who in this case, is Paris. Since she has already secretly married Romeo, her true love, not only would marrying Paris be against her will, but it would be considered a sin. The whole purpose of taking the potion in the first place was for Juliet to run off with Romeo to Mantua and live there with him until he was no longer banished. However, she fears that if the potion fails to work, she would have to wake up the next morning, and marry Paris just as planned, something she really does not desire. She states," What if this mixture do not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no, this shall forbid it." (ll. -, pg. 11) Her mind is full of confusion and while she thinks of all the horrible possibilities, she then tries to contradict herself but saying she will not allow it to happen. From her soliloquy, it is inferred that she is not in a state of calmness at that moment because she is at the verge of taking a huge risk with a questionable future ahead of her.

However, although Juliet has many fears and emotions that run through her mind showing she is in a state of panic and doubt, she still goes through with her plan, and thus shows she is a very determined person deeply in love with Romeo. She surpasses her fear of risk-taking, deceit by the friar, and marriage to Paris and takes the vial as a gesture of her love for Romeo. Her fears intensify the scene tremendously and Shakespeare cleverly includes it in her soliloquy as a way to lure the audience. Just like any good story or play would have, Romeo and Juliet includes essential ideas that make the story appealing for any audience.

"If we are to continue to inhabit the Earth there will have to be a revolution in the relationship of humans to the Earth and of humans to each other and to other species that share the Earth with us." (Charles Birch). This relationship between species, humans and the Earth begins at a local level. Victoria Park Nature Reserve (V.P.N.R.) is home to countless species of plants and animals making up a diverse ecosystem. Located 8km south of Alstonville on the Far North Coast of NSW is V.P.N.R. It is 17.5 hectares in size and is one of 41 remnants of the 'Big Scrub'. The protection of V.P.N.R. is crucial to maintain its genetic diversity along with its utility, intrinsic and heritage value. This protection also assists in creating an ecosystem rich in diversity, increasing its resilience, making V.P.N.R. accessible to future generations and improving the relationship between humans and the earth.

V.P.N.R has undergone rainforest reforestation to improve its survival rate. The area has to be closely watched and attended to because of its smaller size. Research has shown that remnants have to be at least 15ha in size to survive. V.P.N.R.'s size causes it too dry out quickly while also being easily invaded by weeds and light. This vulnerability of the area causes the species to affected also. Plant and animal species acquire adaptations to survive in an environment. With V.P.N.R. constantly affected by these damages it causes species to die out due to the changing climate, loss of plant species which is used as a food source and other such reasons. This disrupts the food chain and diversity of the ecosystem and causes another species to take the place of one which is no longer evident. If this is not possible, many species will be lost and the genetic diversity of the ecosystem destroyed. This is why the protection of species and the rainforest is so crucial to maintain this genetic diversity evident in V.P.N.R.

Order Custom "Show why Victoria Park Nature Reserve should be protectted" paper

V.P.N.R. is one of the last remnants of sub-tropical rainforest. This fact puts increased emphasis on the importance of protecting the area, to prevent it too being destroyed. Species such as, Flaydia praealta (Ball nut tree), Ochrosia molorei (Southern Ochrosa) and Baloghia marmorata (Jointed Baloghia) are rare and at risk of becoming extinct. The loss of flora or fauna is a major issue. All plants and animals are useful and have a utility value in some aspect for example, being part of the food chain, maintaining the genetic diversity, some plants may be useful to scientists in medical and other such research, relating to human illnesses. Flora and fauna in Australia make a substantial contribution to the national economy through many aspects, one being tourism. If this sub-tropical rainforest is not protected and left to degrade, be exposed to vandalism, human impacts and the loss of its utility value it would lead to the destruction of the environment not just locally and for the present, but for future generations also.

The intrinsic value of any ecosystem or area is vital. Would an ecosystem really hold such significance if no one was able to enjoy it? V.P.N.R. is accessible to both 4WD's (with a parking fee), and people on foot. Picnic and grassed areas for games and recreation have been implied to prevent the natural vegetation been trampled and degraded. Boardwalks also improve the state of the vegetation. The area is also able to be enjoyed by people looking to find peace and tranquility. They can relax and interact with nature while escaping from the urban, materialistic life lived today by many. The protection of V.P.N.R. is crucial if these activities and intrinsic values are to be maintained.

Future generations are always considered in the protecting and managing of the earth, therefore emphasizing the importance of the protection of V.P.N.R. This enables the diversity of the area to strengthen, thus, prolonging the existence of the ecosystem. There is no generally agreed strategy in which to protect an area for future generations though any attempt is valued and will benefit the area and people for many years ahead.

William Blake intricately ties in religious connotations within his poems. This is apparent in, "The Lamb," and the contrast, "The Tyger." Blake foils these poems together to convey Blake's understanding of "God" as a creator, and the binary connection so commonly seen in life. When reading these two poems, the question is often posed "If God created the Lamb, than who created the Tyger?" Whether these two creatures gave rise from the divinity is also questioned. Blake creates a journey of faith as he questions the creator and the nature of his creations. He uses these poems as an avenue to allow the readers to interpret their understanding of God through his written observations formed into his poetry.

