He was unable to think for himself, as it shows in linesand 4 "he held the proper opinion for that time of year; When there was peace, he was for peace when there was war, he went". This man was a follower, a sheep, " his reactions to advertisements were normal in every way" (line 15). By describing such a man Auden is trying to make you think that although that is how the government wants you to be, living solely with the purpose in life to earn money and not have any real opinions, living a life like this is not really living life at all, it is just being.
