A True Shrew?

Katherine's final speech in The Taming of the Shrew leaves the audience

questioning the motives behind such a dramatic change of heart. In the final speech we see Katherine put her shrewish ways in the past and take on a new role of an obedient and honoring wife, or so it seems. What was the motive for her speech? The question remains at the end whether Katherine actually had a change of heart, whether she was actually a shrew to begin with or just hiding behind the persona, or if this final speech is just another bit of sarcasm from the shrew we met in the beginning of the play.My belief is that Katherine did become the obedient and caring wife and that the shrew she was, was the character she was hiding behind.I also believe that she was addressing her sister, father, and all those around to prove that deep down she wasnt the mean, hateful, disobedient person they all labeled her to be.She proved to the people that believed in her the least that someone can change, all it takes is someone to believe in you. Many of us find ourselves conforming to a role given to us by our parents, friends, and society. We become what people say we are.If someone tells you you're worthless or you're a failure, after awhile you begin to believe it.Society tells us we're not rich enough, smart enough, skinny enough, or whatever it may be and categorizes us under such labels.Although none of that may be true, after awhile, if you begin to believe what you're told it becomes a part of who you are.Katherine is very much the product of what society judged her as.She is a shrew because that's what her family and society say she is.If people believe you to be nothing more than a shrew then you may as well act like one.In Act I, scene I Gremio is speaking of Katherine and a future suitor and he says, "I say, a devil.Think'st though, Hortensio, though her father be very rich, any man is so very a fool to be married to hell?"In the next scene we also see Hortensio speaking to Petruchio about Katherine saying, "…I can Petruchio, help thee to a wife with wealth enough, and young and beauteous, brought up as best becomes a gentlewoman. Her only fault, and that is faults enough, is that she is intolerable curst and shrowd and froward, so beyond all measure, that were my state far worser than it is, I would not wed her for a mine of gold.No one was willing to see past the exterior of Katherine, she became what others saw of her and nothing more.Even her own father says of her, But for my daughter Katherine, this I know, she is not for your turn, the more my grief.Deep down though, there was more to Katherine than a shrew and it was Petruchio who would see beyond the label to get to the real person Katherine truly was.

Regardless of Petruchios motivations, he refused to accept Katherine as a shrew. He would not label her as everyone else had and instead played off of Katherine in a completely opposite way.It was easy for Katherine to play the shrew because thats the role she knew best, the role people saw her in.She assumed Petruchio would be just like everyone else, someone easily intimidated by her disobedient, rowdy, intolerable demeanor.Petruchio however wasnt intimidated. For the first time in probably her whole life, Katherine was anything but a shrew to someone. He questions societys label on her saying, Why does the world report that Kate doth limp?Petruchio also defends Katherine to the very people who call her a shrew in Act II, Scene I lines 0-17.He states the very opposite of what they believe her to be, although while it is a false statement, he still does not want them believing she is anything but a kind and quiet woman. This stance that Petruchio takes begins to really move Katherine. As Katherine begins to believe someone may actually love her you see her attitude begin to change. In one scene she is actually afraid that her true self really is a shrew and that Petruchio knows this and doesnt care for her at all.In Act III, scene IIKatherine says, Yet never means to wed where he hath wood. Now must the world point at poor Katherine, and say, Lo, there is mad Petruchios wife, if it would please him come and marry her! and she begins to weep. That is not the weeping of a shrew but the weeping of a woman who is too scared to love, to scared to be anything else than a shrew.

A perfect example of a person conforming to societies judgment is in the musical Les Miserables. The main character Jean Valjean is an honorable man, a loving man, who stole a loaf of bread because he was hungry. That one loaf of bread cost him many years in a terrible prison.Once he was released he was branded a convict.Everywhere he went people knew who he was.Nobody would take him, give him food, shelter, clothing. He couldnt find a job and was left to live on the streets. One night he decided to knock on the door of a priest, who took him in, gave him food, and a place to stay.Upon first arriving, Jean Valjean is shocked and says, Dont you know who I am, Im an ex-convict and the priest says, I know of no such person.Jean Valjean is not the convict he is labeled as, he never was. But, the label became too much. There was nothing he could do to escape the life of an ex-convict.The priest took him in and ignored the judgment rendered upon him.Jean Valjean couldnt believe it, he was convinced that everyone assumed he was just a criminal and began to live the life of a criminal by stealing from the very man who took him in.When the police brought him back to the priest, he told them that he had given Jean Valjean those items and that this man was not the criminal they accused him to be.The priest saw beneath the label just as Petruchio saw beneath Katherines shrewish exterior.Jean Valjeans life was never the same and societies criminal became societies honorable, caring, and gracious political leader.Katherines life was never the same.Societies shrew became Petruchios obedient and loving wife.