"The Lamb," starts out with the lines 14 "Little Lamb, who made thee/Dost though know who made thee/ Gave thee life and bid thee feed./By stream and o'er the mead;" Blake is describing the creator of the lamb as the provider. He describes this creator has kind and giving has he takes care of this lamb, with food and a meadow to live in, near a stream. Blake continues his lines as he describes the beauty that comes from this lamb. Lines 5-7 "Gave thee clothing of delight,/Softest clothing wooly bright;/Gave thee such a tender voice, making all the vales rejoice" These lines show the beauty of this lamb. The delicate image of this untainted lamb with his soft voice innocently grazing the meadow. In lines 11-1 Blake reveals the creator parallel to Christian reference to "Jesus, the Lamb of God."

"Little Lamb I'll tell thee,/Little Lamb I'll tell thee/He is called by thy name,/For he calls himself a Lamb/He is meek and he is mild,/He became a little child/I a child and though a lamb,/ We are called by his name."

Blake's reference to Jesus is most apparent on line 17 "He became a child." Biblically Jesus who is part of the trinity of God, Jesus and the Holy spirit, is sent as a part of God to a child. In this poem as well, the Lamb becomes a child, to show purity and innocence from a child-like heart essentially the same as the innocence of Jesus.

Order custom research paper on Analysis of William Blake's "The Lamb" and "The Tyger"

In comparison to "The Tyger," it is apparent Blake shows the binary image of God, His creations. Lines 1-4 "Tyger, Tyger, burning bright/ In the forest of the night,/ What immortal hand or eye/ Could frame they fearful symmetry?" Blake is questioning the purpose of the nature of the creator of this "Tyger." "What immortal hand or eye/could from they fearful symmetry?" Blake here is asking why is it possible that any God, divinity could create this creature of evil. In lines 8-1 "What hand dare seize the fire?/ And what shoulder and what art/" (Line 8-) Blake builds the impression of God, the Creator as a blacksmith, molding and forming a hideous creature through the "distant deeps [and] skies." (line 5) Blake describes the creation of "The Tyger" as fearful disgusting. Lines 11-14 " And, when they heart began to beat,/ What dread hands? And what dread feet?/"

Blake later goes further with this idea and refers to the poem "The Lamb" has he writes on line 0, "Did He who made the lamb make thee?" Showing his questioning of God, the Creators nature and intentions toward this world, and his creations. Could a God who created the innocent and beautiful Lamb, also create a creature of evil and destruction? These binaries of "good and evil," "innocent and guilty" are placed in the spindle between these two poems. While God is the creator of something so innocent and pure, could he also be the same hand to create a creature destructive and harmful. While the Lamb symbolizes purity, the Tyger symbolizes hatred, and evil. In lines 18-1 from "The Tyger," "Did he smile his work to see?/ Did he who made the lamb make thee?" Could the creator of both the lamb and of this tyger be proud and satisfied with his creation? Blake leaves his readers to ponder these questions, which are left for open interpretation.

When interpreting this poem into the context of society, Blake's two poems lies far deeper than the image of two creatures. It is difficult to understand the how these two creatures, that represent the binaries in life could have manifested from the same creator.

Some people believe that once a cheater, always a cheater. This means that people do not believe in change in others. This is not true; the reason why people do not change is because they do not want to, do not have to, or is not given the opportunity to. In the story "Man Of La Mancha," Aldonza is a woman, who hates all men, but by the end of the story she changes her mind. Even when people seem really bad, there is always good in other people. Stereotypical messages should not be made on a large some of people, because their will always be the one who stands out in the crowd. Some people need to be given more credit for them then they think. There are many good people out there; they just have to be given the chance to be recognized.

Aldonza, at the beginning of the story, does not trust any men. She was a prostitute, therefore had bad experiences with men. They only treated her as an object, and not as a person with feelings. She started to hate all men. This made her feel used and have little self-esteem because she could not trust anyone. When someone has been belittled for a long time, over and over again, it has an effect on a person. This would cause many psychological scares, and change a person on how she feels and thinks. Every event in a person's life changes them, for better or for worse. Even a slight remark said to another person, which might seem nothing to you, has an effect.

When Don Quixote first saw Aldonza, he saw her as a dream-ideal. He saw her for much more than she saw herself. Quixote saw her as a beautiful woman, and someone whom he will want to serve. When Aldonza found out about him, she was confused and angry with this. She would not let him she her for what she really is. Aldonza did not trust men, especially one who thought to be his "Dulcinea." She did not see herself as any good, and surly she did not think that she was anything close to perfect. The more someone is reminded of something, the more they will start to believe it, and soon this will become the truth. To Aldonza, the truth is that she is a no good whore. When all of a sudden, someone tries to but a different perspective on a subject, you might push away and not believe that it is true. When Quixote saw Aldonza as "Dulcinea," she wanted to push this idea away. This shows the power of effect that other people play on you.

Near the end of the story, Aldonza learns to trust Don Quixote. She starts to believe herself as "Dulcinea." To the effect of this, she becomes a better person. She also learns to become a little more trusting in other people. The thing that inspired Aldonza to change the most was the inspiration of Don Quixote's idealism. At first Aldonza did not believe that a man could have respect for her, but as time went by, and through Quixote's inspiration, this changed. This shows the power of love. When people really want to change, they can. They just need the right kind of people to help them, and support them. Change is never easy and when it is time to change you need strength from yourself, and other people surrounding you. A positive state of mind is the key to a positive outcome.

