On Tuesday October , I had an appointment to meet with the Executive Director of the Hillel, Amy J. Jackson.It was a rainy and chilly afternoon as I walked up to the corner of Elm and Boyd.There in front of me was the Hillel, the Jewish student organization here at OU.From friends I had in my childhood that were Jewish, I had some what knowledge of what several Jewish practices were.But I still was curious to learn more about the Jewish culture.As I opened the front door I noticed a welcoming environment, there were pictures up on the wall, posters for events, calendars, announcements, and other agenda.I immediately knew this place was a used and active facility.As I looked around I heard a warm soothing voice of a lady ask me, "Do need some help finding something?"I replied, "Yes, I'm looking for Amy Jackson, I have an appointment with her this afternoon."She enthusiastically stated, "Well looks like you're in luck, that's me!You can follow me, my office is over here."So I followed her into the office and took a seat in a chair in front of the desk.Amy asked, "So how's your day been?"I answered, "It's been good, yourself?"

"Only % of people in America are Jewish, and there aren't that many Jewish people in Oklahoma so, unfortunately we are the only Hillel here in Oklahoma."
Amy Jackson then proceeded to show me around the building.The building had warm color tones that showed me that it is a welcoming place. There was a worship area, and on the far wall was a big cabinet that held the torah. The dining area / gathering room seemed to be a great place to assemble after worship or for a meeting.Also, if services became large, the dining area could be used for extra room for worship.Down the hall there was a computer lab that also held a small Jewish library that is open to anyone that needs it.At the end of the hall was a very nice entertainment room with a ping-pong table, looked as if people could come over and just chill out and have a good time.To the other side there is a kosher kitchen.Overall the facility looked as if it has been kept up and was improving, and was productive in carrying out what they wanted to accomplish for the Jewish community at OU.
The diversity at OU is important; people need to learn about other people's background, just because it helps one understand another better.Meet and get to know everyone you meet.You come to find that everyone is culturally different somehow. I believe the Hillel is an excellent place for the Jewish people of OU to participate at.It allows them to embrace their culture and be comfortable at college hanging around students like them selves.
