There is always a time in a girl's life when she must go shopping for some cute outfits to wear. I remember when my friends would ask me to go shopping with them; I would always make up some bogus reason why I could not go. Shopping just was not fun for me. All my friends were able to shop at the stores I wished I could have shopped at, like Wet Seal, Pacific Sunwear, Hot Cats and Forever 1. And I since I was bigger, those stores did not meet my needs, well, they had the clothes I wanted but not the sizes. I instead had to shop at the Gap, Lyane Bryant and anywhere else that had plus size clothes. Generally stores outside of the mall. If I went with my friends to shop, it was like I really did not shop with them. They went one place and I went to the other. If I stayed and shopped with them, I just got mad and frustrated because here we are the same age and yet I could not even wear the same clothes.


Besides getting frustrated I had to deal with the stuck-up, skinny, you are fat and I am not, sales attendants. This one time I went to Wet Seal, just to see what they had. As I was browsing this worker came up to me and asked, "do you need help finding anything?" As always I replied and said "no." I am not sure if I offended her in some way but the next words out of her snake like lips hurt me so bad. "You know what, I am positive that we do not have anything in your size, why don't you try Layne Bryant." Those words still are stuck to me. I was so upset. No one had ever said anything that rude to me and I believe her words caused me to not like shopping. Did everyone think those thoughts when they saw me enter into their store? I was so furious that I reported her to the manager and thanks to me she no longer works there.


Besides shopping, I never allowed myself to go do the fun things that I thought normal teenagers do. Whenever my friends would ask me to go to the lake, I would not go if I knew there was going to be a bunch of people. I always knew every one who would be there, but I did not feel comfortable being in a bathing suit around them. Here I am with my thunderous thighs and pregnant size belly, squeezed into a one-piece bathing suit, while all the other girls look cute in their bikinis. I always felt that I would be the butt of all jokes. And I did not want to put myself through that. Though my friends would not have said anything rude, I knew what they had to be thinking, because I was thinking the exact same thoughts.


Last year was my first year at college. Going out to Kicks or the Metropolis was the in thing. All my friends wanted to go out to these clubs every weekend and I did not. I would get ready thinking that I look good, but as soon as I met them outside to go I was shot down. They looked even better. Their skinny bodies in tight pants and revealing shirts, ahh! They just looked so good! Why put myself through that? We would get to the clubs and everyone would have someone to dance with except me. I would end up dancing by myself, praying that we would leave soon. Clubs became the epitome of lowering my self-esteem and so I did not go out.


Over the past week I have been observing some overweight girls on campus, and I noticed they are just like how I was. They love to have a good time, they are funny and it seems like many people like them, but they are not allowing themselves to really have fun. They told me how they feel uncomfortable around groups of people they do not know, and how they feel people are staring at them, in a bad way. I told them how I was the same way and when I lost weight those feelings gradually went away without me even noticing. I explained to them that when a person loses weight, they are gaining self-confidence and that is what helps get over those unnecessary feelings. One of the girls I was observing was a good friend of mine, Jennifer Murray. She told the other girls and myself, "When I lost weight I noticed that I had an easier time speaking in front of people, meeting new people, I felt energized, I felt like I fit in more and the comments I got from people I think helped with everything" (Murray). First of all it is not about being thin, but getting to the weight where a person feels most comfortable. I am saying that when a person who feels this way loses weight, there is this sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that appears. It is then when a person allows herself to have a good time and enjoy it. The person knows how hard they have worked to obtain their goal weight and they want people to know and they will show it by having the time of their lives.


FROM THIS MOMENT ON


The physical, mental and emotional aspects of losing weight really do improve the quality of life because losing weight is all about how you, the person feels. When I first lost twenty pounds, I knew I had lost that much but it did not seem like it. I looked the same, I thought, though my mom told me otherwise. I thought it was a waste, that is until I tried on my favorite pair of Gap jeans size 14. After I put them on I, I was so excited I ran to my mom and showed her. They were big and baggy in the butt and thighs and the best part, I could take them off without unzipping them. Then my shirts became looser in the arms, my gramma arms (when you wave, your upper arms waves with you) were disappearing gradually and the shirts were loose around my belly. Those physical aspects helped further my weight loss because rather than someone saying I lost weight, I could visually see it, in the sagginess of my clothes.


Now do not get me wrong, the comments and compliments from other people do help. The compliments help because they re-enforce all the hard work a person has done to lose the weight. People like knowing that their hard work has paid off in the end and the comments assist in continuing the hard work.


Lastly the emotional aspect. Being overweight and a teen is painful. Your peers are very judgmental and rude and do not care if they say something hurtful, because it just helped them climb the popularity ladder. Now when rude, judgmental peers say "hey Kim, two of my thighs equals one of yours" or "Hey be quiet, here is a snickers" those comments do not bother me as much anymore because I know what I have done and am doing to make myself feel great. Bigger people generally let those comments eat away at them inside, but once they begin losing weight it goes in one ear and the other. No more staying up late crying because of what that boy said, instead the person is out having a fantastic time, enjoying everything because weight is no longer an issue and it is one less thing on their mind.