At the beginning of the story, Aldonza hates all men, and looks down on herself. As the story goes by, she changes. She changes her outlook on men and herself. Don Quixote was the main inspiration of this. Aldonza starts to trust men, and feels much better about her. Aldonza is now Dulcinea, a perfect woman, who is now better than she ever was before. Aldonza saw kindness in some men because she let herself trust it. If she did not trust it, she would have been in the some boat as before. Aldonza would have been the same "small" women. People need to be trusted. Without trust, there is nothing. People would be looking at other people in a whole different manner. There are many bad people out there, but there are a whole lot of good people too.

SBC, previously known to many of us in Sacramento as Pac Bell, made a recent announcement noted in an article by Network World Fusion, that they were adding "…managed Wi-Fi services for schools and hospitals to enable those institutions to converge voice and data traffic onto a single wireless network."

SBC, citing data from EduVentures, a U.S. educational consulting firm, said more than 110,000 public schools combined spend nearly $6. billion a year on technology. Of that, about $500 million is spent on wireless technologies, but that is expected to quadruple by next year, SBC says.

I believe the implications of this article are significant. First, even if EduVentures' forecast is less, the amount to be spent still could be between $1-$ billion and that represents just one industry, education. A sustainable trend is usually preceded by a threshold amount, which, I believe is represented by this forecast. Second, for small schools or small school districts, the SBC announcement represents a possible outsourcing that up to this point didn't exist, at least, not for the Sacramento area. Lastly, some of the Wi-Fi standards are just now being ratified and ramped up for faster speeds and better security, both critical to expanding Wi-Fi to schools. It will be interesting to see how SBC packages their pricing since what was not mentioned in the article was any approvals by a state public utilities commission (PUC), such as California's PUC.

In this next section, I plan to talk about some of the terms mentioned since this article is from a technology trade publication. Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity a term coined and copyrighted by the Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry sponsored organization that certifies the interoperability of IEEE 80.11-based wireless equipment. IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and they are the group that created a whole series of wireless specifications based upon the original Ethernet protocol, IEEE 80..The Ethernet protocol is what everyone, and I mean internationally, is using if they want to access or be a part of the Internet. So Wi-Fi technology is about high-frequency wireless local area networking (WLAN) and because its origins are from Ethernet, it also uses the Ethernet protocol.

The series of wireless specifications are 80.11a, 80.11b, 80.11g and more recently 80.11i. The fact is there are even more specifications in the 80.11 alphabet soup but I think these are the more important ones at this point in time. The 80.11b spec was actually the first real marketing success. The 80.11b technology "operates in the .4 GHz range offering data speeds up to 11 megabits per second", mbps. (A quick side note Mbps represents megabytes per second and mbps represents megabits per secondthe difference being a magnitude of 8, significant when used in data transmissions.) Most computer systems today, if they are using wireless technology, are using the 80.11b specification. The 80.11a technology provides up to 54 mbps in the 5 GHz range. The 80.11g technology offers wireless transmission over relatively short distances at up to 54 mbps in the .4 GHz range. Note that the 80.11b spec is compatible with the 80.11g since they both operate in the same high-frequency range. This means, in theory, if you are using an 80.11g access point, a laptop with 80.11b wireless capability can communicate through that access point. I mention in theory because current 80.11g products are ahead of the ratified specification (which should happen this summer). Lastly, the 80.11i specification, which is still a work-in-progress, has to do with improved security.Works Cited

Have you ever heard of that place? That place that everyone is supposed to have for himself. The place where you're supposed to go to get away from everything. The place that may be far away or right upstairs or in your mind or wherever, just a place. I never had a place, not until I turned 16 and got my license. It was then that I rediscovered a place I'd been to so many times before. In a moment I saw it with fresh eyes and a new spirit. My place is the beach. Any beach, it makes no difference, just one that isn't swarming with people.

Previous to my days as an independent visitor, the beach was an endless playground. All day was spent riding the waves on inflated rings and ducks and frogs. Every log, rock, and cave was my personal jungle gym, one that was waiting for me just as I left it upon each return. Some of the beaches had tide pools, which I would explore with a stick and anything but a steady hand. There were anemones and starfish to bug and crabs to seek vengeance on for the terror they struck in me. The continuous search for grand seashells are what kept me going when my energy had run low and the adults were still trudging along at their grueling pace. All the while, through my fun and exasperating days at the beach, I remembered to keep a watchful eye on the ocean and particularly on the offshore breakers, where sneaker waves are born. Sneaker wave is a common term used to describe the crippling gushes of water that commonly bombards the beaches of the world. Sneaker waves proceed out of the breakers as innocent current, waiting until one's guard is let down to pounce on unsuspecting visitors. So often, visitors resting on the dry sand that lured them into a false sense of security find themselves suddenly terrorized by the infamous sneaker wave.

I most often encountered the sneaker wave to the Oregon coast, where my fears of the sneaker wave began. It was on a family visit to Cape Lookout, a peninsula with a long narrow strip of beach and relatively few visitors. I was about five and it was nearing the end of our day at the beach. My father and mother, a couple that were close friends of theirs, and myself, were making our way down the beach headed back to the car. I almost made it home dry and happy when the sneaker wave sought me out. I saw it from the corner of my eye, it started behind me, swiftly and with the slightest murmur it caught up to my bare legs. The sudden chill sent me running to what, to me at the time was a giant boulder. This boulder, a big rock that stood a merefeet or so above the sand and was just wide enough for me to fit both feet on, was apparently going to save me from the evil sneaker wave. I shouted to my fleeing parents, "Look, I'm safe. It can't get me!" Well whatever I thought at the time, I thought wrong. All of a sudden I was down, drenched and crying out for relief from the pinching cold that covered my body.

I can't recall when the beach changed from a playground with a hidden danger into the safe haven that it now is for me. It was somewhat gradual; as I grew older I began to really appreciate the beauty of the ocean, the shoreline, the sea life and entire atmosphere that embraces each visitor that asks only to be embraced as gently. The beaches along the Oregon coast were the first place I sought to go after I got my license. I drove a shorthours or so but was ultimately transported into a different world all together. A serene yet simplistic wonderland awaited me. As with any beach these days, if I'm a lone visitor the long walks I take give me time to reflect every aspects of my life, time to think of family, friends, plans for the future, or nothing at all. I am secluded but not lonely when it's just me at the beach surrounded by everlasting, restless waters and teased by the chilling salty wind that stings my skin but soothes my soul. It's rare for me to venture into the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean this far north, for when I do venture into the bone chilling waters I am burned by the icy waves as they inch father up my body. It's a rush that requires me to be in a certain frame of mind to acquire.

The beaches of the world are all so unique and can offer every person a different experience on each visit. This is what I love about it. It's exactly why it my place to retreat to whenever I get the chance. All beaches are never ending but always offer the same elements of comfort and serenity upon each visit. Whatever beach I visit I find what I wish to there, beauty, freedom, hope, and peaceful moments that I can keep to myself forever. The beach is my place.

Lord Byron was not only just an average poet as people of his time thought he was. Byron was a celebrity, for his stardom was rising every time. He was very sexually active, he attracted many young girls and ladies because of his good looks. He inherited his father's property at a young age. Byron would write about society most of the time, especially about his feelings on sexuality, women, and society in general. But he also talked about nature, for he is one of the best that puts him in the list among the great poets of the Romantic era. Byron not only spend his time writing how he felt, he let the action speak his emotions for itself. One such example is when he volunteered as a soldier to help fight Greece's independence from Turkey. He got caught by an illness and died. But Byron never had an immature image even though he made some wrong choices in life. Byron loved life in his own definitions.

Byron's poetry is about society and nature. But he has a talent of combining both of those elements to create an exquisite work of art. One such example can be seen in "The Prisoner of Chillon." Here he describes images of the prisoner Bonnivard being locked up and Byron gets out the message that being imprisoned for what you believe is wrong. He was totally against that idea. In this poem, it is quite pessimistic and sad. His type of literature is famous that today we have created an element of his literature called the Byronic Hero. Byronic Hero is very idealistic and pessimistic in the hero's state of being. Can be rebellious and religious at the same time. This type of character is Bonnivard. Byronic Hero can be seen in Childe Harold's Prigrimage and Manfred. Byronic Hero is described in poetry when Byron tries to present the downfall or the character's lowest point in his life. Byron tend to write poetry when he is influenced by an event, such as "Darkness." He wrote that poem just to make us think, what would have happened if the sun was gone permanently? The volcanic eruptions made him aware how important life is. He puts that thought on the paper.

Byron tends to write about beauty, sexuality, and the aspects of how he feels about it. Byron appreciates beauty not in the sense of what everyone thinks of true beauty, but how he feels about beauty. This is evident in the poem "The Girl of Cadiz." He describes the beautiful Spanish girl being more appealing and heart-throbbing than the English girls back home. Byron doesn't even seek to find beauty, for he sees it at first sight in "She walks in beauty." He describes his cousin, whom he sees for the very first time. These type of poems are high-spirited and joyous. Byron tries to portray how he felt that time when he wrote these poetry. The tones are usually joyous and high-spirited. But not always all the time are his poetry joyous. One such example is "So we'll go no more a-roving." This poetry talks about growing old and dying. He tries to show in a pessimistic view that when two lovers grow old together, they get sick of each other and their passion dies out (this is evident in stanza ). This poem brings out no hope. Byron must have wrote this because of his unhappy marriage. And like the title says, he lost his passion for the one he loved that he doesn't want to be sexually active.

Byron uses alliteration, assonance, and other elements in poetry in a serious manner. He not only wants to present his ideas and emotions but show the technical side of his poetry. His poetry comes in various lengths and styles. He write song-like lyrics, narrative poetry, political protest type poems, funny epistles, humorous epics, and so on. Rhyme scheme can be couplets, aabba form, abababcc forms, petrarchan sonnets, and it goes on. One type of uniqueness in his technicality in his poetry is his assonance. He may use assonance in rhyme words at the end of each line, and sometimes alliteration. He uses metaphors and similies to compare something organic like his cousin to something inorganic like the night. He makes such effect in doing this.

Byron nevertheless is a genius. Later on in his life he grows mature on his moral issues and fights over his wrong choices in life. His knowledge of God grows, he has a basic foundation of the nature of God. This can be evident in "The destruction of Sennacharib." He never let anyone come down on his beliefs. He always admit his guilt and mistakes in his poetry, for him poetry is a time of letting out his emotions into powerful creative words. We can sometimes relate to him, for we make mistakes too.

Teen UnemploymentA Growing Crisis

With fewer than 40 percent of teens in the labor force in cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit and closer to 0 percent in New York (Wall Street Journal [WSJ], 11), we should be alarmed. Why are such small numbers of urban teens working or seeking work?Perhaps, these city kids do want to work, but the resources just aren't there. With more teens falling out of the labor force and into the "hidden unemployed", the economies of our large cities are going to take a hit; causing the national economy to suffer as well.

In the case of Alex Perez (WSJ), as with many other urban youth, he is not being counted as part of the labor force or as unemployed.Alex is a prime example of the discouraged worker or "hidden unemployed", who is an individual that falls out of the labor force because he or she is convinced of not finding a suitable job (Miller, 001, pg. 148).Even though Alex would like to have a job and is technically unemployed, he is not counted statistically because he is not searching for work in the "proper" manner. Thus, the number of teens in the labor force is lower than it should be and the unemployment rate does not appear to be nearly as high as it actually is.

Without positive role models the urban teens often suffer from a lack of job finding skills as well as poor work ethics.Especially since it is hard to find a job in their own neighborhoods, this type of teenager is more likely to get discouraged and simply stop looking for work, which is precisely the reason that the percentage of teens in our big city labor force is so low.It is not that they don't want to work; it's that they are frightened by the world outside of how they know it.Another factor to consider is that the predominant industries in major cities tend to create fewer part time jobs hence there is less opportunity for student employment (WSJ, 11).And, with higher minimum wage rates, employers are less likely to hirer under skilled teenagers in favor of older more experienced employees (Project 1, 15).For the often frighten, unknowing teens, these circumstances make for a difficult, seemingly impossible leap into the job market (WSJ, 11).

Buy cheap Teen Unemployment:A Growing Crisis term paper

The trend of decreasing teens in the labor force may give the effect of a shrinking national unemployment rate as it is reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but it is in error due to the increasingly high numbers of discouraged workers, especially amongst urban teens. If nothing is done to resolve this unemployment problem it will eventually result in a reduction of national economic development, with a more direct effect on major cities due to the fact that teenage unemployment lends itself to a more viscous cycle.Teens that are unemployed grow up to be adults who are unemployed, leading to an underdeveloped community which is more susceptible to illegal activities.Without proper opportunities of work these urban teenagers will be less likely to have an honest job or to make viable contributions to the economy. This means that our country's economic development will slowly depreciate and give way to less economic growth in the future.

We have all heard it before, the children are our future.Unfortunately, the future doesn't look very bright for many big city teens. With so many of them falling out of the labor force, we are bound to see problems.Discouraged and disheartened by the lack of work and the bleakness of an opportunity for self improvement, these unemployed teens turn to the street for answers. The answer is continued poverty enhanced by a life of crime and drugs. And so the cycle continues.More urban kids grow up poor with less positive influences to lead the way and in the end the economy suffers. The entire nation will suffer unless something is done to reverse this trend.

Personal essays are writings that are an intimate experience between the writer and the reader. The experiences shared are of many different emotions, happiness, pain, reflection, misspent time, or any other number of ideas. The reader is brought into the writer's feelings.

Two writers who are adept at bringing the reader into their emotions of past experience are Alice Walker and N. Scott Momaday. Both writers use the power of past experience to build emotions felt in the readers today.Walker is reflective of how she felt growing up after a tragic accident that took the sight of one of her eyes. Momaday is reflective of the past of his ancestors and how their traditional lives were stripped away by others. Both writers write of a tragedy of losing some part of their identity by the actions of another person.

In Momaday's essay The Way to Rainy Mountain, the reflection of a grandmother's experience as a Kiowa Indian when the U.S. Calvary took over her people's land. The U.S. Calvary was not seen as a positive influence. Those Indians who did not fight, but surrendered were not treated so compassionately. They were imprisoned and as Momaday states, "My grandmother was spared the humiliation of those high gray walls by eight or ten years, but she must have known from birth the affliction of defeat…"This is a very sad statement, one without hope.Walker is like Momaday's grandmother in that a tragic incident in which she loses the sight of an eye, fills her with a shame much like that of the Indians when Walker writes, "For six years I do not stare at anyone, because I do not raise my head."At this early point in both essays the reader is made to feel sad and wonder how these events could happen in the way that they do.

Ideas of explanations that help people to deal with something that they do not understand are an age old practice. The Devil's Tower in Momaday's essay is one example of such practice. There is a hill in seemingly a flat area. This hill stands out and the Indians developed a myth to explain the hill and the disappearance of some children. The stars that form the constellations are the sisters that disappeared, "From that moment, and so long at the legend lives, the Kiowas have kinsmen in the night sky."Walker does not have the disappearance of some people to explain, but she does try to come to terms with the disappearance of her sight in one eye.It is the lie that her brother tells about how the injury occurred that bothers her most. She feels abandoned by the truth.Walker writes, "If I do not say this is what happened, I know that my brothers will find ways to make me wish I had."The pain of the loss of the children to the Kiowas is explained by seeking comfort within the night sky, the pain of the loss of sight is expressed by Walker in the lie of her brothers.

Buy cheap Personal Essays term paper

The memory of experience is powerful. For Momaday the experience is his time at his grandmother's house. It is very pleasant to him.He reflects when he writes, "Once there was a lot of sound in my grandmother's house, a lot of coming and going, feasting and talking."The reader is left with the impression that these are happy times for Momaday, a pleasant memory he can visit at any time.Walker contrasts Momaday's memories by displaying memories that are painful to reflect upon. She is displaced from her home where she was comfortable."All I know is that my mother might die, my father is not so jolly, my brothers still have their guns, and I am the one sent away from home."Walker does not look at going to her grandparent's house as a totally positive experience like Momaday writes about going to his grandmother's house.

The end result of the essays is similar.Sometimes it seems that we have a long journey in life before we feel that our experience has been positive in how we live.Momaday comes to peaceful terms with his reflections when he writes, "Looking back one, I saw the mountain and came away."His grandmother is buried where the Kiowa had sacred ground, back to her beginnings, back to his.Momaday feels pride and love.Walker's young daughter is what brings her back to her beginnings, restores her pride, by telling Walker that she had a world in her eye. After considering the child's observations, Walker sees life in a new way."The other dancer has obviously come through all right, as I have done. She is beautiful, whole and free. And she is also me."A connection with emotion is made, a destination is reached. Both writers are in a positive aspect of reflection, one that takes us back to the beginning, the happiness of just being alive.

John Steinbeck used various themes in writing the novel Of Mice and Men.However, one theme that played a huge role in the novel was loneliness.Loneliness was a theme, which was experienced by many characters throughout the entire novel. These characters included Curley's wife, Candy and Crooks.Friendship also was a big theme between the characters, especially between George and Lennie. This friendship and various other friendships are demonstrated throughout the characters in the novel.

George and Lennie shared a very special friendship. They journeyed life together as a pair, feeding each other with support and growing together in love.As the two men worked on the ranch, they were constantly working extremely hard. However, this was not how they wanted to live. They had a dream that one day they would "have a littler house and a couple acres" (pg 18) where they would "be able to live of the fatta land." (Pg 18).George and Lennie wanted nothing more than to just live a simple life were they didn't have to work, but instead just relax.

Whilst reading Of Mice and Men, a character who appeared to be lonely was Candy.Candy was an old swamper who worked on the ranch with George and Lennie.Candy appeared to be an old, lonely man with his only companion being his dog.Candy showed great compassion towards his dog and treated it like it was family. This shows loneliness due to the fact that Candy loved his dog so dearly because he had no other relatives or family members. This was proven in the novel when Candy decided to join his money with George and Lennie and purchase a house with them.He told them that he would leave them all his money and his possessions once he had died, because he didn't have any family to leave it to."I'd [he'd] make a will an' leave my [his] share to you [the] guys… I [he] ain't got no money" (Pg 56).Candy is very lonely, as he had nobody who he could leave his possessions to; he has no family or friends apart from his dog.

As the novel progresses, we meet Curley's wife.Curley's wife was also another character in the novel that demonstrated loneliness.Curley's wife didn't have anybody who she could talk to or confide in, as her husband Curley, didn't show any love or affection towards her. This is why Curley's wife sought attention from other men, in order to feel worthy and loved. This became evident in the novel when she comforted Lennie one day when she was alone in the barn. She tried to seduce Lennie with her looks and she also expressed her feelings of loneliness to him.She said, "I get so lonely… how'd you like not to talk to anybody?"(Pg 78).This suggested that Curley does not provide his wife with any company or love and this is the reason whey she is lonely and always looking to other men for companionship.

Then we came across Crooks.Crooks worked on the ranch as a stable buck.He was forever spoken to poorly and treated disrespectfully all because of the fact that he was a "nigger."The way he was treated showed that Crooks was also a very lonely character. While all of the other men shared rooms, Crooks was given a room of his own and he was to stay in his room and not communicate to the rest of the workers on the ranch.Crooks was not allowed to participate in any events that the other "white" men participated in or even enter the "white" men's bedroom. Therefore he had nobody to talk to which made him feel extremely lonely. This became evident in the novel when Lennie went into Crooks' bedroom and he was telling Lennie how lonely and sad he was.He said, "Books ain't no good.A guy needs somebodyto be near him." (Pg 66).Thus Crooks felt lonely and he would love to have a friend to keep him company. However, this was not possible for Crooks as he was a "nigger" and nobody accepted him for he was.

Overall, I believe that nobody should feel lonely. However this can be unpreventable, especially if it is hard to find acceptance from other people. For example, Crooks and Lennie were not accepted into society.Crooks was not accepted because he was a "nigger" and nobody wanted anything to do with him and Lennie was also not accepted because he had a mental disability.Loneliness is something that makes you feel sad and very miserable.Maybe if Curley's wife, Crooks and Candy had someone to love and care about them, then maybe they would be accepted into society and eventually find friendship in someone.

Media has always been, and still is, one of the most influential and powerful channels of communication, source of information, and/or entertainment. In the essay "Jets of Water Blast Civil Rights Demonstrators, Birmingham, 16", Rev. Jesse Jackson claims that the power of the media is such that it can manipulate the public's thoughts and emotions by showing them what hey want to see and hear, thus shaping reality as they saw fit, hence the concept of forced reality is played. Rev. Jackson supports this claim with a photograph and hard facts of the event portrayed in it. Jackson uses his memories and historical facts of the hosing of African-American civil rights demonstrators to show how the white oppressors tried to suppress the activists. Jackson states that since the media was controlled by the white majority, the public was shown things through that white perspective.

Rev. Jackson starts his essay by drawing attention to the photograph and then discussing the event that is depicted in it. The photograph showed a group of Black peaceful demonstrators being hosed with water by the white authorities. The picture doesn't show the white people committing this act, but the black people being humiliated and de-humanized. This was one of the ways through which the whites oppressed the blacks. As Jackson stated, "…words speak pictures", this is true vice versa as well. Words and pictures can have the same effect on the viewer. Passionate words evoke emotions and spark the imagination as effectively as pictures. This is the power of the media.

The first section of the essay is mostly opinions stating what he thinks people were feeling and thinking when they saw the picture. Jackson claims that the picture "exposed the most despicable in us, and it brought the best out of us, because no one seeing this picture could be neutral". This is, for the most part, true. The picture does indeed stir emotion, whether it is outrage or glee, but some people choose to not care at all. Jackson further describes the photo as a way in which empowered the black citizens in their fight for total equality. The second section (nd page, paragraphs 1-4) is filled with facts. These facts are his personal experiences, from meeting with Martin Luther King Jr. to leading demonstrations to starting the first Black Presidential campaign. These are evidences that prove his claims and also prove his credibility as a writer. In the third section, Jackson delves more into his main point. He discusses the power of words and pictures and the way it affects the way we think, which then it affects our perception of the world and its cultures and societies. This is what one would call forced reality. From referring to the Bible to videotape of the beating of Rodney King, Jackson uses these facts to support his claims of how language and visual effects can impose reality, and show how the media is always there, ever watching and recording pivotal (and/or private) moments in history.

The media can choose to delete, distort, emphasize, and de-emphasize facts. Pictures reveal the stark naked truth, but the media can distort it to suit their purposes. Jackson uses a personal example, something that happened to him. Jackson writes of marching to a white-only served restaurant. There, in front of the media (camera and reporters), Jackson demands to eat in the restaurant. He uses this example, this moment, to prove his claim that the media shows the truth and how it can strip away all pretences. Jackson also uses an example of how the media portrays the minorities (i.e. Hispanics and Blacks) in a negative light. Jackson states that the media projects all the negativity, such as violence and crime, as something only blacks and other minorities do, "onto the minds of our neighbors and peers".

Cheap University Papers on Media and its Role in Society

Reality is shaped by the mind, by our thoughts and emotions, and our thoughts and emotions can be manipulated by the media through television and other medium devices. This is what Jackson tries to emphasize. Jackson uses his personal experiences, historical facts and evidences to prove this claim. Reality is a work of art which can be sculpted by mind of individuals. What we see may not ultimately be what is real. Every person interprets what hey see differently. So the truth to one can be false to another. The media can twist truths into lies and vice versa. Media is a most powerful independent tool which shapes the way people perceive reality.

John Lennon

140-180

John Lennon was born on th October, 140, during a violent air raid over Liverpool in the Second World War.He was raised by an aunt after his father was reported missing at sea, and his mother was unwilling to care for him after she remarried.

John became fascinated with rock and roll at an early age, and was part of a high-school band called The Quarry men.During an early gig he was introduced to Paul McCartney who introduced him in turn to George Harrison.Together they became The Beatles.Later on Ringo Star joined the group.

Together with Paul, John wrote the most enduring music of the 0th century.Early on in their friendship, they made a pact that music written by either of them would bear the stamp "Lennon McCartney."The rule held, even during the Beatles eventual break-up.

The Beatles enjoyed amazing success in Britain, beginning in 16 and in America from 164.

John became a father for the first time during those early years in Britain. He and his wife, Cynthia had a son, John Charles Julian Lennon in 16.Julian also went into the music industry as a young adult.

John was one of the most outspoken characters in the music industry during the 160's.He complained loudly of the conditions that the poor and sick had to live in while the Beatles were filming "Help!" in the Bahamas. In 166 he stated that the Beatles were more popular that Jesus. This statement caused an outcry in America, Britain and South Africa in particular.

In 166 John met Yoko Ono in London after a preview of the Japanese woman's -day art exhibition.Their relationship became intense and John drew Yoko into the Beatles' music. There was an unwritten rule that each member's personal relationships were kept apart from the band's recordings.John and Yoko broke this rule during the recording of The White Album and tensions arose.

After manager Brian Epstein's death, the group found themselves having to take control of the business side of things. They all found this hard to deal with and damaging mistakes were made.

Lennon reacted by withdrawing further from the Beatles and focussing on his relationship with Yoko. Together they wrote an album in Johns private studio. Together they were called ''Plastic Ono Band''.They released three singles 'Give Peace A Chance' Cold Turkey' and 'Instant Karma'. The relationship had become public and John's divorce was underway. In November 168 Yoko had a miscarriage. They had also been arrested for possession of drugs, marijuana and LSD.

In 170 the group experienced more trouble a split in the spring that year. Later John said he had no regrets for this decision.

Johns next album 'Imagine' was much more successful commercially. And title song became his most popular solo song.

Some officials of the Nixon administration began a campaign to have John deported as a convicted drug user. TheF.B.I followed him, taped his phone calls and filled thousands of pages of files with notes of his musical and other activities. The case was finally settled in 175 when a court declared that John's British marijuana conviction was not grounds for deportation in the American law.

In 17John and Yoko separated, she stayed in New York and he went to Los Angeles. On what he later described as a "lost weekend" that lasted 18 months.Drinking heavily John was thrown out of nightclubs and was a popular subject for gossip columns for much of that time.He also released three albums, the fist two "Mind Games" and "Walls and Bridges"; turned away from politics back towards the musical theme of "Imagine".While neither album was particularly popular, "Walls and Bridges" did bring John his first American No1 single "Whatever gets you through the night."

In 180 he and Yoko wrote 5 songs in a few weeks. The album "Double Fantasy" received mixed reviews; nevertheless, the single "Starting Over" went quickly to No1, and John and Yoko continued to spend many hours in the studio working on their next collection.

Upon returning home from a recording session on December 8th, 180, John was shot five times by a self-described fan, Mark Chapman, for whom he had signed an autograph earlier that day.He was dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital.Crowds gathered outside his home as soon as the news broke, and many people continued their vigil for days, singing "Give Peace a Chance"; "Imagine", and other of his songs.

Throughout his life, John's strong sense of justice and his striving for world peace continues to offer a call to action for millions of people throughout the world.

According to Thomas Gold Taiwan offers a text book case of an

elite-led revolution leading to social transformation. The stability

of hard authoritarianism of the Taiwanese government laid the

Custom writing service can write essays on Taiwanese Development Models

groundwork for Taiwanese development. The KMTs cohesiveness and

political domination plus the economic development aid supplied by the

United States also helped to provide good conditions for Taiwanese

growth in the beginning. Once the KMT gained control of Taiwan they

redistributed the land and launched a program of rehabilitation and

industrialization. This period was responsible for the nationalization

of many businesses formerly owned by the Japanese and the start of

industrial production in Taiwan marked by a shift away from

agriculture to industry. During the early period of industrialization

Taiwan tried to create domestic markets for its goods. During

the period from 160 to 17 Taiwan pursued export expansion in the

area of industrial goods. During this period U.S. aid directed at

Taiwan declined as did the islands geopolitical significance. To make

up for this decline Taiwan focused on increasing its exports. The

growth of the Taiwanese economy during this period according to Gold

laid the ground work for the growth of opposition movements and

loosening of the KMTS grip on power. According to Gold this was

because the changes in the Taiwanese economy brought about a middle

class, a better educated populace, and a dispersion of industry

through out the country. The Period from 17 to 184 Gold calls the

time of industrial upgrading and the emergence of a political

opposition. During this period Taiwan faced the oil shock, and

increase in export prices due to a labor shortage that doubled workers

salaries, a further loss of geopolitical prestige, and the growth of

dissent and political opposition. Taiwan industrially during this time

improved the quality and quantity of its exports.

The Taiwan industrial model was that of a elite run

bureaucracy that tightly controlled its nations citizenry in

authoritarian ways. This authoritarian government was able to

effectively channel the energies of Taiwan toward modernization. This

authoritarian government became a victim of its own success because as

living and education standards rose the citizenry demanded a shift

away from hard authoritarianism.

Taiwan is not a very good industrialization model for other

countries to use outside of East Asia. This is because many of the

factors that allowed Taiwanese industrialization were unique to

Taiwan. First, Taiwan was colonized before 150 by a developmentalist

power, Japan to which is had close ties even after 150. Second,

Taiwan was the recipient of financial aid during its critical early

years because of a inter-core competition for hegemony between China

and the United States. Third, Taiwan benefited by having a implacable

foe with a very different vision of development. Fourth, Taiwan was

given breathing space following 14, this enabled Taiwan to revive

production and consolidate power without foreign powers interfering.

All these factor make Taiwan unique from other nations that would try

to copy it. One of the elements that nations should not copy from the

Taiwan Model according to Gold is Taiwans harsh authoritarian

government which was much too strictly authoritarian and had a hard

time changing as the attitudes of the Taiwanese people changed.

(Golds book was published years before the 16 democratic elections

in Taiwan) But Gold does say that Taiwans development model does have

some lessons that could be copied in other nations seeking to

industrialize. These are a official commitment to development, land

redistribution, fostering of agriculture, creation of

extra-ministerial ministries to guide development, strategic credit

allocation, collection and efficient management of data concerning the

economy, investment in infrastructure and human capital, and proper

allocation of foreign assistance. Taiwans development model was a

combination of an orwellian state and effective ways of

industrializing. Taken as a whole the repressiveness of the Taiwanese

model makes it undesirable for government to adopt; but other aspects

of Taiwans industrial policy could prove effective for countries

outside of the pacific rim.

Aristotle disbelieved the ancient Greek theory of atoms being of different sizes, regular geometric shapes and being in constant motion. He didnt think atoms could be in constant motion in a void. He developed the theory that all matter consisted of four elements Earth, Air, Water and Fire. There were also four qualities dryness, hotness, coldness, and moistness. Fire was dry and hot, water was moist and cold, Earth was cold and dry, and Air was moist and hot. Each of these elements move naturally in a line to their proper place, where it will be at rest. Aristotles theory also had two forces conflict and harmony. Conflict was thought to cause bad things, and harmony good things. Aristotle also believed that the heavens were made of a fifth, superior element named aither. Aristotles theory was used for almost 000 years, until after the scientific revolution, when other theories prevailed.
